I'm trying my best to keep is simple. Was trying to avoid a wireless link from the entrance gate to a house several lots down the road. Trees could be a problem with line of site. M Miller suggested VideoIQ with built-in hard drive. That makes more sense than outdoor enclosure. I will post the possible options and then we can pick them apart. Again, just trying to keep it simple. Don't want to overspend, but budget is a secondary consideration. Best, Christopher

From the Urban Dictionary for Photographers: Car Analogy - The phrase, "a camera is like a car," is another way of saying, "I have absolutely no idea how a camera works." A common variation is, "camera A is like a Volkswagen and Camera B is like a Ferrari," which should be interpreted to mean, "I make Ferrari noises with my lips when I drive my Volkswagen." Actually, it's nothing like that. Best, Christopher

Have you found Mobile DVR to start a new trend CCTV Market?
cglaeser replied to Numb-nuts's topic in Digital Video Recorders
I met someone at the Exacq training class who designed high data rate wireless transfer for bus transit systems. When the buses return to the terminal, all the video would transfer from the hard drive on the bus to a server at the terminal. He discussed the failure rate of the hard drives in mobile applications. I don't recall the exact mean time to failure, but it was horrible. They purchase hard drives in bulk and replace them frequently. That said, SSD with continuous writes is not without problems too. Best, Christopher -
I was hoping to use an Exacq NVR. Is there an NVR enclosure that is designed to work outdoors. It won't be in the "direct" elements because there is a roof, but it could get wet in a hard driving rain. The enclosure needs to hold the NVR, router, and 4 port PoE switch. Best, Christopher

I upgraded to 4.6. The problem persists. Can anyone else duplicate this problem? Best, Christopher -
Exacq timeline error

The top half of the image below is the before screen capture and the bottom half is the after screen capture. To recreate this problem, all I did was go to the Search Page and scroll to a time on the timeline. Then, click Live Page and then Search Page again. The times on the timeline has shifted by one hour as shown in the figure. Best, Christopher -

Both. I'll see if I can post a screen grab of the before and after timeline. Best, Christopher -
Milestone vs ExacqVision

Yes, they certainly need to fix this. That said, I can't remember the last time my equipment lost power other than scheduled UPS maintenance. I think it was during the Enron scam. But you are right; they need to fix this. Best, Christopher -

It's possible mine may have reconnected in 5 minutes. I didn't wait that long. I unchecked and rechecked each camera and they reconnected instantly. On the first reboot, they all reconnected instantly. On the next two reboots, they did not. Only tested it three times. Best, Christopher -

I tried it several more times. The system reboots in about 8 seconds, and the cameras "may" reconnect in about that period, but the reconnection may also hang. Seems to be random. I unchecked then rechecked each camera, and they all reconnected. Apparently, there is a problem. I'm still using Exacq 4.5 on Ubuntu 10. Have not upgraded to Exacq 4.6 or Ubuntu 11 yet. From the time it started the reboot to the time I could see the cameras on a remote computer was about 12 seconds. Best, Christopher -

Mine all reconnect, but I only have a couple of manufacturers (Axis cameras, Axis video encoders, and Panasonic camera). Best, Christopher -

Installers on this forum claim they never get any requests for iPhone/iPad access. Based on that sample, Avigilon is probably getting the same feedback from other installers, in which case, iOS is probably on the back burner. I think the Exacq iOS app is quite useful, and is one of the compelling reasons I remain with Exacq. Two other reasons are 1) SMTP implementation (Exacq has the best email support in the industry), and 2) Exacq bundles scheduling with their standard product, whereas Avigilon requires an enterprise license. Best, Christopher -
Why is it that Exacq always works and most other devices fail? Best, Christopher

He wanted to know how I was able to catch six criminals in a two year span. It's a very good question, but most people are not interested in knowing the answer. Most homeowners just want some cameras that will record the theft. The installers make money on the installation, the burglars make money on the sale of stolen property, and the homeowners get to post a video of the theft on YouTube. Everyone is happy. The OP is asking about a wired alarm system, not a wired CCTV surveillance system. Best, Christopher

Here are two more important equations: Camera motion false alarm >> PIR motion false alarm PIR motion positive alarm in total darkness >> Camera motion positive alarm in total darkness The last time the police came to pick up my written report to give to the DA, he said, "Can I ask you a question? How are you doing this?" Granted, most people are happy with a grainy video clip of the two dudes stealing stuff from their car that they can post to YouTube. In which case, no PIRs needed or that. Any Costco surveillance system will work fine just fine. Best, Christopher

The Q7404 uses four IP addresses. Perhaps that is why they went from one port to four. Best, Christopher -
To minimize problems with insects, I use IR illuminators mounted a couple feet from the camera. To solve complex motion issues such as rain and wind, I use outdoor PIRs. Optex and Crow make excellent outdoor PIRs. Best, Christopher
