    Shutter speed AND frame rate

I don't think it's the IR or the camera. I'm guessing it's the color. I have an Axis 223M and RayMax Fusion 50. A very dark blue sweatshirt that I own appears bright white and much brighter than a medium pair of blue jeans. I've seen various dark deep colors reflect the IR very brightly and while some lighter colors don't reflect much IR. Best, Christopher

    Shutter speed AND frame rate

Some CCTV cameras offer slow shutter speed called Sens-up. The feature can be useful in low light when objects of interest are stationary or moving relatively slowly compared to the shutter speed. The Samsung SHC-745, for example, offers a slow shutter range to Sens-up 256x. Best, Christopher
  3. Need a camera that can detect intruders in total darkness? http://www.axis.com/products/video/camera/thermal/products.htm Best, Christopher Edit: I called Axis sales. MSRP is $2999 for indoor and $3499 with outdoor enclosure. Anticipate shipments will begin in next 12-14 days.
  4. Correct. This is ideal for detection in star light or less. How many people, are they walking, which direction, that sort of thing. No IR needed, even in total darkness. Best, Christopher
  5. IP + PoE + low price for thermal is big news. I just checked some online prices for the Samsung STC-14 Thermal Security Camera and found some in the $7k - $8k range. I thought I had seen some in the $5K - $6K range last year, but I could be wrong or perhaps the retail prices have been increased. In any case, the street price for the Axis will be significantly less than the previously available competitors, even if they sell at MSRP. Best, Christopher
  6. Extremely. Can you post or PM your retail price. Best, Christopher
  7. How are unique MAC address ranges given to manufacturers? Are the ranges accessible to the public? Can this information be used to identify a manufacturer? Possibly even a chip type? Best, Christopher Edit: Found this http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/oui.txt
  8. That's a 1/3" Super HAD CCD with D1 resolution. It had better beat the pants off any multi-megapixel in low light. If CCTV resolution is OK and you want low light and H.264, attach a 1/2" Exview CCTV (e.g. Samsung SHC-745) to an Axis H.264 video encoder. That combination would be tough to beat in low light. Again, assuming CCTV resolution is acceptable. Best, Christopher

    frame rate

Your budget is reasonable, but be aware that person identification is a challenging problem. Is this during the day, night, or both? Indoors, outdoors, or both? Is this a person you know or a total stranger? Why do you want to ID them? For example, someone breaks into your car, and you want to give an ID to the police, something like that? Best, Christopher
  10. What is your favorite 1U Linux rackmount system and why? Best, Christopher
  11. Has anyone used any of the new Axis video encoders that use the ARTPEC-3 processor? If so, what are your impression of the video quality compared to other solutions? Best, Christopher
  12. I've read through several dozen reviews on Amazon regarding USB Ethernet adapters. Apparently, many are USB 1.1, not that I actually intend to use if for Ethernet traffic, but would like one that is easily recognized and supported by Windows XP/Vista/7 and Linux. Best, Christopher

    Luxriot Pros/Cons?

Thanks. It's all working fine. Glad I drilled this down. Best, Christopher Edit: FWIW, I struggled trying to get this to work after watching the tutorial. The video says to "select the file type", and I tried two formats (.mov and .avi), both of which had unsatisfactory results. I thought I was having problems setting the start and stop markers, but it was apparently a problem with the codecs. The video tutorials are brief and to the point, which is good, but it would likely be helpful to others to include just a quick sentence or two about codecs and file types in the tutorial.

I'll try it, but why is .mov and .avi available if they don't work? Best, Christopher

    Luxriot Pros/Cons?

OK, thanks. When I use this technique for one motion clip, the playback speed in Quicktime and Windows Media Player is real time. However, when I select multiple motion clips to be combined for export, the playback speed is approximately 1/15 real time. In other words, the QT time line has to advance about 15 seconds to advance the security camera time 1 second. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Best, Christopher
  16. Will do. I should probably order a USB MAC dongle since I anticipate moving the licenses in the future. Best, Christopher
  17. My best low light is an Axis 223M. Oh yeah, I should add, mounted next to a 50W RayMax. I have the new Pano 502 that does pretty well with residential street lighting, but I'm guessing the dual sensor Mobotix and Arecont do better. Best, Christopher
  18. Yes, of course. Just bein' silly. And dreamin'. I have the 1D Mark II. Would love to upgrade to the recently announced Mark IV. Anyway, back to security cameras. Yes, I understand where you are coming from, but many of us need the low light. System design is always about trade-offs. You need detail. Some of us need low light. Until sensor designers can add about 5 to 8 more stops, we're forced to compromise one or the other or somewhere in the middle. Best, Christopher

Can you post (or PM) the proposed feature list? Best, Christopher
  20. Yeah, but I think that one was ISO 10000, which is far below the highest setting. Plus, it's in color. Too bad it's impractical to fit a large sensor in a minidome. Big sensors mean ... big lenses. A 35x PTZ would look like a gun on the Missouri. Best, Christopher
  21. OK, you want detail? You want low light? Check out this night shot from the new Canon 1D Mark IV. Gorgeous. Best, Christopher
  22. Thanks. I was strongly considering the AverMedia EH5216, but for a variety of reasons, I think the Axis Q7404 and Exacq is a better solution for me. Best, Christopher

... the date changes on the calender when you scrole left or right on the time line Thanks. I thought I had tried that. I see that now. I think the time line could be easier to read, but at least I now see the date. - The 2x play button does not initiate a render, and does nothing until the clip has been rendered by some other action. I'm guessing this could be fixed with a single line of code. Clip has to fully load before you can 2x plus or min Well, 2x works fine if I hit play and then immediately hit 2x. It plays at 2x speed while it is rendering. Why is it necessary to hit two button to get this affect? Why can't the 2x button start the render and play at 2x speed with just one click? - UI should include thumbnails of the triggers. - Exports should use unique file names, not reuse the same file name and overwrite the last export. I see your point - Selecting the start and stop points of a clip to export is tedious at best. I find this very easy. Right click "mark start", right click "mark end", right click "export video" Yes, but don't you have to right click within a clip? Don't know if this is typical, but all my clips are motion clips. They average 10 to 30 seconds, and are very narrow on the time line. So, I just want to right click to the left and right of the clip to select it, but I can't get that to work. I have to right click inside the clip, and if it's narrow because I have not zoomed in, it's very tedious to get the beginning and ending. Do you follow my description? Am I missing an easier method? Do you zoom all the way in before export? - Implement a feature to combine multiple motion clips into one clip at export. You can from multiple cameras So, it can combine motion clips from multiple cameras, but can't combine motion clips from one camera? Basically, if I have a few seconds of motion on one camera at 7:01, then again at 7:15, then again at 8:03, is it possible to export all three clips into one video clip? - And, not a playback/export issue per se, the implementation of time zone needs to be ONVIF compliant.

Is there a planned feature list for 4.0? Is 4.0 in beta? Is there an anticipated release date? Best, Christopher

    Luxriot Pros/Cons?

Here are a few suggestions: - The time line gives no clue about the date. The time line could say 11:30, but is that 11:30 today, yesterday, or last week? The only way to know is to start from a known date, and then keep track in your head how much back-and-forth scrolling has been done. - The 2x play button does not initiate a render, and does nothing until the clip has been rendered by some other action. I'm guessing this could be fixed with a single line of code. - UI should include thumbnails of the triggers. - Exports should use unique file names, not reuse the same file name and overwrite the last export. - Selecting the start and stop points of a clip to export is tedious at best. - Implement a feature to combine multiple motion clips into one clip at export. - And, not a playback/export issue per se, the implementation of time zone needs to be ONVIF compliant.
