    You are confusing lenses with sensors and pixels. The title of this thread notwithstanding, this thread is about 1/2" lenses vs 1/3" lenses. It has nothing to do with pixel size. Yes, assuming the same sensor technology, larger pixels will gather more light than smaller pixels, but that is a different discussion. Best, Christopher

    No, lenses don't work that way. Here's a thought experiment that might help. Assume a 1/2" sensor and 1/2" lens. Now, put masking tape around the edges of the 1/2" sensor to convert it to a 1/3" sensor. Does the cropped 1/3" sensor now get more light because it has been cropped? No. The light that falls on the cropping mask is just wasted. A larger lens does gather more light, but that light is focused on a larger circle. If you only use the center of the available light, it does not affect the f stop. Best, Christopher

    I don't think the OP is asking about the size of the sensor. Rather, I think the OP is asking about the size of the lens. The OP has the option of using either a 1/3" lens or 1/2" lens, and is asking of there is any advantage to using a 1/2" lens on a 1/3" sensor. At least, that's my understanding of the question.     Did you ever have the need to monitor alarms and/or control devices using a web browser over TCP/IP, and do it cheaply? I just stumbled onto this $35 device. It not only supports a web browser, but can send email based on state change of a digital input.   7. I don't quite understand the software installation instructions for the 502. I was able to change the IP address and open an html page for the camera, but when I click setup, it requests a user name and password that I can not find in the manual.   8. One more comment on the SIP-100. The pattern is extremely narrow (10' wide at 330' range), which is perfect for this application. This PIR is used to monitor a foot path about 280' from the sensor, and there are trees and fences and structures all around, but there is a very narrow clear line of site to the intended target. On a windy day, the moving branches on either side of the line of site do not cause any false alarms. Suweet. Best, Christopher
  9. You're right, and I thought about adding a longer explanation when I typed that. The SIP-100 has three ranges, a long range, mid range, and creep zone. Each of the three zones has four independent sensitivity settings. What I meant by the cat and no false alarms is that you can set the sensitivity to trigger on small animals and still not get false alarms (meaning there is nothing there or just the wind). The sensitivity can be adjusted so that small animals do not trigger the device (the more common definition of false alarm). I now have it set for the latter (trigger on people but not small animals). I'm pretty sure I'm getting near perfect alarms (all people and no cats), but I won't know for certain until I complete the install of the new camera so I can review all events over a couple of weeks.   10. Yes, I'll post more after the install is complete, but the construction is top end and the indoor images on the test bench look great. The auto back focus is also a welcome addition. Next project is to build and paint a simple support frame to mount under the eves. The newly installed SIP-100 long range PIR is working great. The long-range narrow beam mirror can detect a cat at 330' in total darkness with virtually no false alarms. Have not yet tested the camera motion detection, but the plan is to use the PIR to augment the camera's detection. Best, Christopher

    Dry contact refers to the PIR output relay, right? How do you know one input won't leak to another when connected in parallel? The load on the PIR relay should be well within specs. My only concern is connecting the inputs in parallel. I was reading one schematic that used diodes to resolve potential problems with connecting inputs in parallel. Unfortunately, it's an Ademco LYNX wireless and I don't think that model is compatible with their relay panel. Best, Christopher

    If all the input devices were the same manufacturer, that might be an option, but given that there are three different manufacturers, I've been told it's a bad idea to wire them in parallel. I know this is pretty simple stuff for the alarm folks. They wire up an RB7 or RBOC7 in their sleep, or in some cases, just make a diode matrix. I know I could manage with a simple wiring diagram, but I don't see anything similar on the Altronix website. Best, Christopher

    There is no DVR. The IP cameras write directly to the NAS. Assume there is no "rest of the setup" except for 12VDC power. How would you expand a single NO/NC output to multiple NO/NC outputs? Specifically, what part(s) would you use. Best, Christopher

    Optex PIR will trigger an Axis 223M, Panasonic WV-NW502S, Ademco alarm. The Optex has NO/NC output. I'll have to double check the spec for the 502, but I think all three input devices can be triggered by either NO or NC state change. So, basically, the NO/NC output of the Optex has to be expanded to three NO/NC outputs. Best, Christopher

  18. Do you mean IR or white LED? IR does not render color the same as the visible spectrum (e.g. dark blue can appear white on camera). Best, Christopher
  19. Thanks. I checked the IEEE specification and as I suspected the power is supplied on two pairs (4 wires). However, as you note, the current is significantly less for the same power. In any case, the recommended wire is cheap and it's falling-off-a-log easy just to do it right the first time. Best, Christopher
  20. I need an indoor enclosure to organize some DIN rail PCBs and other DIN rail components. Any suggestions? The Altronix enclosures are affordable and easy to find, but are not specifically designed for DIN rails and require drilling. Best, Christopher

    Outdoor motion detectors

    I just installed the newly released Optex Redwall SIP-100 PIR with a 100 meter long range narrow beam detection. I have it focused on a foot patch about 80 meters from the PIR. It was pricey, but it works great. I also have a couple of the wireless Optex units. Those also work great. The outdoor wireless capability makes it possible to mount them almost anywhere. Optex also recently released the new wireless version of their beam detectors. Best, Christopher

    28VAC Power Supply

    Is there a tap for 24VAC? I have Altronix 24VAC power supply that can be configured for either 24VAC or 28VAC by switching the taps from the transformer. Best, Christopher
