Using two cameras, I'd like to (i) get reliable facial recognition of people who come to my front door; and (ii) get reliable license plate recognition of cars that drive down my street. Our street has had a lot of break-ins and shenanigans lately, and my hope would be to provide evidence in the event of another such event (and possibly deter it from happening). We've already taken other measures (lighting, alarm, signs about dogs and alarms, etc.).
I'd say my budget is something like $2,000, but it would be nice if it came in closer to $1,000 or under.
I have an installer coming out next week to do a site survey and give an estimate, but I'm tempted to do this myself (and even if I didn't, I need to know what I'm talking about so I can be sure the installer knows what they're doing).
The first camera would presumably be mounted over my door, so I'm thinking a good dome camera. The second would likely be mounted in a tree or on a pole. The street is not particularly well lit, but I do live at a rise in a hill and therefore have a good, long view of the approach along my street.
I'm leaning toward stand-alone DVR for the simplicity of it (though I built my own PC and am very comfortable with technology).
I would appreciate any thoughts or recommendations you think might be helpful.
Many thanks.
