video encoder recommendations?
bpzle replied to alpine0000's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Encoders are very expensive... I would personaly rather invest encoder $ into IP cams. You could get 2x MP IP cams for the price of a decent 4 ch encoder... May I ask what the apeal is to Exacq when using analog cams? Avermedia hybrid capture cards are fairly inexpnsive in comparison to encoders, and you won't have to buy any IP licenses... After you phase out your analog cams, sell the Aver capture card and upgrade to Exacq! -
Color only cam. It cannot see IR.

haha nice observations. my head is constantly on a swivel for cameras, network gear, POSs, TVs, pro audio, pro video, concert lighting, fueling systems, 2way radios, and anything communications related. generally anything with blinking lights or buttons. if i don't know the make/model it drives me nuts. i can't believe i'm still married.

Cameras Mounted on Stucco Walls
bpzle replied to Ferrino's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I would strongly advise throwing that cable in the trash and using rg59 an 18/2 siamese OR cat5 w/ baluns. Those premade cables will degrade the quality of video, and pinch/ break very easily. Couple that with already having connectors on them... a total pain for fishing. -

I agree with numb nuts... you're on the right track. Good quality gear is important. Do it right so you can set it and forget it. I prefer Cat5 for almost all cable runs... its so neat that it can run almost anything. Things with Made in China stickers... seem to have more duds and things that catch fire than others. Don't go with a packaged system, as the cameras incuded are usually next to worthless. Your budget is very do-able for analog or 704x480 cameras. Spec sheets can be misleading. They'll tell you lots of half truths and try to sell you on things that don't matter like number of LEDs. That's one of my fav.. My surefire has a single LED and its 100x brighter than a harbor freight flashlight wit 50 LEDs. I would strongly advise that unless you find a trustworthy and knowledgable dealer, that you should try a single camera out at a time. The only thing worse than a crappy camera is a box full of crappy cameras. -
No problem. I don't currently have any CNBs online... I might be able to scrounge up some snapshots from testing.

Mobotix: Slow Framerate, Disappointing Quality
bpzle replied to Quantum's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Try the tech support from you supplier. I've found my Mobotix supplier to be quite knowledgeable... -
Would you mind starting a new thread, and telling everyone what you just told us? I believe sharing your story would be for a greater good... if you're having problems, he had problems, there's something not right about that. Chances are, others have problems. The added benefit you would get to sharing is it adds public perception into the mix and so it may light a fire under Zmodo's arse. Thanks!

I agree its not your fault... Let's face it... in residential, how often do you need a wireless camera that has a line of sight (lOS) back to the recviever? If you had a LOS you wouldn't need a damn camera or even wireless! Lol! In my opinion devices like what you bought on the cheap on Ebay are misleading. The average user just assumes if their iPhone can be as awesome as it is and not have wires, so can a CCTV camera. Not so much... The sellers and Chinese manufacturers get away with it because they market to the inexperienced and put in fine print that its for LOS only. Sneaky SOBs....

^what he said. What's happening is the lens is in the middle to, or extreamly close to the powerful light source. Similar to holding a very bright flashlight on a dark night peering into the distance, while holding it near your face... You're going to see the light's "beam" and all the dust in the air... Tunnel vision, if you will. Another disadvantage to having integrated IR... is you attract insects near the camera lens. Exhibit A:

BNC Crimp plugs, which type is best?
bpzle replied to Numb-nuts's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Good answer Rory! I always LOL a little when this subjects gets brought up... and it does quite frequently given the industry. There's no shortage of hard headed opinions in any profession...but at the end of the day we all take pride in what we do and we get the job done with what's availible to us. (But for the record, I tend to embrace new technology. When I must use coax, compression fittings are a no brainer for me. In my opinion, they are the newest and most practical connectors I've used to-date. ) -

It sucks for the customers, but it just makes the good guys look that much better. If everyone was as honest as your company, you wouldn't be so successful. Good story oldtimer! -
The customer is looking for a LIVE viewing. I would not recommend a IP system for this setup. Agreed.
