    Non-flash cameras

Hi all, I'm thinking of setting up a home security system that has one or two cameras activated by motion sensors. I'm interested in using a non-video camera with a flashbulb, partly because a bright flash and click seems like it'd be a pretty good theft deterrent, but mostly because it seems that one good, clear, properly lit, high-resolution photo of the startled face of someone prowling in my backyard would be far more useful than a few hundred dark, blurry frames that can't get an accurate color of an intruder's clothes, much less a clear face shot. Another reason is that by themselves, static cameras seem to be a lot cheaper than similar-quality video ones. I'd like to keep the costs for this project to a minimum (say, $150 budget). Has this been done? What are some implications of using static cameras intead of video, with or without flash? I don't know squat about photography or CCTV, but I'm a handy DIYer in general, and not a complete dolt when it comes to circuits and electronic contraptions. Technical questions about how to pull it off will follow, but I'm hoping to get some feedback on the general idea first.
