  1. The RS-485 standard is a three wire connection. It's a differential pair but each signal pin is referenced to ground. Now whether the manufacturer understood this or not is another matter. Failure to reference these pins to ground can potentially cause big problems for when the signal goes out of the valid +/- range the transceiver chip can overheat and kick in the protection circuitry to shut it down (best case) or burnout the part completely (worst case). But you don't have to believe me. Here's a link: http://www.chipkin.com/articles/rs485-cables-why-you-need-3-wires-for-2-two-wire-rs485 Any device that implemented two wire rs-485 is designed incorrectly. Yes, it will generally work fine on short runs but for longer runs with different ground potentials at the drops trouble can bite you.
  2. And *that* is the root of the problem
  3. It's fine that moderators can decide what is sticky but moderators cannot identify which threads that individual users might like to keep sticky. So the suggestion doesn't defeat the purpose of sticky's, it enhances it by allowing individual customization. It does not preclude moderators from making stickys. The 'mark all as read' feature as implemented does not work the way I suggested. Yes, it marks all as read, then goes to some other page and you have to manually return to the main page. I'd rather "mark all as read and return to main forum index". With a decent usenet reader that stuff can easily be done with one click and not a click-wait-click-wait sequence. In fact I'd like to see a mark-as-read capability from the main forum index. There are some subgroups that I just don't care about. This type of stuff is generally lacking on all web based forums and I'm not picking on CCTV in particular.
  4. If you're still looking for suggestions here are some from the perspective of a long time usenet user. There are some things that a good usenet news reader can do that a web forum can't and it would be nice to see some crossover of certain features into a web based forum. Here's my list. 1. Killfiles so that posts from certain individuals (spammers) are automatically deleted from a members view. 2. The ability to mark a thread ignored so new posts to the thread do not show up as unread posts. 3. The ability to only subscribe to those forums that are interesting to a member (i.e. customize a members home page so that only those forums of interest are displayed). 4. The ability to make forum threads sticky on a per-user basis. What is useful to one member may not be useful to another. 5. A one-click 'mark this forum read' button from a forums page that will mark all threads read and return to the main forum index.
  5. Somebody posted here recently who bought a Lorex system from Costco and was having lots of problems with condensation in the outdoor cameras. FWIW.
  6. I'm new around here but this multiple posting of the same promo seems like spam to me.
  7. Yes this has been going on for some time and it is SPAM and I wish the moderators would block this jackass already. I've tried reasoning with this spammer in hopes of getting him to be a contributing member of the group but that hasn't worked. And I surely won't be buying any cameras from him. I'm a new member as well and primarily lurk. I dislike spammers. I won't be buying anything from him either. I think he's the same guy who spammed me via PM but I can't verify that since I deleted it immediately (but his avatar looks very familiar).
  8. The 221 pdf I downloaded only lists one. What is the procedure for the full reset? Thanks. There is two ways to perform a factory settings default. One is the way you described with the cycle power and hold down the reset button. The other is to log into the came from a web browser and inside the Maintenance area, inside this area is an option for factory default including IP or not including IP. IF you are not the origonal owner/admin of this camera my guess is the person who had it before you performed a factory default without reseting IP and the camera would not override that until a new root password was setup. OK, thanks. The original owner would be me. I was sort of dinking around with it when I first bought it figuring that a factory reset could put it in a known state when the time came to install it. Whoops.
  9. I've got an Axis 221 that doesn't seem to factory reset and the password is lost. A factory reset doesn't restore it or the default IP address. Axis Camera Management utility continues to show a "Credentials Mismatch" error with an IP address that seems to be assigned by the DHCP server (not the factory default of 192.168.0.90). The factory reset procedure is being done per the docs (disconnect power, hold the reset button in, reconnect power, wait until status indicator turns amber, release button, wait until status turns green). Anyone see this before and have a solution?
  10. The 221 pdf I downloaded only lists one. What is the procedure for the full reset? Thanks.
  11. Never mind, I got it working. By going into 'live view' mode it prompts for the entry of a new master password and that got it working. I don't understand why it didn't reset to the default IP address though.
  12. Not an expert but I'm betting your outdoor cam does need waterproofing. Condensation will likely take its toll even if it stays completely dry in the rain.

    Hello from boiling Arizona

Welcome. I grew up and went to school there, in Tempe, and moved out as soon as possible. Can't say I miss it. We still have family there but do our best to only visit in the winter.

    Need advice on system design

I'm new to this myself but it seems if you want a mobile and expandable system then IP wireless would be the way to go. That way you don't have to mess with running wires to wherever the camera is needed on a given day. It would be easy to expand with additional wireless cameras as the system grows. If there is a large coverage area it would be easy to either put the recording system (pc, dvr, etc) and wireless access point on a mobile cart and wheel it around, or add additional wireless access points or repeaters to extend the system. Plus you could use much higher resolution cameras than analog, which may well make the difference between identifying a face or not. Analog would not give you a choice of higher resolution.

    LAN bandwidth tester

Many routers and managed switches can report performance stats.
  16. Do you guys sell a Linux based mini that supports 16 IP cameras? Somebody here said you do but the info available on-site says the maximum is 8 cameras. BTW, I sent this question to the sales link on your web site 5-6 days ago and never received an answer.

    16 channel IP Mini

I have had two systems that used IE, a cisco router that worked with IE 5 and my current security panel that worked with IE 6. Subsequent releases of IE were not backwards compatible. I had to trash the router but at least the security panel still works with Firefox. ActiveX is evil.
  18. Is anyone here a dealer for Exacq products? If so, I'd like to discuss my surveillance needs with you to see if Exacq offers a reasonable solution. Please PM to discuss. Thanks.
  19. It wasn't clear if this post belonged in the IP section or dedicated DVR section so please move it if it's in the wrong place. I'm a newbie and will be installing up to 16 IP cameras in and around our rural home and am looking for a video recording solution to meet our needs. Of course we need to view video from home and from remote locations over the internet. A drop-in, hassle free, reliable solution would be ideal. I could build up a computer and futz around with various packages to build it up but I do that stuff all day long for work and it's pretty much the last thing I want to mess around with after hours. For this reason a dedicated NVR is very appealing, but a turnkey Non-Windows PC-based software solution that was as reliable as the hardware it ran on would be considered. I'd like to keep maybe 30 days of storage and have the option of copying significant video events to backup devices if/when required. The cameras would normally record at a very slow frame rate and then record at full motion when motion is detected. Cameras would be in the Axis 221/225FD class. Given these customer desires what sort of solutions would you folks with experience recommend? Price is always an object but I'm not expecting a dirt cheap solution. Something in the $2-$3k range maybe.
  20. Is there anyone here who sells Exacq?
  21. When you say remote access can be done by web browser, does it work with firefox?
  22. It's not Axis Camera Station software I worry about, it's Windows. Windows is the weak link on any PC running Windows. Nuuo is out of the running since it only supports remote browsing with IE. The Exacq software looks very interesting.

    4 channel NUUO miniNVR

It's amazing that it supposedly runs on linux but doesn't support firefox.

    16 channel IP Mini

I am curious price and availability, if it supports 16 IP channels it sounds like what I'm looking for. Their literature is confusing though. For example, on the NUUO mini data sheet (on bluecherry) it says "linux based" and then continues to say " Windows 2000/ XP/ 2003/ Vista" and IE 6 or later required. What's that about? Will it work with firefox? Does it have any sort of trigger output for interfacing to an alarm panel? Is the NUUO software ZM based or completely different? Is there an active forum anywhere where users discuss their NUUO experiences? I see it mentioned here from time to time but rarely does anyone discuss it from a customer standpoint. Just getting me feet wet here so there's a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for the info.
  25. If spending a few $k saves a weekend of initial assembly and configuration, a month of debug, updating, and fiddling to get everything working just right, and a warranty with some initial support help if needed I'd rather spend the dough. I've been looking at ZM but there are enough problems reported there that I'm inclined not to mess with it. Many problems there aren't the fault of ZM, but a lot of time can be burned by screwing around until the magic formula for fixing them is found.
