Don't bother using a single channel DVR and using your multiplexer. You'll lose all the cctv features. e.g. enlarging any of the camera during playback, motion detection, etc.

Is network impotant to you ? The prob with all CPCam/AVTech's network design is that they just plug and video webserver to the unit and then call them network DVR. This mean that when you are accessing from the net, and you select channel 1, EVERYONE, including the person sitting in front of the Video monitor connected to the DVR, will see the Screen change to Channel 1. Select Channel 2, same thing will happens. So if the net user change channel, person sitting in front of the dvr monitor will know someone's watching. Also, if everyone want to see different channel, you'll have a channel fight.

well.. you can try the Avtech new line of video server. Runs on Java applet. Also software. Tried on opera browser, it works. It also support viewing on handphone that support J2EE mindlets. The CPD570's one 16 channels DVR that has this build in. going for ard USD$xxxx here in singapore. The video server am not too sure of the price, have to check it out. It's new yet so I have seen it in the market except hearing from avtech that it'll be out soon. The older video server runs on activex. But personally, imho, if you running primary window OS, get something that run on activex. Don't bother with java. It takes so much more resources that it slow the whole machine. I've tried the older AVTech video server (activex) and the newer one (java)(on CPD507). On my machine, the activex one works perfectly fine, but the Java's slow down the whole machine, and takes forever to be up and running. sometimes it also hang my machine. I changed to a faster machine, it works better. But java interface's laggier. From my expereice, it's better to go for standalone. much safer. Am staying away from window based system. Had encounter with window based system from kodicom (fully assembled and shipped from kodicom, not those pirated self assembled one), that also develope problem over time and get slower and slower to startup and resume, and record. I believe that's inheritantly the Window OS problem. When harddisk goes down, and it does more and more frequently with the substandard products coming from all the major harddisk manufacturer, it's just going to be a pain in the ass using pc based system that has the OS installed on the same harddisk. Get it back up and running will take so much longer. I rather those standalone system. yank out the existing harddisk, replace a new one, and plug it back in to get it up and running again. Used it before. Frankly speaking, the Network features sucks. Haa.. Seems like i had been complaining abt the network feature of various dvr. Can't help it, remote monitoring's important to me. Can you imagine typing in the IP address everytime you want to log on to the DVR ? YES, the IP Address. You'll have to key in the IP address each and every time you want to log on to the system. First, it has no web server build in. You'll either have to install the webserver on another machine, or use the one provided on the avermedia website. Then, you'll have to key in the IP address and the password. You can't even key in a host name. that means if you are on DDNS, you'll have to first ping and then retreive the IP address, and then manually key in (copy and paste don't work coz the input screen request u to key in the 4 x 3 numbers). On slower machine, the video images is terriblely slow and freez the machine. We tried in on P4 Celeron 1.8Ghz w/256MB ram w/ONboard graphic card. Don't really work on it. But on another machine, it's better. Support live audio streaming as well. But (i'll have to repeat myself again), the network feature cannot make it !!! It's going for ard USD$xxx over here in singapore. Add USD$20 for the optional remote contoller. [edit by mod - please only retail end user pricing]

If network feature's an afterthought, you can consider AVTech product. otherwise, look for some other model. Anyway, if you are looking for 4 Channel AVTech DVR w/ Network http://www.avtech.com.tw/english/product_13_773w.htm It's selling for USD$xxx over here. Encounter another DVR w/network, also from taiwan, can't remember the model. WIth network , it cost ard USD$xxx PM me if you interested in the model, i'll go look it up. Quality wise not too sure, but in Singapore, if you use a Avermedia's EB1004BAK http://www.avermedia.com/cgi-bin/products_security_eb1004.asp?show=9 and 2 X 250GB haddisk, it'll be ard USD$xxx. Triplex recording, support 2 harddisk of up to total 800GB (based on 400GB max in the market currently), remote multisite monitoring software. Suppore IE viewing as well. Price's ard USD$1.1k. Comes with remote contoller, backupable to USB, support PTZ camera. Minus point is it record in A-MJpeg formate. They do have wavelet/mpeg4 series as well. But they are pricer. 4 Channel's ard USD$660.

I personally tried this DVR myself. Anyone with experience with other CPCam/AVTech (Same manufacturer, market under different brandname) will find this new product similar to their other products such as AVC777, etc. Enhancement over their older products, 1. Triplex (Their older product all simplex) 2. USB Backup. 3. Remote Controller. 4. 400FPS display (Their previous one was a sucky 60FPS display) 5. 400FPS recording at LOWEST resolution. (Better than nothing, their older one record at 18FPS. 6. Web base remote monitoring vie JAVA applet. 7. Downloadable software to run. 8. Support Java enabled phone to do monitoring vie 3G/GPRS. But please note that if NETWORK feature is IMPORTANT to you, you might want to consider other model. The AVTech/CPCam network feature sucks big time. They basically just take a video webserver connect it to the output of the DVR video out, and embedded it into the system, and then hook on the feedback from the remote client to the dvr control. This mean that whatever the remote user press on the remote client, he'll be virtually pressing on the dvr itself. This mean that if there is a user sitting in front of the DVR, and then another user viewing through the remote client, the remote user press channel 1, BOTH the DVR monitor and the remote client will switch to channel 1 only. If there's 2 remote user, both want to see different channel, they'll be fighting over for the channel. This is ridiculas for a professional DVR design. This also happens for ALL avtech/cpcam dvr's network feature. But all u need is a simple network feature, this would be ok if you are the only user that need to view occassionally vie remote client.
