Does it have a thermal overload - is it overheating?

Can you access the DVR from a computer connected through the router? If you can do that the problem is more than likely with the router settings. Have you checked if its a problem with port forwarding for your router? Have you checked that the port open?

Are you wanting to connect over a LAN, WAN or Internet?

I'm a bit confused. Is email and FTP actually sending a file(s)? That is, you can send files but the content is not what you expected? What o/s (Win, Linux) and FTP server are you using? I've got a post under Computers/Networking 'cause the DVR FTP session is being terminated by the server before the file is sent. So if you can actually upload something/anything to an FTP server I'd love to know more details please.

When you say reset do you mean the DVR restarts itself? I had a similar problem. I checked the power cable connection and found it was slightly loose. Also found that the DVR sometimes does a reset/reboot when viewing recorded images while its still recording live. A bit temperamental. I found it is more stable to download the images and view them from a local source rather than directly from the DVR. Have you been able to determine what is happening at the time of the reset/reboot?

Thanks soundy . Not a lot of help from the Ubuntu forum so far. There are a lot of very good people over there but also a lot of dead wood. I think my problem has something to do with ConsoleKit and the PAM. There is a method in ConsultKit named GetDisplayDevice. The DVR doesn't have a display device like a 'normal' FTP client so I'm guessing it has something to do with that. I've been hoping someone could explain how to prevent the GetDisplayDevice from occurring. I don't know if its in a conf file or hardcoded somewhere. Do you know any good reference sites? I'd like to be able to disable it just for a particular user (ie the DVR). Thanks for the suggestion re the log files - I did that already. That's where I found that the DVR session is closing after the "cannot determine display-device" error. Its in the auth.log. I was thinking of adding an ExtendedLog to see if that turned up anything useful. What do you think? I'd love to know if someone else in the forum has setup autobackup through FTP on a DVR?

Have you tried a packet sniffer?

Still trying to figure this out. I found that the auth.log shows an error "cannot determine display-device". The user session is then closed. Anyone know what the DVR sends to the FTP server?

If you can view live images with the laptop it has to be something pretty simple that has been overlooked. What browser and version did you use on the laptop? How does that compare to the other PC's. More likely to be browser settings - Have you compared the browser settings on the laptop to the settings on the other PC's. Have you compared the ActiveX controls? Are proxy settings the same? Same add-ons? Are you viewing through a LAN or WAN? Does the Laptop connect through the same network devices? Are the firewall settings the same for the laptop as the other PC's? Are you using static or dynamic IP's - Compared laptop to other PC's?

I have set up an FTP Server (proftpd) on a Linux box on my LAN. I have a 16 channel DVR - VER M5-3.02 and have configured it to FTP 'File' - also tried 'Event'. Autoback up is on. It is logging in to the Server but its not sending the files. I thought it might be a directory problem but think I have eliminated that - tried empty 'directory' entry and also tried '/'. The Server looks to be setting the directory ok on login. I can up load to the server from an FTP client without a problem - tried small and large files in case it was a size issue. Its got me stumped. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
