Oh. On my Bionic Parabloic Mircophone, if it hears a sound that is too loud it shuts down quickly and then comes back on. I don't know how yours is built, but that is what the Bionic Microphone did to me when wearing the amplified headphones that came with it. So maybe your just catching the echo of the shot? Just pulled it out to look at it. Looks pretty water resistant too. It has a plastic stop tab on it to allow it to be the optimum distance from the dish. It looks to be close to (edit) 2 inches from the very center of the plastic dish. It has a built in amplifier in the microphone. Keep us updated on your progress. It is a good project.

It can be done. But it costs a little bit of money unless you do everything from scratch, which means you need to really understand how it all works together. Here are some links I ran accross. Hopefully there will be something in those to help you out. Principals of a parabolic microphone http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/apr99/923344961.Ph.r.html A guy building his own from scratch http://www3.telus.net/chemelec/Projects/Parabolic-Mic/Parabolic-Mic.htm Specialized microphones http://www.pimall.com/nais/e.mic.html http://www.amazing1.com/accoustics.htm The main problem I see here is the budget. But if you can get it close enought to the source than you don't need as powerful of a microphone. It can be done, but it all costs more money. Also need line of sight for the parabolic microphone as well for best results. When I have used them you still have to point them in specific direction. You can't just place it somewhere an expect it to pick up noise in a 360 degree redius. Maybe try pointing it in different directions.
-
You need a powerful directional microphone. Their fairly expensive. I think you have probably done this, but to make sure, you have to point the microphone towards the inside of your dish or bowl. You can find information on the internet on how to build your own parabolic Mic if you haven't done so already. The microphone is the most important part though. The other mic you had was omnidirectional, which it shouldn't be. You need a directional for best results. Plus that mic was very cheap, intended for very close up vocals.
-
I have one of those. There not very powerfull. Nothing like what he is talking about building. He wants to hear real far away. That microphone you are using is really cheap and the wrong type. Anyway let us know how it turns out.
-
That microphone you used, is it a directional type or omnidirectional?

Many of them have recording jacks out the rear of the units that you can hook up to a tape recorder. If you can find a recorder that has the timer function that will work. I have even used the Voice activation systems on them as well. That would not help unless they did two shots back to back. I have done continous recording using a seperate timer, but this was indoors pointing out. No exposure to weather conditions. The weather is a whole different issue. You will hear everything. And the sensitivity of the microphone will most likely be affected in a negative way as well. Water droplets on it will affect it and any other debri that may collect on it. And of course you have to worry about the electronics of everything involved in order to accomplish this task.

The good ones are expensive. The Dan Gibson Parabolic Microphone has the reputation as being the best available. Pricey though. Can hear a conversation at 400 feet though.

Jasper replied to a94cobra's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
Is that with Geo software, VideoInsight and mayae other DVR cards? Is their software optimized for utilizing the second core on the chip? -

Dual processors system
Jasper replied to a94cobra's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
Well it is always recommended to only use the computer for DVR purposes in a professional install. A single processor is all you need. With a Dual Core you would be able to use the machine to do other tasks while it is recording, but depending on what those tasks are and what software you load you could be asking for potential problems. You could browse the internet and do email, no problem. More software installed though, just adds more variables that can cause a problem that possibly can disrupt your security system. -

Wow I thought you were kidding around. The questions I did ask you were legit questions, I just forgot a couple. Nothing merited this private message to me. From: usnewyork To: Jasper Posted: Wed Jan 25, 2006 12:32 pm Subject: ONLY FOR EXPERTS ? SORRY EXPERT MAN !!!! FOR THE QUESTION. IF YOU THINK THAT THE QUESTION IS BASIC FOR YOU PLEASE GO TO OTHER FORUM. Is there a way too get Larry to trace the IP address on this ID as well as another ID that sent me a weird message I got earlier today? -

Oh yeah. That one has been topped many times. Looks good though. I think it might have been WirelessEye that had some photos awhile back of some InfraRed wirelees giear out in the middle of only god knows where and maybe the military. Another one was a Government install, no photos of course, but that is to be expected. Several others as well posted throughout the forum. -

Jasper replied to a94cobra's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
Not as of yet. The system can offer more stability though. Also the dual core procs run cooler, which is always a good thing. -

How many cameras? What type of compression? What's the highest bandwidth you can afford that is available. That's pretty much it. -

I don't use pliers for twisting them on. Just by hand. I only use my teeth to assist the cable stripping process. -
Some small company in my area did that already. I will be checking out how much upload speed they can offer in the country part of my area. Currenlty can only get 384kbps upstream. This wireless service, very small maket area is 2mpbs upstream, ideally and up to 5mpps upstream. Would be nice. 384kbps is just not enough for streaming video, even if heavily compressed.

And contrary to popular belief, the rate is not five twists per inch: The name Cat 5 is derived from the fact that it was the 5th category of wire that was sanctioned by the EIA/TIA. There is now a Cat 6 and even a Cat 7 with each step an improvement over the former. Category 5e products are tested at 100MHz and are typically used for networks running at 10Mbps or 100Mbps. They are manufactured to higher standards and tighter tolerances than Category 5 cable. However, Category 5e performance pales in comparison with Category 6, which is tested at 250MHz and can be used for either 10/100Mbps networks or Gigabit (1000Mbps) networks. Category 6 is also more resistant to EMI than Category 5e, since it is more tightly twisted and features more twists per inch. I know 5e will do gigabit. All I know for sure is more twists equal better cable. Definately out of my league on intimate knowledge of this subject at this time. Others chime in for additional information.
