Snorting packets, never heard of that term before. Now if I want to every try snort my own packets I at least know what software term to look for. It is amazing what goes on in the networking world. Or the communications world for that matter.

LinkSys WRT54G Router Setup - Can't Access Internet - Flakey
Jasper replied to Jasper's topic in Computers/Networking
No I haven't tried that yet. I just found where that value is displayed, now I have to find where I can change it. Ever since I upgraded the firmware I am lost. The menu structure changed or did. The current value is 1500. Some people appear to have fixed their problem with values of either 1300 or 1400. Now I just have to find where I can change it. I know it is probably hinding in plain sight. Thanks for the tip. Oh, I have a filter multicast box checked. Does anyone know if that could cause any kind of problem with the ISP? EDIT - MTU was right on the very first screen. -
They won't be back. They got what they wanted and have moved on, but I know you guys will be uneasy for awhile, that is to be expected after something like that happens. Talk to you later.

Wecome to the forum. Why? What is the reasoning behind this decision? Asking to get a better idea of what your situation is.

Is 640x480 a more Accurate Size than 720x480
Jasper replied to rory's topic in General Digital Discussion
Good point. The 640x480 ratio is correct, but I believe the 720x480 is 16:9 and is scaled down to 4:3 at least from the prospective of a DVD. The one thing I know for sure is that is is not 1/2. Welcome to the forum. -
Before I made a post I noticed multiple flags indicating several new posts. After I made my post and clicked on the CCTV graphic to take my back to the main page and hit the refresh button as I normally do the flags were gone. This has happened before, but it seems to be happening more often in recent weeks. Anybody else experiencing this problem?

Sorry for your loss and the difficult time this must be for you and your family.

In that magazine I can do anything. Is that the Weekly World News or something like that? I buy one of those every now and then for a good laugh. So if somebody has my IP address what can they do? I want to know what to expect from Rory.

DOS sounds pretty boring unless it is someone you really want to mess with. I started to look into sniffing some packets one day, but I thought what the heck would interest me enough to bother. I guess if you can use a filter to log only the data that interests you that it could be interesting. Have you ever sniffed some packets that were really exciting. Is it just the challenge and the fact of knowing you can see someone elses data? How can I sniff my own packets?

I'm broke, don't do this for a living, not near an airport and don't drink. I can be real entertaining sometimes though. It would be nice to meet all of you who would be there, but I really can't make it. Maybe somebody can take pictures, conduct interviews, etc. And I refuse to put my skirt in storage. Thanks for the invite though, very much appreciated.

LinkSys WRT54G Router Setup - Can't Access Internet - Flakey
Jasper replied to Jasper's topic in Computers/Networking
It is real easy to tell when I don't have outbound communication because I can launch the web browser and my default page, Google, does not come up. Also my little Skype Icon is grey, meaning it wasn't able to log onto the internet. I know how to ping, but I have never changed the packet length, so you learn something new everyday. Thanks. I think it probably is an ISP issue as it worked perfectly when I tested it on a local LAN before putting it out. -
SpyMan, I think blowrabbit meant that in his case he is going to purchase what he considers the more established brands with a good reputation rather than taking a chance on a miss with some other brands. I'm not saying any of the brands you mentioned are not good. I think you pretty much summed it best earlier when you said: "The point? Simple, it shouldn't matter the name brand of the product line you represent, it's your confidence in the gear you promote that will WIN you your customers TRUST and their business. Unless you dealing with Fortune 500 Security Departments, 99.99 % of your clients will have no idea who Pelco, Sensormatic, Bosch, Sanyo, Mace, IC Real Time, etc are. They are relying on your expert advice to recommend the right product(s) to them based upon individual requirements and their budget requirements."

That was great. Was that you grinding your gears? Nice sounding motor. I have done the video taping thing while driving many times. Luckily I have never run anybody over or ran into anybody. That was the traffic tour. Maybe you can get some beach shots while people on spring break are still there?

Has anybody else experienced this problem? It is a shame the video streaming gets interruped and it doesn't start again until you manually intervene and answer the yes/no question.

Well there went my sense of security, no not really. I know that if your connected to the internet or have data flowing through the air you are always susceptible. I’m just glad to have the little lock symbol on my dot in Netstumbler. I walk around my house with my laptop using this program and make adjustments to make the signal just strong enough to give coverage within the house. I have taken off the antennas before to produce a signal just strong enough to reach into the other room. I know if someone has a good antenna they will be able to pick up the signal, but that is where the average person will be stopped by the security encryption, at least I hope so. If not, well like I said I consider my computer an open book anyway. If you don’t want anything too potentially fall into someone else hands don’t put it on your computer. What I think people need to do in addition to having a hardware firewall such as a router is that they install a software firewall as well to prevent unauthorized outbound traffic which could be transmitting your personal information somewhere.

Well that went fairly smooth. Part of my difficulty of doing it before is that my IBM Thinkpad has its own unique program for dealing with wireless networks. Once I figured out how to bypass it and put my key in I got it working. Now neighbors can look, but can't touch.

I still don't think that dome will allow you to see all the way to one side like you think. You can tell by looking at the angle of the camera in the housing and the surrounding IR that would get in the way of it being tilted all the way over. And also if it is not water resistant than it won't work for you anyway. Fas, maybe you should make some calls to some of these places that you have been looking at and ask them specifically if they have a dome in stock that will look sideways like you want. And if they do ask them if they have one that costs no more than a $150 dollars. Trying calling on that camera above and see what they say. Can't hurt. I don't think you want to buy one and try to force it into position though. It seemed to me that the consensus was that you could not get a cameara to meet your needs for $150.

OK Rory I won't tell anyone, didn't plan on it anyway. You never know when you might need that access. And I don’t use any of the IM or stuff like that, heck I can’t even get you to talk to me. VJD, thanks for the info. WPA2 is apparently the same as WPA Pre Shared Key on my router which is supposed to be the best based on the Link Isaac posted. So I will be trying to set that up. Magee, thanks for the link I think that will probably help me. It seems to be a very concise article of just what I needed. Hopefully everything will go as smooth as the article and I will be protected. 7 Signals to choose from that is funny. Full coverage for any area of your place. Me I have to stand by my window with my Laptop if I have a problem with my equipment.

I can relate to the people not setting up their security properly. This new wireless Linksys router has a button on it to make it easier to setup security. My older Linksys does not have this feature. I played around with the security setting a bit when I first bought it and didn’t get it working right away so I gave up. I ended up using the MAC address filtering feature. Even if I had security setup on it I know it could be compromised by someone who knows how to do it. It would keep out most people if I had the strongest level of security setup on it. Now if I am not using my laptop around the house I just turn off the wireless feature. When I first moved into my house and didn’t have my cable internet hooked up yet I was sure glad my neighbor had an unsecured network. It helped me get through a week or so without internet service. Since you brought this up I think I will try to secure my wireless network so I can have it up and operating so I don’t have to go into browser admin screen every time I want internet access for my wireless laptop. What security method do I use? There are more than a few listed in my router. Which is considered the most secure? Once I know that I can see if I can find some directions for helping me set it up.

LinkSys WRT54G Router Setup - Can't Access Internet - Flakey
Jasper replied to Jasper's topic in Computers/Networking
Hmmm. That is not good to hear. I have always thought highly of Linksys knowing it is a division of Cisco, but after what I have been reading and hearing it sound like the consumer end my not be as good as I thought it was. Reset the router, modem and hard rebooted the DVR today and lost outside communication and inbound traffic as well. Left it alone and it started working a little later in the day. Maybe a flakey DSL modem, although the lights on the modem seemed in order at the time of testing. I will remove the router if it keeps up and just open all the necessary ports through windows firewall and see if I have any further problems. If I don't then most likely it is the router. Thanks for the tip on version 5. I won't be trying to update the firmware to that version since you told me that. -
Gigabit Network Swtich in Combo with 10/100 Router, Wireless
Jasper replied to Jasper's topic in Computers/Networking
As it turns out it was working. The regular CAT-5 is able to do Gigabit after all. Turns out that when I was moving files from my Laptop to an external firewire drive on the desktop I was not seeing a speed increase. Once I did a test of copying a file from the Laptop to an internal drive in the desktop I realized a speed increase of 400%. The part that is really weird is that I am reading from an external firewire drive on the laptop and their is only a speed drop when transferring files between the two firewire drives. There must be a lot of overhead involved slowing the transfers down. Anyway it works. I just have to relocated some files in order to realize the benefit. Thanks for the help.
