Does anyone know about another company that makes POS interfaces? http://www.americanvideoequipment.com/ does not support the cash machine I am connecting to (TAC -1060) and www.tvs-inc.com is a major headache to deal with. Fredrik

Hi, We have a system where the customer wants the cash machine data overlayed over the video. They don't need a full POS sysyem with "search by transaction" ability. Does anyone know about a free standing "box" that would do that. The customer is on a budget so. They already have a system with a DVR so I am looking for just a "signal combiner" Thanks, Fredrik

Have you installed any camera systems before? If not, i would not recommend you doing it yourself. Way to many varibles. We have put in hundreds of systems and we are still tweeking the combinations of the components of the systems. What DVR to use is just one of them, and not a very big one. Other things to consider: 1. Remote viewing: Most DVR's now have remote viewing built in but in most cases it does not work very well. Why? Because if you are going to compress a image down to 2-3 k per frame for streaming it is not going to look that great locally ones you blow it up full frame for local viewing, and the whole point is to actually be able to see details on the recorded material. One the other side , if you use a DVR with good recording compression , like Mpeg-2 or Jpeg with 25k per frame, it is not going to stream well for obious reasons. Solution: Get a DVR with a good compression codec and use a separate web server for the streaming part. 2. Cameras: Where you place the cameras and what cameras and lenses you are using is a huge part of the job. Don't ignore that. Mintron, Sanyo and Ganz make great cameras. 3. Use a real CCTV monitor and not a computer LCD monitor. Most of them don't look nearly as good. Cheers, Fredrik

I was thinking of using a storesafe DVR for a job that is coming up but I have a couple of questions. 1. How many HD does the 16 channel use? 2. Can i buy one without the hard drive or a small one and put in a bigger one myself? 3. What's the best place to buy them? ADI or do you get a better deal buying directly from GE? The DVR usally recognices/formats the drive by itself on the DVR's we have been putting in. In the price range of the systems we are putting in ($4k -$10k) and the amount of systems we install, we don't have time to send a dvr back just to replace a hard drive. I also looked at the Nuvico DVR's and they look pretty good with the usb out etc. I want to find out who makes them origionally.

I was looking at the AVC782, AVC783 and AVC784. I am really looking for the best 4 channel DVR in the $500-$600 range for all the small shops we are doing. Since we are putting them in for around $4000, we don't want to spend $2000 on a DVR. We have put in a bunch of this one: http://www.cctvdealers.com/dvmrseries.htm It works fine but no adjustible recording quality and no pull out HD. Only way to back up is vcr or remote. Thinking of start putting in DVR's with no IP, and just get a separate web server ala' the BlueNet web server, since no DVR really stream video that well, specially if you want to maintain some degree of local recording quality. We are based in Los Angeles, and get equipment from a number of places including ADI, VSSI, Tried, Vitek and Intellicam. We get all the cameras from Mintron's dealer in Canada, Sentry-resellers.com Great cameras, specially the W1 Any feedback would be great PS.Please don't compare to the Kalatel DVR's. Apples and Oranges...

Looked at their website: avtech.com and it looks interesting. I was wondering if you could change the record quality, not just from quad to full but different levels. I saw that that also have a 4 channel with USB out and Mpeg-2. Anyone tried that one. The file size must be alot bigger but also better I would imagine. The 16 channel and one of the 4 channel dvrs are the same one Digimerge claims to make. How do you guys feel about wavelet compared to Mpeg-4 to Mjpeg. Fredrik

Hi TVS's TVS-2066 is working with that cash machine, so i'll just get that one. It's $650 with the cable from ADI. Wonder why they are so expensive. Looked around a little bit and it seems like all the POS interfaces cost around the same. They don't exactly look loke a $650 item. Thanks for your inputs. Fredrik

Rory, Would be interesting to hear some real reasons why you like putting in $3000 4-channel DVR's other than "cheap stuff are crap and you are all idiots who put them in" After reading your posts, I get the feeling that you are more interested in how the units look on the outside and how the remote software look, then how they perform in a real world situation. Most of my customers want a good streaming experiance, and they could care less about a fancy interface that just take extra time to download. As far as the VPON dvr's go, both Westec Interactive and NACC's video monitoring department love them, primarely for their superior streaming capibility and for the simple interface they use. You can however redesign the interface, and upload it via FTP but I take you diden't know that since you, I take, never tried one even if you seem to have such strong opinion about them. I have yet to find a better live demo on the net then the one I have on our website.

I have a demo on our website using a VPON DVR. The all use H.263 compression. Here is the IP: http://209.198.28.250/startp.htm?scrw=1280 The compression is very good which makes them perfect for pre schools, where parents need access with different types of connections. You get 2-3 frames per second on dial-up looking at 1 camera. Much thanks to a very streamlined interface with no fancy PTZ buttons etc. I have been using them as a web server for the pre schools together with a DVR using MPEG-2. Works great. The trick to the VPON is buying the VPON-100, get the motherboard and processor they recomend and put it together your self. Will save you a bunch of money plus it's very simple. The OS is on their plug in card so it's a 30 min thing to put it together and get it up and running. As far as cheap DVR goes, I still would like a better reason why I would spend 5 times as much getting a GE or a Panasonic DVR. Is not much in these DVR's that can break other then the HD regardless which one you get. I am more interested in that the system works than how the unit looks like. The Intellicam support has been great, and the warranty is the same as anywhere else. 2 years on unit, less on the drive. It seems like most DVR's these days have enough features for 99% of the customers out there. I would be interested to hear if someone has any direct experience with the Everfocus DVR's. Just wondering. What exactly make them so "crappy"? I'm curious since some some guys here feel very strongly about the cheap DVR's but are not specifing why. 1. Do they burn hard drives because of ****ty power supplies? 2. Lousy viewing play back quality because of to much/ wrong compression? 3. Not enoght features? Since they all run some form of Linux, thay can't be terrible unstable, play back quality is mostly dependent on what type of compession that is used. We all know that Mpeg-2 has the highest quality but it doesn't stream well because of file size. H.263 and Mpeg-4 streams the best, but look like crap when you blow them up full frame. I can see the power supply/ hard drive argument. Who wants to replace hard drives all the time. Cheers, Fredrik

It's the same dvr as Intellicams. (cctvdealers.com) They sell it for $425 without HD. I have put in a few of them and they work. Here is another possibility Has any one tried the Everfocus DVRs. They have built in flash card reader, IP, audio in, duplex capibility and swappable drives. Comes in 4, 9, and 16 channels. Hi, Some questions re: Mpeg-4 1. How is the quality compared to mjpeg. 2. How is the streaming quality and frame size (2-3k or)?. 3. What driver do you need to acces the camera. Doing alot of daycares with all these parents want to access the cameras. I have been using the DMVR-16 for local recording and a vpon web server for the streaming part since I feel you almost have to have one compression format locally (mpeg) and one for streaming (H.263) for it to work really well.
