One thing you'll want to remember is that it is very different for a port to be open vs. forwarded. Open tends to correspond to a firewall or some other type of device or software to stop requests on a given port. Forwarding refers to telling the router what to do with the request. A port can be open but not forwarded to the DVR. You'll want to make sure you "forward" the correct ports. And, some ISPs don't allow port 80 requests. Sometimes you have to go to 81. Change to port 81 in your DVR software, port forwarding, and you'll have to use :81 on the end of the IP address request you make.

From calculations you need about a 67mm lense.

That's a good point. The user manual does talk about 30fps per channel live and recorded. So I think that means realtime?

You shouldn't have to spend that much 8 Channel with 1 Terabyte drive. I got mine and it is pretty sweet. [edited: admin removed link]

Geovision is a good card, but you really pay for the brand. And, in my opinion, the software is pretty bloated. You could get a 4 camera realtime card for less than $140

You also might want one with a calculator. Enter in the width you need to see and the distance away the camera will be and it will give you the right mm lense to fit. http://www.surveillance-spy-cameras.com/fov-help.htm

I'd say if budget is a concern, DVR cards would be the way to go.

You're going to get what you pay for on DVRs. So $460 dollars for a 4 channel DVR isn't bad at all.
