  1. Hi everyone, My client wants to have cctv installed inside each elevators for their apartment block. What type of cable should be used when installing cameras for elevator? The building is 22 floors high including the lobby. Please help! Thanks in advance...
  2. Hi everyone, We are planning to install cameras along a 15km stretch river. Initially we plan to have one IP camera on a pole at every 1 km along the river. The ip cctv recording server & gigabit network switch will be placed at the end of the 15km stretch, with 15 units of outdoor 3MP IP CCTV. What kind of cabling type and method suit the best for cameras? Fiber optic? What is the best way to run the fibers? Or does wireless solution work? And also the right power solution for the cameras? Would like to get everyone's advise and suggestions on the best reliable solution and robust design. Hope to hear more from everyone... Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi everyone, We've installed two analog cameras in two separate elevators of an apartment block using Belden cat5e with video baluns. The videos were great but after 8 months, one of the camera was having video loss while the other in another elevator is doing fine. We've checked the cables and we suspect the cables must be cracked somewhere causing video loss. Are the cat5e cables strong enough to be used inside the elevator? Is the movement of the elevator caused the cable to crack? Is there any possible cause of the problem? Thanks in advance!
  4. Hi everyone, I've heard that Samsung IP cameras is bundled with free Samsung recording software and CMS software, is this true? I browsed through Samsung software and they have many different software ie. NET-i ware, NET-I viewer & SmartViewer. Has anyone used this software for recording and CMS purpose? Just wondering if you guys have any opinion that you can share with us on this free software that comes with the IP camera. Besides this, what advantage does the free Samsung software has compared to NUUO SCB-IP+ software? Thanks in advance!
  5. Hi everyone, What type of cable should be use for PTZ cameras? Can we use RG59? Thanks!
  6. Hi... I'm a newbie in this field and I hope I'm not asking a stupid question here. What is the RFID frequency for a normal long range reader? I mean is there a standard frequency for all long range reader or it varies with different brand? Thanks in advance!
  7. Soundy, Our technician switched to another pair and it worked! Thank you for your advise.. We asked the local elevator service company on using their spare traveller but were told there wasn't any left for us and if they have they would not let us use it. Maybe that's why nobody in our area had used the traveller. One more question, I've heard of a new product, Qccess laser optical video transmission system which is wireless and it comes with a 3 year warranty. Just wondering anyone here has any experience using this before? How's the video quality? Thanks!
  8. Soundy & tailbone, Thanks for the advise. As you mentioned the cat5e model that we were supposed to use is with stranded core. Can you advise which Belden cat5e comes with stranded core? Thanks again!
  9. There's probably not much that could be said at this point if you are the original installer and ran the cable. The burden and expense is on you to correct the problem in accordance to local code. If you didn't run these cables you need to tell the customer to contact who did and have them correct the problem. The issue is you are now liable if you ran the cables or try to modify what someone else did. Either way, you need to work with the elevator company and eat that expense of them ringing out a pair for you. Probably no justifiable way to pass this cost to the customer as this should have been charged up front in the proposal. Obviously there are ways to get around the problem in a less than professional manor. I'll leave that up to someone else to answer. Tailbone, I don't really understand why should we bear the expense since we did not provide any warranty on cabling works in our proposal earlier. I mean most local installers do not offer warranty on cabling. And the cabling has been done and it's been working since 6 months ago. Do you offer warranty in your area?
  10. Thanks to all your replies. Appreciate it. Can anyone advise how should I explain the cause to my customer who doesn't seem to understand that the cables may break due to constant flexing. They think that cables like Belden should have gone through tensile and bending test during production and the cables shouldn't break. Thanks again.
  11. Hi Soundy, Thanks for your quick response! Yea, I don't think the technician used all the pairs. We could try to use another pair. Thanks again. One more question, we used Belden 1583A Cat5e for this application. Is this model suitable for elevator application?

    Infrared Camera Reflection

Hi everyone, Our customer requested to use enclosure for infrared camera so we supplied and installed them. The problem is when the IR lights turned on, it caused reflections. I think it should be caused by the glass on the enclosure, am I right? Or is there any other reason? Can infrared cameras be installed in enclosures just like the CCD box camera? Thanks in advance!

  14. Hi everyone, Our customer, a 10 floor hotel will be installing over 50 cameras and they do not want to have too many cables running back to the DVR which is located at the basement. We are thinking IP cameras or fiber optic cabling. Can anyone advise which is a better option? Thanks in advance!
  15. Recently we just changed a new battery for a Picasso DVR. When we turned it on afterward, it kept loading and entered into an "AS MODE". No matter what we do, it stayed in that mode with options to format the hdd. My question is do we need to reformat the hdd once we changed the battery for all DVRs? Or is anyone familiar with Picasso DVR? Please help! Thanks in advance!
  16. Hi everyone, Recently we just installed analog dome camera inside the elevator using RG59 coaxial cable & flexible cable. The result wasn't good, there were some noise when the elevator closed its door and start moving. The video looks "grainy" each time the elevator closed its door & start moving. The video quality is good when the elevator is not moving. Why does this happen? Anyway to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
  17. Hi everyone, Which Cat5e is more popular: Belden Cat5e or Siemon Cat5e? Pls tell us why. Thx!

  20. Hi everyone, Our customer wants to have a DVR at their office and they would like to have another slave monitor at their guard post which is about 50ft away. Can we use an LCD monitor meant for computers as the slave monitor? If yes, what type of cable or other accessories should be used? I heard some people use cat5e cable for slave monitor but what if the customer doesn't haev any computer but only an LCD monitor? Or can we use a TV as slave monitor with RG59 to link to the DVR? Thanks in advance!
  21. We're using AVC798A. By the way, where are you from?
  22. Hi, really I cant say as I have not tried AvTech playback with Wine in Linux, only way to know would be to try it. If the main app works though, most likely it will work, as I recall it just shows a copy of the DVR screen and sends controls to the DVR itself, as if you are there playing it back. The download and save video works different on the one I have, but uses the same software. Another alternative is to get Internet Explorer installed under wine, using Wine Tricks for example, then try it inside that. If it uses 100% java though then it should work in Linux without Wine. If it needs activeX then you would copy that to the wine system32 folder and register it using Wine's regsvr32, or create your own installer. Also there are a couple versions of AvTech software so it could differ. Scorpion should be better able to tell you what is what in that regard. Another issue to look at is Whether SUN Java needs to be installed and that could present issues with Wine. Which software version do you have, the Video Server version, E, S, etc? I have an older AvTech here I could test in Ubuntu .. or give me the IP by PM and I could test it from that (using Virtual Box and Ubuntu). If you want to test it yourself without needing a Linux PC, then you could install Virtual Box (free) and download say the Ubuntu ISO and install that into a Virtual Box machine .. download wine inside that and then test away. Although I have found running Wine inside Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine can be very slow, perhaps due to both of them being some kind of emulation. But would depend on your PC, mine is not super fast. Hi Rory, Thanks a lot for your explanation but my client would like to use network cameras now. If we use network cameras, does that mean that we can view the video surveillance through our PCs without having to go through Windows? I've not used network camera before this.
  23. Hi everyone, My client is using Linux instead of Windows based system for their company and they only use Mozilla Firefox. They would like to remotely playback the cctv recordings. We've tried using AVTECH AVC798A but we can only view the videos but could not playback. Is there any other DVR that could playback remotely using Mozilla Firefox? Please help! Thanks...
  24. Hi everyone, We have to lay cctv cables across the street with part of the cable to be buried underground. I was told that we need to use armoured cable. Do we really need armoured cable? Usually we will use RG59 and powercable in PVC conduit piping burried underground. Is this combination able to withstand being buried underground? Why is there a need for armoured cable? Please help... Thanks!
  25. Not as in the drink ... wine is application virtualization, for Linux or Mac (Unix). Please note I am no expert on Linux or Mac, just been working with them lately to try and get things to work for me and a couple clients. Basically this is one way to run Windows programs on a Unix based Operating system - some programs will ofcourse fail to work for one reason or another, mostly due to a missing dependency file (something that is normally installed with Windows but is not included Wine and the user did not add it in themselves), or in the case of video related programs it might have issues due to directX or video card/display driver problems, not native to its Unix Operating system. If it is just a dependency related issue you could find out what those files are and manually copy them to the wine folders. Additionally Wine has its own registry. In the case of Linux you would goto the Software library and search for Wine then install it. Then in some cases you can just run the Windows Program Installer (or even just the EXE) and it may install properly and work great. One example of something that does install and run, probably due to it being a Microsoft product and including all the dependency files, is Microsoft Office 2003. I was even able to create desktop shortcuts with their Icons. It actually worked great on Ubtunu. I created a thread related to this though it is mostly for Mac, which can be a little more difficult with Wine in some cases. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=19615 this is also something for one of my own programs that I got working in Wine: viewtopic.php?p=116003#p116003 There are issues with Wine and Video apps at least in my own experience, though I am no Wine expert .. but it still might be worth a try. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software) Hi Rory, Thank you so much for your help. I will try this out with my client on the AVTECH software. Just wondering can you remotely playback your DVR from a Linux PC after installing wine? This is the most important issue that I need to solve for my client. Thanks again!
