  1. Hi all, First post here and have to say site looks very good. I've read a lot of interesting posts but could do with a bit of help with this one! I've installed an Avtech 4 ch DVR at a customers place and all works good despite the problems of a constantly changing IP address! Lesson learnt about dynamic IP's My next problem, and getting nowhere fast, is - they want to view the DVR using a pay as you go Vodafone broadband dongle but when I try to connect via the Video Viewer software (supplied by Avtech) or Internet Explorer they shut themselves down. I've ensured there are no content restrictions on the dongle but no one seems to know how to sort this. Has anyone any experience of this? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, John.

    DDNS on Avtech DVR

Hello friends, I confess to being a network numpty and been trying to solve this problem for a while now. (have posted on DVR section). I've installed the Avtech h264 4 ch DVR to a friends place. Their IP is changing daily and I've set up an account with Dyndns.com with the update client to deal with this. But I don't think it's working properly. Do I need to tell the router or DVR to do something to inform Dyndns.com when it changes. It's a Huawei echolife 520b router if that's any help. Any help is very much appreciated. Cheers John.

Oldjoe, Pretty sure that's how I set it up, but I will delete the host name and start again just in case. Thanks again. John.

    Remote Viewing

Hi Parushton, I'm having similar problems and it seems remote viewing is a very popular subject! I take it you are having to use a dns company because your IP is not fixed? I've had a similar problem using a 4 ch unit. Login on the same LAN is no problem, and as long as I know the current IP address remote login is good too. However, once the IP changes the dns account does not seem to up date it. I've put a few posts up myself and the kind fellows on here are helping me through it but I'm not there yet. I recon I have not set up the dns account properly and think it's something else I have to enable in the router. With regard to you being able to log onto the DVR but have no video I have exactly that problem when trying to use a mobile broadband connection. I have had the DVR up on the desktop all ok. I've then logged onto the DVR via a mobile broadband connection and got the DVR controls up but no video. I can even control the DVR via the mobile connection and see the changes happen on the desktop but just can't get video. The guys here have suggested trying to use a higher port like 5550 or something but it was having none of it. If I crack it I will celebrate big time and let you all know! In the meantime keep plugging away and let us know of any progress. Sorry for the long winded post Cheers, John.

    DDNS on Avtech DVR

Hi Oldjoe, Thanks for your reply. I have set up the portforwarding and that works ok. When I have been told the current IP I can log on fine. The problem is when the IP address is changed and the domain name does not log on. So I recon it must be something to do with the setting up of the DDNS on either the DVR/router or on the Dyndns.com account. I have read many of the posts here and they're very informative but just can't pin down the DDNS bit The router is a TalkTalk one. My own is a Linksys which does seem much better I have to say. Can anyone advise to try the DNS setting on the Avtech H264 DVR or not touch this and use the router instead? or do I need to set up DDNS in both? Cheers guys John.

Advice on a New Home System

Hi Tom, Read this post and would be interested in viewing the Avermedia DVR. Also, can you let me know the dealer in London. Still persevering the Avtech on the dongle!! Cheers, John.
  12. Guys, Am I missing something here This is driving me nuts. Before I changed any settings on the DVR or the router I could log onto the DVR remotely using ie. The Talk Talk router is a Huawei echolife HG520b and in the NAT section under 'Virtual Server' you can change the start/finish port values. There are four in total which I presume (always a bad move I know) are for 2 incoming and 2 local? I tried 5550 in all four and changed the DVR port to 5550 aswell but could not log on remotely. Still can't log on. Can anyone far cleverer than me tell me where I'm going wrong? Cheers Jonno.
  13. Ok Neutech, your points are noted, thanks for your interest. Certainly on a fast learning curve here! I'll have a look at the Digiguard equipment. Cheers, John.
  14. Thanks Rory, I hope to get back to site later this week so will have a better idea if I'm making progress For the money the Avtechs seem ok but I guess you get what you pay for and they seem pretty good value. What would be the nearest comparison for you? Cheers, John.
  15. That's great Tom, thanks for that. I'll post up some feed back when I'm done. John.
  16. Forgot to mention, DVR is connected to a Talk Talk router but this appears to be working ok. Probably a silly question but I take it I should also change the ports on the port forwarding of the router to 5550? Cheers John. ps. Rory, if you ever need a lad (well at heart anyway) to carry your tools I'm your man!
  17. Hi rory. i come across this problem alot with customers. like jonno. going from pc to pc or pc to dvr with port 80 is fine. but mobile devices like smartphones or 3g data cards will not connect to anything with port 80 it just shuts ie down. by changing from port 80 on the dvr gets around this problem and going to ports around 5550 is ideal for mobile devices Hi Tom & Rory & thanks for your replies. Yeah Tom I'm UK based but in South London. For information purposes this is what actually happens: 1) log onto ie or Avtechs own software. 2) Enter the IP address. 3) If on ie accept the Active X add on. (not rqd with viewer software) 4) Windows message then appears saying ie has stopped working. This happens on both windows & vista. I'll try changing the port to 5550 as you recommend and give it a go, but does this effect login via normal internet? I'll let you know how I get on. All the best & thanks again John.
