You first need to open the DVR ports in your router: try thishttp://screenshots.portforward.com/Netgear/VMDG280/Port_Forwarding.htm Follow the internet set up closely in the nelly's link above; for a free dynamic DNS account try no-ip since dyndns is cutting back free services. If your router does not recognize no-ip you will have to either use their update client (with a computer always on) or update you IP manually. Then you input the dns domain you created into PSS or IE. When using the IE version of the DVR software enter a colon followed by the web port number. I use 8080 since 80 is sometimes blocked.

You did not say if you have the Cat5 cable connected to the router from the DVR. With my Qvis Zeus I plugged it in to the router, entered the IP (usually 192.168.1.108) and use the native IE program.

Why not get a quad processor? I have 4 CNB VBM 24 VF cameras installed but they do not have IR. If you need IR check out KT&C's line up of 700 TVL IR bullet cams. If you have power in the barn you can get away with one Cat5 (with Baluns) run from the house. Pick up a central power supply for the cameras and you should be good.

I have had Cat 5 from DVR to computer running up the side of my 2 story home for about 4 years now. It has been exposed to the four seasons here and full afternoon sun in summer. No problems with connection. But I have always wondered if I should switch to outdoor rated.

I'm a rookie as well and have installed systems in about 4 older homes...all 2 story. After trying a wire run once up the inside of a wall I failed, hitting floor boards and what not. I ended up running conduit up the outside corners of the home and mounting verifocal domes about 8 feet up from the foundation. Then some paint on the PVC conduit and it does not look that bad. DVR is in the basement and all wires either enter that area together or enter at different points closer to the cameras.

Gotta say that I like being able to remove the pin, attach it to the conductor and insert into the connector. I know the pin is making positive contact and I am able to see when to stop pushing the wire without making a mark.

I was gettkng a disk full error on my 1TB 4 ch Zeus, seems it started after the first overwrite yet it kept recording. I received a firmware update from the seller dated April, 2011. That was late December and, although I am waiting for it to overwrite again, there has been no disk errors.

After just beginning to install camera systems I too used to look for all in one packages and found a better bargain, for quality and price, going with different websites. Don't get me wrong, I am not a pro by any stretch...just a guy who helps out friends/family and the occasional customer. But I learned a lot about all aspects of installation on this forum, some of which I would have never known. One dealer has a great price on good DVRs while their cable and/or cameras are not as good; Very rarely do I find everything all in one. I have also used surveillance-video's web site for the CNB's and never had a problem; they always had good prices on those cameras but I am not crazy about their power sources. Others have complained about that company in general. Camera systems are kinda like a neighborhood without a large supermarket: awesome bread at the bakery, fine meats at the butcher and the best produce at the corner stand.

And then there is all the free downloads from Rory (the Dahua Santa Claus) like single view, portable, and a buch of others that make remote viewing fun and easy. Pss and the IE software are great but Rory's stuff enhanses the experience

the 4 channel Zeus I have can record up to 30 FPS on channel 1 and 7 on the rest regardless of motion from each camera. So, its limited to that per channel. I just created an AVI file of footage from my home today at 7 FPS and it is more than enough for evidence. I am almost certain they are SATA. Sorry but I don't think I am allowed to post websites.

Why not go for the Qvis Apollo (a Dahua DVR), or Zeus since HDMI is not a concern, 8 channel DVR? I am thinking 1 TB will give you at least 2 weeks using D1 on all channels. It also seems like vandal-proof varifocal domes like CNB VCM 24VF (since lighting is decent) or KT&C 700 TVL domes may be better especially if people have taken a swipe at them in the past. And I have never really had good luck getting license plates unless the lens is zoomed in (using the CNBs), but then I loose field of view. You say the cameras will run 24/7...do you mean record? If so motion detection recording from the dvr might be the way to go For cameras 2 and 5 it seems domes would be better under the flat roof if possible. Since you did not mention it do you have the cable, connectors and power source?

Every week is like Christmas when Rory brings the Dahua gifts. I used the 2.08 ActiveX and it worked like a charm. Regarding the Custom Web Service, I was able to view the configuration and download the OCX in both Firefox (using IE Tab) and IE but keep getting "Failed to Connect Driver in Main Connection".

I don't see what difference it would make. Having the 18/2 wire from the power pack's terminals to the supplied connector on the CNB is the same thing as your proposal just easier because there is one less step. I have installed a bunch of the VCMs and VBMs using 18/2 directly from a power source (both wall plug and power supply box) and never had a problem.

Rory, will you be getting these soon to try? I too am interested in this camera for a job coming up.

What firmware is on your DVR? Dahua says IE9 needs the activeX from 2.608? I dont have IE9 to confirm this and want to update my webpage about this. Thanks. My DVR version is 2.606.0024.0. Build is April 7, 2011

My 16 CH DVR at work only goes as high as 3 FPS on D1 for each channel and it has been more than enough to get convictions in a former drug prone high crime area. My home DVR, records D1 7 FPS on 3 of its channels and 30 on one. I too was once concerned about not having 30 FPS on all channels but it is not worth the additional hard drive space given the main purpose of surveillance recording. You might want to check out the Dahua (Qvis) line.

I am using IE Tab 2; version 3.10.7.2 in Firefox 9.0.1 for my Qvis Zeus and all works well for getting the DVR over the network

This may be an easy one to answer: I will be working on a job where the DVR will be located in another building about 300 feet away from the cameras (using CNB monalisas). One outdoor rated Cat 5 has already been run from the DVR location to the building where the 4 cameras will mount outside. Having never used baluns should I go with a Quad Video Balun and run RG 59 from that to the cameras then crimp an RJ 45 at both ends of the Cat 5? Or should I use individual baluns? If I use the RG 59 Siamese I will have the 18/2 for power (planning on using a 4 channel altronix for the cams) Each camera will be somewhere between 20 and 50 feet from the other so I am not sure how I would separate the Cat 5 out to each camera if using individual baluns.

Thanks Soundy, I was hoping you'd chime in especially after I read your posts from the past on Baluns. In your first example ("run a Cat5 from each camera to the common point, then connect the video pair from each camera to another pair on the homerun") I would use individual Baluns at each camera connected to 4 separate Cat 5 (use a different pair at each camera)then use something like a beanie connector and match up the pairs from the cameras to the home run Cat 5? Whatever pairs, from the cams, I am not using can then be used for power right? I would then use the other 4 Baluns at the DVR and connect each pair to each Balun right?

I am looking for a basic $100 or less door alarm for my home; something simple like a keypad and sensor with an alarm to scare off intruders. I'd like to stay away from wired. It is basically to add peace of mind for my parents. Problem is there is way too many selections out there and I am not familiar enough with the systems to know the difference. I can install cameras no problem but I'm not up to speed with alarms.
