  1. It may be a few days until they get back to you as it's a holiday in China but I'm sure they will. They were pretty response when I had issues.

    Dahua firmware

It depends on you firmware release and camera. They changed the string in their newer firmware. I have the string, but not with me now, maybe Sunday if I remember or someone reminds me.
  3. It does work with the new version, spent months of nagging Dahua until they told me the secret, unfortunately, it's a secret that may have to wait until I get home on Sunday as I have the new string at home on my desktop. I was just playing with it yesterday. Was trying to figure out how to put it in an IMG tag, but wouldn't display. I've done this before, but I have to look back through one of my websites where I did this with a different camera.
  4. Specially if it's used and you don't know the password as I believe to get a password reset, besides maybe paying 200 euro, you have prove ownership.
  5. Yes, you'll need a PoE injector or switch, SD card if you want to store on the card, but you can have it write to a NAS if you want. But you will need at least one (takes 2) sensor/lens, this is what they look like - https://www.mobotix.com/other/Products/Cameras/M12-DevKit/M12-DevKit-Board They come in day only color 3MP and night only B&W 1.2MP. So you need both if you want day/night capability.

    POE - Which Switch?

Keep us posted. There's so much noise around me I didn't even notice until I powered it off about a week ago and it is sort of loud for such a small thing.

    POE - Which Switch?

Sounds like a plan. Also, I have the 8 port version and it's fanless. Does it just plug in with a standard connector. Found this searching Amazon, 40mm x 20mm, cheap, 12db, 5.5cfm http://www.amazon.com/Sunon-HA40201V4-VGA-Cooling-speed-Sensor/dp/B009QX64T8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1379640778&sr=8-6&keywords=fan+40mm+x+20mm

    hikvision lens options

It theoretically possible, but not probable. There's so many things to consider that it's a science experiment. If the lens is too long, clearly it won't fit behind the glass, if it's too short it will have crazy IR light bleed. Then say you find one that is the same exact length, but that doesn't mean it will sit in the correct spot as you have to screw the lens in until it's in focus, so it may be off by 1/8" and not work. Also, you do know the lens is glued in place, so that's a risk too. Then say it all fits, you may have lens quality issues, it may interfere with the ir cut filter operation. Just order the camera with the lens you want, either re-purpose the camera you have for something else or sell it used on eBay. Seriously, you'll save yourself lots of aggravation. I love my 12mm, so much so I'm ordering 2 more. Perfect for narrow side yards which is where I'm putting one for sure.

    Dahua firmware

There's two alternatives to consider. One is to use the URL command that displays the current image from the camera, I believe this can be included in the img tag on your page. The other is to setup a streaming server app on your PC and provide live streaming video.
  10. Also, different vendors focal length claims vary. So for example, I have a Dahua 12mm 3MP and a Hikvision 12mm 3MP and they are as much as 30% different from each other. So a 20X zoom, even if it's the same focal length will give you different results.

    Dahua firmware

Unless the latest version of firmware which I have not tried changed anything, you can only trigger an FTP via a video motion detect or on the higher end cameras, alarm input. It can not be scheduled to FTP by time. By chance, is this to put an image on a website?
  12. Here's what I use and works for me. I have an Axis M10 series, uses PIR for motion detection, sends me an email with as many pictures as I want spread out how I want them, for me, that's 4 pictures in 2 seconds. Faces the front door, anyone comes in, including me, I have their picture. Axis can also be set to FTP images (not video) and I used to use that to FTP an image every hour to a website with a fixed name (you can have a variable name too). This has been working well for a few years. Prices vary from below your budget to above your budget depending on resolution and features. The only downside is how long it takes to capture the emails, compose the email, send it and wait for my smartphone to pickup emails. So it could be several minutes from the event until you get notified, by then, Elvis could have left the building. The other solution I have that I like even better is my AVTech cameras like my AV80X and AVN812 (AVN813 is same with SD card slot). It has push video where it alerts my iPhone or Android phone with chirps within seconds of the detection. Selecting the alert automatically starts playing the video from the last event so you can see what or who triggered it. You can also play video recorded to SD or live video right from your smartphone. Also has 2 way audio. It also uses PIR for motion detect, maybe 1 false alarm in 2 years I had this. The clarity in low light is very good, better than the Axis. It does email and ftp, but have not set that up since I'm happy with the smartphone/tablet capabilities for what I need it for which is as my alarm (saves me an alarm monitoring fee).
  13. Is Mobotix going downhill or is it me? I opened a support case 2 weeks, never heard back, opened one up a few days ago, never heard back, emailed their main office this morning, never heard back. They are based in Wall St. and I had better luck getting through to them during Sandy than I do know. I get better support response from Dahua, OK, maybe not that bad, but close. UPDATE: Their support email box is full. Contacted the country manager that asked me to use a different email.

    Mobotix Support???

After working with the country manager, they finally got back to me, 3 weeks after opening a ticket. By then I already fixed it myself and going to their forum and getting help from non-Mobotix people. So Dahua and Mobotix are now tied for taking the longest to get back to me, LOL. For this one project, the decentralized approach helps out a lot and you are correct, they were miles ahead in 2009 with clear sharp 3MP images and very good low light sensitivity for it's day. I reserving judgment on advancements for when the D15s are installed, just waiting for trenching and cabling. They claim 4x better low light sensitivity. They did have two fairly recent innovations though. The S14/15 is a very cool design for high end homes/business that want discretion without compromising quality. Also, the 15 series has the option of thermal. Also they've come out with recent doorbell cams for the high end, not sure anyone else sells a higher end doorbell cam.

    Milestone X-Protect Go

For the Dahua and Hikvision, it detects them as ONVIF and motion detection is done by the XProtect software. This does not materially impact CPU use. Currently I have 7 cameras (8th was moved, but will replaced soon), 4 are ACTi and use in camera motion detect, 2 are 3MP and 2 are older 1.3MP. 3 are Dahua and use XProtect motion detection, 1 3MP, 1 2MP, 1 1.3MP. I was using a Hikvision 3MP 12mm bullet for a few weeks with XProtect, but I moved it to our weekend home and I ordered a replacement, but my daughter sold them out from under me, LOL, so I'll get those on the next shipment.

    Milestone X-Protect Go

Actually, Voipninja is to blame, he got me hooked on XProtect as we took similar paths to get here. So I started with BlueIris a few years ago worked well but was a CPU hog so as I added more cameras and more megapixels, it became less feasible to run without a large hardware investment. So I switched every camera to ACTi so I can use ACTi NVR software, much better, can run as many cameras as I need to on my slow Atom processor PC at the time. Did a lot more than BlueIris with multi-camera playback and complete remote web access, two things lacking in BI that I felt I needed. Then I wanted other brands of cameras, Dahua, Hikvision, Axis, AVTech, so I started to use Synology Surveillance Station. Full web interface, multi-camera playback, fancy search options but it was sluggish. Someday I'll sell the licenses since I don't use it anymore or maybe use it at our weekend home. I've tried Exacq and Nuuo before this, OK, but had limitations with supported camera models. Also, I travel with a MacBook Air that replaced my iPad so I wanted access natively from Safari with no ties to Windows or IE. I got the 30 day trial to Essentials, put 8 cameras on it and it's been working well all around for me for about 3 months. I have to do a review, just been busy. It has a good Android app, so from my bed side, if I hear a noise, I tap on the Milestone icon on my tablet and pretty quickly see what's going on or even look at recent recordings. The web interface works with my MacBook, so good to check up on things while on the road from there. So what's wrong with XProtect, it's a bear to install and configure. You have to start by installing the product and download and install the latest "device pack". Then I had to manually configure each camera through their wizard and then go back and tweak settings to get it the way I want. Then you have to setup the mobile server to get web and smartphone access. There's a lot more knobs to tweak than any other software I tried, but once you have it setup, it runs very well. CPU on a first generation i3 computer is pretty low, maybe 10-15% as a server. When using the smartphone client, it shoots up to 90%, don't know why because when I use the web interface or smart client it does not go up much if at all. So why not Avigilon, I believe Voipninja hit many of the same hurdles, first, I can't even get the regional sales rep to return my calls, second, I hear it's not Mac friendly and third Core costs substantially more than Essential and lastly, Essential allows 5 clients to connect, Core only 2. Since I switched - BlueIris has improved their CPU use, still high, but much better with direct to disc recording. Also, promises of multi-camera playback have been made. ACTi NVR3 now supports a few brands of cameras outside of ACTi. They plan on adding support for more brands and ONVIF in the very near future. I really like it, but has a dependency on IE and Windows. Also they only have an IOS app, no Android yet. Not to the level of XProtect, but easier to use and install and a full web based client.

    Dahua firmware

Won't it do motion detection in the software. This is how I do it with other products like Milestone, Synology, BlueIris...
  18. The Hikvision domes are a good value and have a nice wide field of view and 3MP is decent resolution. I've seen them as low as $179 each. To save money, if you have a spare PC, you can run Milestone XProtect Go for free for up to 8 cameras. The ACTi domes are better in my opinion, 3-axis, have SD card slots and run about $259. ACTi NVR software is quite good and is free for 16 cameras. Don't follow exchange rates in Canada, but I'm sure prices there are comparable.

    Milestone X-Protect Go

Yes, but I can run the stats for comparison. What city do you reside? 43% off all statistics are made up. See, just made that up. Maybe Pleasanton does not report crimes to keep stats low. I know my city is hesitant in logging crimes and I had to ask our police chief why a certain crime in my neighborhood was not logged. So I would bet my city is safer stats wise, but not necessarily in reality.
  20. Chinese version displays the day of week in Chinese but it can be turned off to display date and time only. Other than that, same camera, all made in China. The biggest difference is price.

    iPhone 5s and 5c

They still had a bunch of legacy iPhone 5 at the Apple store. I was looking at eBay used pricing of the difference between the 4 and 4s and there's nearly a $100 difference which confirms that I should get the 5s, so in 2 years when I'm up for renewal and the 7s is out, I can sell the old 5s to fund the 7s. For me, the 5s is mostly to be used an iPod as my main phone is the Galaxy S4.
