Hello I work for manufacture of thermal and other specialized optics called Infiniti Electro Optics. I wanted to ask security integrators a few questions as I am trying to see how much the average high end integrator knows about thermal imaging and its applications. I have a couple of questions. 1) Do you use thermal infrared 2) IF yes for what applications if no please share why? 3) Do you know how thermal is rated (DRI Johnson criteria) ? 4) What is your current night vision technology you use when you need over 300 feet of night vision.? 5) What Brand do you use and why? 6) Would you like to learn more on thermal imaging and its applications for security and surveillance. If you could share your information that would be great my company is now making military technology available to integrators around the world and would like to know if I need to first educate integrators or if integrators are ready. Thanks a lot for any participation or answers given. Best Regards, Tim

Long Distance Long Range High Resolution Day/Night Camera
IRCCTV replied to grandquads's topic in Security Cameras
For not having the camera see at night you simply use 940nm which will show no glow and 840nm or standard IR illumination is invisible just simply there is a red glow at its source which when you are looking 300 feet away not a big deal especially for those on a budget. when people say that don't want the IR to be seen they are talking about with the human eye. IF he wants a system that cant be seen with NVD, Scopes, modified DSLR and other imaging equipment than yes course he would have to use a passive technology like thermal but thermal is quite expensive and would only allow him to detect targets not actually see them. Pretty sure he means not able be viewed with the naked eye not a completely passive system he is not a sniper in hostile territory just someone trying to protect his property with a camera that provides good value. IF he has an unlimited budget I have a PTZ with 1150mm zoom lens that is cooled HD thermal that will detect targets over 50km and a 5500mm HD optical camera that provides a 10m FOV at 12.5km which will give you actual human identification at 5km on good conditions or use a SWIR if he want to see through fog and smoke. But I was attempting to offer a solution based on his needs, budgets and the application. Also border control uses a variety of systems and its not just thermal they use active, radar and cooled and uncooled thermal and visible. Seeing as how I design systems for border, coastal protection, critical infrastructure, etc, and my primary end users are the US military and navy pretty sure I have a good handle on electro-optics especially as it relates to night vision. Radar detects, Optics provide the recognition and identification, thermal is used when night vision distance over 3-5km is needed. The best solutions for under $1,000 would be as I suggested the AP-550 clean night vision at 300 feet with 940nm (invisible to human eye and no red glow present) for around $650. Even a cheap 640x480 resolution will cost at least $6,500 and wont have good GE optic and will only detect the target not actually see it. Also thermal sensors are larger then optical cameras and have less resolution so the distance and detail they provide is much less so a 50mm lens on a thermal will not give as much detail or zoom power as a 1/2 or 1/3 analogue camera with the same size lens not to mention most thermal resolution is only 320x240 no to mention over 10X the cost and closer to 15~20x. Thermal is great for detecting targets but if you don't have the ability to verify or classify a threat that my friend is a false alarm so you want to use visible cameras with thermal to have a proper solution. After all what is the point of knowing there is a potential threat if you are unable to verify it to me that is no better then having a PIR detector with no camera. At 400 feet thermal you wont be able to tell if it is an animal or person. If you like I have made some white papers on thermal and on DRI Johnson Criteria which is how thermal is rated I would be happy to share them with you. -
Long Distance Long Range High Resolution Day/Night Camera

This would be a very bad application for thermal. Thermal is good if you want to detect targets at 500m out but they don't provide any detail. You want to use thermal cameras with optical cameras with IR illumination the thermal provides a wide angle situational awareness and the optical provides identification levle of performance. Furthermore CNB does not make thermal cameras they make infrared illumination that is very different than thermal. Please do not give suggestions when you don't know what you are talking about. That is like giving someone directions when you don't know the way its not helpful. -

Well IR distance totally depends on the Camera, Lens, and the illumination source, and the resolution. Active IR can range from 800nm up to 1550nm for illumination. Active Ir you can get ranges from 5m up to 10km but I prefer to only use active Ir up to 3km becasue afer that you lose the ability to identify targets in which case thermal imaging should be used. The company I work for deigns Active IR and passive thermal systems for extreme long range imaging for boarder protection, perimeter defense, and Aeriel surveillance. demo videos: http://www.ascendentgroup.com/zlid.htm Advantages Over Thermal Imaging Active IR imaging has significant advantages over thermal imaging by producing images with up to 500% higher resolution. Thermal imaging Unlike optical systems, which like the human eye requires light, thermal imaging uses infrared electromagnetic radiation 900-14,000 nm wavelengths (heat) to produce images. All objects that are above -213C emit infrared radiation, the amount of radiation emitted is proportional to the temperature of the objects and thermal imaging detects these minute temperature variations and thus accurately reproduces the scene. Since all objects emit infrared radiation a thermal imager is able to "see" the environment regardless of lighting conditions. Ascendnt offer thermal imagers with up to 1280 HD resolution with lens up to 1000mm (up to 2000mm by the end of 2013) for up to 50km of detection. does anyone know someone who stocks or has at least 3 of the C22X23R2D-V41 Best Regards

Thats becasue you don't use a good analog DVR. Show them a 600TVL camera with D1 image compression (they will not be so quick to change) As I have done this at trade shows with seasoned professionals not end users and they will 85% of the time opt for analog over IP MP. Again show them a 600TVL camera at d resolution recorded on a hardware compressed DVR and you will notice very little difference between that and a 2MP camera. But like most people who tout IP im sure you are comparing 2005 analog to 2010 IP technology. If you have an entrance with perfect lighting and a dedicated network then MP is a great solution. MP cameras are based on CMOS rather then CCD which have a number of disadvantages compared to CCD, such as low light, noise and have poorer color reduction (though they are smaller and cheaper making them most widely used) CMOS is used in cellphones CCD is used by NASA and high end medical applications as the amount of noise produced by CMOS. Yes MP is the future but it an immature technology that is not fully developed and should be used in specific applications not main stream, give it 4 years and will be good. Im not arguing its not the future im saying its not the present. Just so you know MP cameras represent less then 2% of the total market due to price to performance. so to make the case IP has advantages over analog camera based on MP cameras is ridiculous. MP cameras also offer very poor remote connection and are very expensive when it comes to storage and most applications I sell to want at least 3 months of storage not to mention networks need to be upgraded pr replaced to accommodate multiple MP cameras. IP has a larger file size and lower image quality when recorded at the same resolution not to mention the lag and latency. Since this topic is about remote connectivity and PTZ control it does not make sense to do IP as it will cost more and give lower performance due to the lag and latency that is inherit on IP based systems. An im not even mentioning the reliability and cost factor.

Yes of course you can control a PTZ camera over the internet with both analog with a DVR or an IP camera. Why do you want to use IP since you need PTZ control ? Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements of DVR's this simply isn't true, with our X3 DVR you can monitor up to 16,000 cameras using our Central management Suite each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site. ANALOG camera are just as expandable as IP (add endlessly in modules of 4, 16,32 up to 64,) As for implementation im afraid analog is still quicker plug and play as opposed to networks unless you happen to have a fiber optic backbone. And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effectively control PTZ cameras, which can be be done with IP but due to its amount of lag and latency on a LAN let alone a WAN connection IP is often not used with PTZ cameras. IP is also far more difficult (and expensive) to maintain then analog camera because IP uses at network then cabling that is just plug and play. no to mention when a problem happens on a network it is very hard to isolate the problem as one hub can take out 50 cameras where with analog all failures are isolated to that specific camera (unless its the DVR which have lower failure rate then NVR's). Since the advent of Baluns you can now send video and data up to a mile over a standard cat 5 cable where the standard POE is about 330 feet. Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. Note: if you are not using a good DVR then IP cameras will offer better performance by above writeup is based on using a good DVR. I am curious as to why people think that IP has so many advantages over analog, it seems when comparing analog and IP people take IP from 2010 and compare it to Analog technology in 2005. Here is a link to an analog DVR with a PTZ camera Camera 1 is a PTZ camera and you can take control the PTZ, this DVR is located in a remote rural city the internet is brought in by microwave and is slower then most 3G in cities, yet it will offer superior control land transmitter then any IP camera on a T3 connection. Ascendent has a live demo of a PTZ camera Open IE not Firefox (unless you run IE from Firefox) 1) http://24.66.0.207/ (in address bar) 2) download active X controls 3) Hit connect (right hand corner) 4) DVR type (PC DVR) 5) Site-100 6) Username: Demo (case sensitive) 7) Password demo (lower case) Hit extend config 9) Site-IP 24.66.0.207 10) Data port 7000 11) Stream Port: 8000 You will not find any IP camera that will allow you to stream images and control a PTZ camera as well as this "outdated" analog DVR and camera. http://www.ascendentgroup.com/

Do wireless IP cameras actually work?!? I DONT THINK SO!
IRCCTV replied to billeh's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I have been talking to alot of dealers, distributors and integrators lately regarding IP Vs analog. The conversation usually starts of like This, Im looking for some IP cameras. I say Ok why do you want IP? After they explain to me there requirements about 90% of the time I quote them an analog system ( I do an IP option as well but since analog is cheaper, lower cost and offers better performance they usually opt for analog quote) IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike universal analog you can use any camera on any DVR and they can have other companies develop software for the allowing them to get into niche markets without having to developing new product lines. Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldn’t want that unfortunate;y this is often not the case. IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP. IP cameras are based on CMOS Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually) CCD image sensors contain hundreds of thousands picture elements, called pixels. Each pixel contains a light sensitive element and a capacitor. A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCD’s CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually This mean CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word. In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera. CMOS unless it implements progressive scan technology does not handle motion well you get dithering and streaking similar to mpeg4 when there is high amounts of motion. File Size File size is crucial whether its for remote viewing, storage or transmissions because most DVR’s on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way to much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections. The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR. IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size. This is because mot IP cameras especially economical ones or 3MP+ uses old outdated compression technology such as J-peg and Mpeg 4 rather then H.264. This means that if you want to do over 9 IP cameras most existing infrastructures simply wont do the job and can even bog down the network to point that it affects other devices such as POS, storage and other peripherals located on the network. So like analog you often ether have to put in new cabling infrastructure for the IP cameras or completely overhaul there existing one which is often more expensive then doing analog cameras using baluns and cat 5 cabling (not to mention lower cost of ownership and higher reliability as a $40 router or switch cant take down 20k worth of cameras). Image quality We have all seen those flashy brochures showing how much better mega pixel cameras are then “traditional” analog technology (arecont and moboliX) But often times they are using CIF resolution on a 380TVL camera. which does not give a good representation of what analog has to offer. I would like them to show a chart of file size and cost to store and stream the images. (Arecont and mobolix do make good MP IP cameras but there marketing far exceeds there performance) But If you compare a good D1 resolution image and compare it with a 2MP you will very little deliverance any many times I have had people who choose the D1 using out 550TVL camera due to its better color reproduction and its ability to handle changing ambient lighting conditions. Don’t get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Airships or ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon. IP does have applications and in some cases IP cameras are the only way to do a project but I would estimate that for 90% of applications analog is cheaper offers higher performance with a lower cost of ownership and higher reliability. IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license fees’ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go. Unless you are using a 5MP+ and have a fiber optic backbone or just need one camera it is almost always better to go analog over IP video. Ascendent is working on a 9 page white paper regarding analog and IP video but I suggest you get quality brand names for both and test them for yourself. I personally suggest using Hybrid DVR’s and baluns in then you can use the Cat 5 for a network (just change the ends) and use the hybrid for the recording that way they can get a good system and have the ability to upgrade in the future using the same infrastructure. another great way of gettign good performance on an IP infrastructure is the Use of IP video server I suggest using ones with internal HDD so if network goes down or a 40$ network hub fails you still have high quality high frame rate stored video. MEGAPIXEL CAMERA SYSTEM FORSALE!!!!! thewireguys: of course you disagree I Sell both analog and MP cameras and can tell that in high end applications (Boarder defense, critical infrastructure protection, ect,) we don't use IP due the reliability, lag, latency and performance. its a new and unstable technology that has a few application but fact is MP cameras represent less then 2% of the market. Disadvantages of IP IP have lag an latency Fail more often (due to networks) More expensive to maintain and operate poorer remote connection (compared to analog+ DVR) Advantages of IP Where MP is needed Large wireless applications And 1 or 2 camera installs -
Hello GVS1000 used to be the best long range camera available was made by Extreme CCTV. The GVS1000 is now a 5 year old product and uses outdated LED technology. By using Laser technology that unlike traditional IR LED's give both distance and wide angle illumination to offer active IR performance up to 10km and up to with 17 degrees of illumination. Not only does Ascnedent's ZLID offer superior illumination, and greater distance but also has an IR lifetime of 10,000 hours (up to 5x the leading competitor) making it the clear choice for military and homeland security. I wouldn't go as far as to say there is a tunneling affect. (its possible if you used a 1/2 camera with a 1/3 lens.) But If im not mistaken the bigger the CCD the more that is in focus in a given image. for instance a 1/2CCD camera on a 2000m lens will see the same as a 1500mm lens on a 1/3CCD (for field of view) But there is more in focus using the 1/2 CCD thus rendering a better image. There FOV is the same but the 1/2 is much clearer image around the edges then the 1/3. So I would say a 1/2 will give you clearer images then a 1/3 though it will give you less distance and probably cost more. Though 1/2 is usually used becasue they allow more light in. For mid range zoom we use 260mm on a 1/4 CCD For long range zoom day time we use 1500mm on a 1/3 CCD For Long range Active IR we use 1500mm or 2200mm on a 1/2. Its hard to notice using smaller focal lengths but the difference is much more noticeable on bigger lens's like 2000mm and 1500mm. If all CCD's performed the same they would all be 1/4 as this would reduce the size, cost, and improve the distance. There are performance difference between 1/4 1/3 and 1/2 though there mot always as noticeable as the price. Its also very hard to compare becasue often the lens's (quality, light transmittance, manufacture process) and CCD (resolution, firmware, TVL S/n) are different so its almost impossible to compare them and to determine the affect CCD size makes.

If you are looking for imaging at long ranges I would suggest Ascendent Technology Group Here is a comparison of Bosch (Extreme CCTV) GVS1000 and Ascendents Simga GVS-1000 25-1500mm lens (with 2X) 1.2 km max using 4 IR illuminators (ZX700 only 2000 hours ) Expensive to operate 1/2 CCD Pan Range ± 215º Tilt Range ± 90º Pan Speed 0.3º to 8º per second Tilt Speed 0.1º to 4.5º per second Repeatability 0.25º Ascendent Sigma Series If you need a PDF send me a PM 25-1500mm lens (with 2X) optional 20-2000mm with 2x IR corrected 3,3 km max using 1 laser illuminator (ASC-3000LIR MTFB 10,000 hours ) 500% longer life time 1/2 CCD Drive Unit Integral pan / tilt brushless motor drive micro step, pan and tilt Pan angle and speed 360° continuous pan | Variable speed: up to 90º Tilt angle and speed up to 75° | Variable speed: 0.1º to 90º per second Speed Control Closed loop electronics Preset Accuracy Better than 0.1° Proportional P/T to Zoom position Yes: Automatically adjusts speed with zoom for accurate pan tilt zoom Ascedent also has a Terra series which can see up to 8km at night using 2 lase active IR illumiantors. Ascendent offers complete customization so if you are interested in this camera for just day time I would suggest asking them to build you one with a 1/3 CCD rather then a 1/2 and and ask them to not include the illumiantors that will give you longer range using the same lens. They can also integrate video analytics for automatic tracking and build a system using FLIR or cantronics thermal imagers. http://www.ascendentgroup.com/ http://www.ascendentgroup.com/

• Samsung Techwin vs Samsung Electronics (FACTS ONLY!)
IRCCTV replied to mcs's topic in Security Cameras
Samsung Techwin does not build all there own products, we get are cameras made by the same factory as Samsungtehcwin uses main diferance is price and advertising. Bu Samsung Tehcwin does make good products I was impressed with there 32CH standalone D1 DVR (Great for a standalone) -

A standard PTZ will not cut it this is specially designed to track object going at fast as 1000m per second like a missile. Also its not for going on jets its for tracking them and a system for airports to asses and capture landing and take off for military jets or commercial plains. -
"Halo" image in night time pictures (dome IR)
IRCCTV replied to ronhithcox's topic in General Analog CCTV Discussion
ZMX hit it dead on the camera is not designed properly a good IR camera will have something separate the IR and the lens so this problem does not occur. Also it could be the the IR LED is to big for the dome and when you installed or adjusted the camera you adjusted the IR so that some of them are reflecting back into the dome. This usually happens when you install a camera on a wall without using a proper wall mount. But it is most likely not a well designed IR camera. -
Bosch and pelco make good PTZ but they are overpriced they use the same Sony module and pan tilt is good but not the best they both use bush-less motor technology which is good but not as accurate as gearbox. I have found Honeywell module the best for low light but have not tested honeywells new 35X module yet. If you send me a pm ill send a demo site that has a fairly good low light ptz. How low light do you need ?

AVTECH DVR - Hard Drive Overwrite Mode
IRCCTV replied to bfaridnia's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Replace the HDD And you will be fine if you had a power outage recently format the drive as it may have corrupted video. But otherwise your HDD is bad. -
http://www.floatograph.com/ interested mobile power systems. Also I would recommend contacting an engineer company that specializes in design solar systems The company I work with in Canada takes assessment of the location and there average amount of sun. Then designed a system customized for that location and for your requirements. I know a mobile PC based DVR that only draws 60W and can stream over cellar and satellite. (file size .05kb) or can be built with a 12CH hybrid DVR Do the housings have heater or need heater because to save on power you may want a housing that does not require a heater to save on power.
