    Holy Geovision High Definition Inquisition!

Yea, the cards are limited to 720x480 D1 resolution (NTSC system). But you can certainly go buy an IP camera (megapixel if wanted), that will put out resolutions at 1080p and beyond!

Reliability of HDD vs Solid State

Maybe look at the MTBF numbers between Enterprise and SSD? I'd bet Enterprise would be fine.

Harmonic Interference What can I do?

Yea, that will do it. Ground the conduit!! It is totally possible for the EMF put out by big electric motors like those in compressors to distort you cameras. I would first try to keep the compressor farther away from the camera+video cable, and keep the cable away from power wires (only cross them at 90 degree angles).

    quality of dome security cameras

EXACTLY what I am thinking. The ones I've installed (6) just don't do this... Even at the minute just before switching, the color image is fine. There is no color "fuzzies" in recordings. I think your cameras may be partially defunct...?

    More Storms on the way

I suppose it IS hurricane season, after all...

    VCM-24VF Excessive noise

The distortion when viewed in a small box is probably the way the viewer is handling the video.

    what do you think?

There are few talented rappers. Then there are people like this... I prefer rock (the good kind), and recently liking dubstep/electrohouse.
  11. Speaking of cinder blocks what type of screws, drill, etc should be used to mount cameras/make hole for wires. Rory you have a lot of cinder-block down there right?

    quality of dome security cameras

They are rated IP66 I think. So no worries in terms of water penetration. You will need IR illuminator of some sort if you want to see in total darkness.

Be real- Hobby? Necessity? Or both?

That is a good point... Although I don't think the computer I'm running Zoneminder on can quite take the load of having to do motion detection as well as recording everything.
  14. Yea, with like every dome cameras ever conceived, the actual camera inside can move around in every direction. I have mounted plenty of domes on walls, just have to rotate the camera assembly until its just right. Now when you mount to cinder blocks, you should use appropriate screws to secure it to wall.

Be real- Hobby? Necessity? Or both?

Well, after being broken into once, I'm OK with paranoid. I think your mind changes once something like that has happened. I find myself more aware, for example always setting the alarm when I go.

Honywell CCTV equipment has won my vote

I didn't know they made CCTV cameras! Could you post some shots? Also, do they have a website that lists their models+specs?

Be real- Hobby? Necessity? Or both?

Yea, well it looked like it had been sitting in the ditch during the rainstorm earlier that day. Smelled like bad perfume and ****e...

Be real- Hobby? Necessity? Or both?

Next scare: 9:30PM when a truck pulls in. I'm watching the cams while readying the gun as they park it and walk up to my door. No doorbell - then they leave. Of course, the first thing that comes into my head is someone trying to break in again. Turns out to be Fed-Ex - at 9:30PM? wtf? And then there was last Saturday... Someone decided to shove a bunch of crap including a skanky purse with a bunch of cheap makeup in our mailbox... I still can't think up a legit reason why someone would do this??? Would have had a perfect view of the car and person, if I hadn't parked in the way of the cameras view! Now I park at the end of the driveway...

    too many DVRs.....head will explode!

There is no "better" between IP and analog. Its all about what you need and what your willing to spend. (Analog is much cheaper, and will give you what you need). 30FPS is almost never needed for CCTV applications. Unless you're watching a driveway with cars going in/out at like 50mph, its just not needed. 15FPS is a good sweet-spot, and even 7.5 is fine for most applications too. Almost all DVRs will have live viewing included, accessible by your smartphone or web browser from anywhere. Looks like 8 cameras ought to be good for your setup. My choices = Samsung SRD series + CNB 24VF line, or Empire Security's Effio's. I like cat5+baluns for video/power. Check out my project in my sig for the setup I did with them... PTZs are cool - get one if you want the fun of it! When you're not using it, I would just park it on a certain spot, as if it were a normal camera.
  20. Yea, phone lines (typically cat5 these days) can easily be used with a balun to send that video. You only need 1 pair!
  21. I was under the impression that composite signals couldn't be split like this. Then how is it that you have been able to do that? Could someone clear this up!
  22. I would probably go as far as to wire in my own motion detector so that I could place detectors around the house, and have every light turn on at once with motion.

    what system is this?

I couldn't find any info on it just based on the image... Is there not a box you can access that has a model # on it? Or maybe you just want to break in...

    VGA to BNC

Question is, which way do you want to go: Convert a composite signal (BNC) to VGA, or convert VGA to a composite signal. In either case, you need more than just a cable, you need an active device to change the color space and signal. Search online for "VGA to composite converter", or the other way around (depending on what you need).
