In few words in all ref material All reference is about HORIZONTAL res meaning when u see 480 tvl or 720 pix its all about horisontal resolution and u raise good point which was discussed here few times so do forum search and then comeback here if u still need more info My personal opinion NO DVR on market will record true 720x480 what they will do DVR will create windows that size ( 720x480) without actually resolving each pixel and its very easy to prove

Have done this years ago with multiplexer and VCR at that time I contact with scale tech and got trigger output from scale to start recording as of today easy to do with any analog or IP system
