Turn you auto gain control back on and you will get better picture. But not a bad picture really.

    Samsung SCO-2080R -- First images

You got it back in a very dim location shining out in a bright location. The Auto Gain control is taking into account the immediate area the camera is in and adjusting accordingly. Try moving your camera out towards the edge of the porch more and/or zooming in your lens and it should re-compensate.

    pss playback - dahua dvr

You should not be having that problem. Here is a screenshot of me doing what you are trying to acheive: Can you post screenshots of your troubles. Also, what DVR are you using?

    VCM-24VF Excessive noise

The first picture looks like it has alot more light than the second picture. I bet if you move the CNB in the same position as your other camera you would get good results. Your still gonna get noise if the area is real dark, no matter how good the camera is.
  5. Its quite common for your power supplies to have a higher voltage right at the power supply to account for long cable runs so that is perhaps why you are still getting around 12 volts at a 150'
  6. They all do that. I think it was probably just in the perfect position to receive the glare at the time.
  7. yeah its pretty amazing seeing the difference between a camera with and without an IR cut. Whenever you dont see them side by side, the pictures without IR cut seem to be fine but whenever you put them up next to each other the difference is quite noticeable.
  8. The "oldies but goodies" prevail in color by sure. Thanks for the added comparisons and pictures Rory. I'll have an indoor test to come and then off to low lux tests after that.
  9. Whats crazy is the Ultrak has the lowest resolution but out of all of them it gives the best colors in my opinion. Of course with the Ultrak Pelco and Samsung, there is no real default setting on those cameras so the current settings may be favorable for the given light conditions. For the CNB and Effio's, I just put them on the default settings. I am sure if I tweaked the settings I could make the colors look better. The CNB had funky colors on this one IMO, but still a good picture. The Effio W/out IR cut also had funky colors but that is to be expected with no IR cut.
  10. Got the Pelco cameras in so I was able to do another test today. Glad I got the Pelco cams now because it fills the gap between the Ultrak 330 TVL and the Samsung 550 TVL. The Pelco's are 470 TVL so fits nicely in between. See my first post for pic of Pelco. Anyways for this next experiment I wanted to point the cameras at a focused object. In this example, I pointed them all at my truck. Here are the results:

Low budget small town community-based CCTV system

Yeah you could do it. Just like Rory started. If you are looking for low cost analog systems, then you could have each house have a 4 channel DVR. There isnt many 1-2 channel DVR's out on the market that are worth are darn and the ones that are any good cost more than a budget 4 channel. As long as each house has internet service, any of those 4 cameras would be accessible from the web. As long as you use the same brand DVR's, you could use the included DVR's CMS (Central Management Software) to have law enforcement to log into each DVR from one centralized computer in which they could see all (or most) of the cameras from every DVR at one time. Tom is right, you need local recording at each DVR, off site recording for that many DVR's would be horrendous. Also, if you wanted, you can also install the same software on any other computer as well. So if the homeowners wanted to view what was going on in their town, they would need to install the CMS software on their computer as well and input all of the IP information from each DVR as well. You could do it, yes. Having several homeowners agree to do this is another thing. IP cameras are probably better for this scenario, but if you are on a strict budget than you could do what was just mentioned.

HDD RPM speed important on a DVR?

I was incorrect about Dahua only recommend 7200 RPM. There are a few on their list that they recommend that are lower than that.

HDD RPM speed important on a DVR?

Just be sure if you do use a lower speed than 7200 RPM or a green drive, check in your manual that it has been approved.

HDD RPM speed important on a DVR?

When it comes to hd's for dvr's, I would recommend not getting a cheapie. At some point in time the hd could be the single most important piece in your system. U can get some 1.5 to 2tb hd's for under 100 bux online. Stick a fan on it like u said and u should be good. Dahua only recommends 7200 and if I remember u have a dahuaa correct?

    Considering SC-Black

Dont know who manufactures it but Super Circuits brands it.

    Considering SC-Black

Their specs are a little misleading. In the description it says "The BLK-DH1008000D is a powerful pentaplex DVR that supports up to 8 channels in full D1 resolution at 30 frames per second, in real-time live, recording and playback modes." But then when you go furthur down it says "Recording – This DVR features real-time live, real-time video recording at 120 FPS @ 720x480. This allows you to select either seamless full-motion recording or recording at higher resolutions, which is more important to you". Basically they are not telling you the whole story. It appears that it does full frame rate 30 FPS every channel in CIF which is pretty typical among most DVR's. In D1, it does 120 FPS at D1 which is not full frame rate D1. It would need to be 240 FPS to be full frame rate D1. Their specs are also lacking alot of other details.

My quest on getting a PTZ up and Running

Sounds more like a DVR issue.
  20. oh dang. you almost get a pretty good face shot too. Chances are, he'll walk by that again I bet. What you should do is put up a dummy cam as a decoy in good reach and have another camera aiming right at that camera. PM me if you want a good dummy cam, you can have it as long as you pay shipping.

    pss setup

Probably just a difference in the way the IP is typed in. What IP are you using to login to your android. Sometimes I have noticed you have to put the port number after the IP address for IE and PSS.
  22. Cameras usually put off tons of heat already so I think it would need to be below 0 on a consistent basis before you would have to worry about anything. We have several cameras up in out system where we have bypassed the heaters and fans in our housings and the past winter we had several single digit days with some thick snow storms and now we have had one of our hottest summers on record. Cameras are still ticking.

    My Laptop is Slow

I have a Toshiba Laptop that was pretty fast when I first got it but now its really slow and I have done everything under the sun to try to speed it up and its still slower than crap. I am not a computer expert by any means but I think I know more than most people and I have researched the web for all kinds of techniques to speed up my comp but still no good results. Of course I use it for everything now and it has several programs on it. Is it possible that my hard-drive could be slowing down my computer. Was thinking about getting a new hard drive. Not even sure what kind mine currently has right now but it just seems to take along time to pull data from the hard-drive. I know RAM has alot to do with speed but can changing out the hard-drive make that much of a difference. And can anyone recommend a tool or the easiest way to clone data from my old hard drive to the new one.
