Why Ip camera is better than analog?
groovyman replied to ab2reza1360's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
The wheels on the train go round and round.....oh wait, that's bus....nevermind -
Here's why I shy away from a brands like Aposonic: visit the company website and try to find some support for their product. Very slim, if any. Try and find a manual, firmware or software - many of their models list nothing. In my opinion you're purchasing an unknown product with little to no self help support - and who knows what kind of phone or email support they provide? If you decide this is what you really want the best I can offer is this: "don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed."

Great! So glad you were able to figure this out. -
need help setting up remote viewing with 2wire
groovyman replied to bigerk's topic in Security Cameras
The first thing to find out is which ports need to be forwarded in your router for remote viewing. I didn't see this information on their website, but call or send an email and see if they can provide a manual for the model you have &/or provide the port numbers. -
Seems that certain Cisco (Linksys) routers are shipped with automatic updating turned on (or was turned on by the end user). Last week Cisco sent a firmware update that did a lot more than just update the firmware. Read the linked articles below for the full story. The affected models appear to be the EA4500, EA3500 and EA2700. From now on I will no longer purchase Cisco routers, I don't care how much apologizing and backpedaling they do and I also don't care that it affects a just small group of routers. I think this is completely irresponsible and I can no longer recommend their product. It's going to take them a long time to live this down. Why Ip camera is better than analog?
groovyman replied to ab2reza1360's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
What's wrong with the first Subway video? I think the guy can be identified very clearly. And it's just one camera angle showing the customer side of the counter. I'll bet there's another camera on the employee side. -
Yeah, many people here use and have been recommending Dahua product. I've been using Aver Nano Hybrid DVRs lately. Not perfect, but I've been happy with them and have no problems recommending to add it to your list of systems to look at. I wrote my opinions about the unit a few months ago here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30147

I can understand wanting to go with Linux, but you might be limiting yourself as to drivers and software. There's much more available with Windows, as I'm sure you already know. As you're keeping the existing cameras in place, have you considered a stand alone DVR? Either a 32 channel or maybe two 16 channels? I'd consider two 16 channels in case one system goes down alomost all of the cameras can be moved to one unit temporarily. You may even want to consider a hybrid model that can accept analog and IP cameras if you're considering changing some cameras to IP sometime in the future. I'm not trying to sway your decision, just want to mention that there are very good stand alone DVRs on the market that are easy to use either via the unit itself or remote software from the LAN or WAN. Backing up video & saving to a PC or flash drive is a breeze. Converting to different formats like mpg or avi is easy too, then the video can be converted and burned to DVD. Very little maintenance too. Just something to consider.

Ummm, OK. I wonder if he was sitting on it. Can't tell if he put the phone into his pocket when he leaves the car. Hope he wasn't hurt too much, but it's kind of funny to watch. http://9to5mac.com/2012/07/02/finnish-90-day-old-iphone-combusts-into-smoke-cloud-on-cctv/

External Storage options for Speco DVR-16tn?
groovyman replied to DVRstunted's topic in General Digital Discussion
The manual states that the 16TN has a couple of firewire ports, but I don't see where it states the maximum external storage the device will recognize. Specs state that 4 internal hard drives can be connected for a max of 3TB, but also states the drives are IDE. 750GB IDE hard drives cost a small fortune today. In any case, I doubt the unit will have enough storage of 16 channels for 6-8 months. Calculating how much storage you'll need is not an exact science as there are too many variables affecting file sizes, but I'm thinking you'll need approx. 1TB per channel if recording 24/7 @ D1/7FPS. Storage capacity per channel will be more or less depending on frame rate, quality settings, motion detection, etc. -
Thanks for sharing your story. I think it's unfortunate that the DVR cannot perform the way you want and hope you can resolve the issue, either with a replacement QSee or another brand. Personally, I would return the unit and get something of better quality. You're seeing first hand how these bargain dvr-in-a-box systems are not necessarily a bargain.

I think he's looking for something that can be sprayed onto a dome cover, but it's not clear what he's trying to protect against. Maybe a camera is in an environment with a lot of airborne material that sticks to the camera dome cover?

Got a Cisco router? You may want to replace it.
groovyman replied to groovyman's topic in Test Bench
I've been using a WRT54G w/ DD-WRT for years. The WRT54GL is still available in the market, but because of this fiasco I will not buy Cisco/Linksys product for a long while. There's too much competition out there. What a way to tarnish a reputation and kill a brand. -
Some of my QSR (quick service restaurant) clients (I service their POS equipment) have surveillance systems by DTT. Many times when working on network connectivity issues DTT would call to report the DVR was offline. So, it's obvious to me they offer a monitoring service that alerts them to when the DVR is not communicating back to their servers. I think it's a nice service to have for people who do not monitor their surveillance equipment on a regular basis, only to find out, usually when an incident happens, that the last recording was weeks or months ago.

Actually, he might be. "was working perfect on win 7 32 bits & 64 bits" But, we don't know if he updated that system to Win8, if it's a different box, what the environment is, etc., etc., etc.

CCTV Newbie looking for guidance
groovyman replied to cclark89's topic in General Digital Discussion
I've installed it on many iPads as well as iPhones and Android phones. I haven't installed it on any Android Tablets though, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. I have a handful of clients with older DVRs and IP Cam Viewer works perfectly with them. A couple of guys like to keep a close eye on their businesses via the surveillance system when they're at home and use their iPads over their home wifi to do this. -
I've done it all the time throughout the years - not with CCTV, but in general. Whenever Microsoft makes a preview available I always try it out. It's a necessity in the IT field to be educated on new technologies that are coming out. The education needs to start well before the final version hits the streets. sure (in general), just not in this case, i would never take a working geovision card and attempt to use it in an unreleased OS. we are talking about a specific scenario. what are the benefits of taking a working system/card and trying to use it on windows 8? i have a geovision camera system at a business that has been running solid on windows xp for 5+ years. you think it is a good idea for me to wipe that system to try to get it to work with windows 8? the system should only be recording camera feeds and nothing else, which is why i am trying to figure out what the benefits of upgrading the OS are. The specific scenario is the OP wanting to see if hid card works in Win8. Nothing wrong with that. As he stated it worked in previous releases. I think it's obvious that a change was made to Win8 in its current release and the OP is looking for advice on a workaround (which nobody can seem to offer, including me). What are the benefits of trying to use the card in Win8? All depends on your point of view. In my opinion it's the satisfaction one gets when getting it to work. I find it's alot of fun to tinker around with things. In my IT career I learned more by tinkering around and trying different things than I ever did in a classroom or from a book. I like to get in there and get my hands dirty, so to speak. My motto: if it don't fit, force it (just a joke - not to be taken seriously or out of context). Now, I think it's ridiculous and downright irresponsible to experiment in a production environment, whether it's a surveillance system or any other type of system. But, in a test environment do what ever you want, learn and have fun doing it

Help how to reset admin password on D9104BG DVR?
groovyman replied to keshaun's topic in Digital Video Recorders
The manufacturer is in China. Contact info: http://www.raysharp.cn/global/Contact.aspx D9104: http://www.raysharp.cn/global/productInfo.aspx?Id=109 D9104B: http://www.raysharp.cn/global/productInfo.aspx?Id=124 As you'll see, there's nothing listed in the download section. The least they can do is post a manual. The only downloads they seem to have is remote viewing software under the Technical Services tab. I hope you have success contacting them and resolving your issue. -
Wow. Seems to be a pattern with this company. I also wouldn't knowingly support a company that goes bust every 5-7 years. Looks like Norbain is one of them.

Multiple IP Cams with live feeds over the internet - Project
groovyman replied to mds1256's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Another thing to be concerned with is bandwidth. I don't know the amount of upload bandwidth at your business, but if you have several incoming connections at once it can possibly slow the network to a crawl. Along with tomcctv's suggestions about limiting the camera channel(s) a user can view, the number of users that can be configured in the dvr and length of time a user can stay logged on, I would also look for a DVR where you can set the amount of bandwidth used per channel. The Aver nano mentioned can do all this. It's also a hybrid that can use both analog and IP cameras. -
The assets were sold to Newbury Investments. There's a model number YS-3508V. Search results are full of chineese wholesalers. From there the specs and manufacturer are listed. To me it looks like many other inexpensive DVRs found on ebay.

Hmmmm, the topic of this post changed from "Anyone Know brand name of this DVR? Please help" to the current "Tell me about PSS software" rather quickly. The content of the original post was edited out also.
