We have used the iVMS4500 on Apple products (iPhone and iPad) for ages and it is pretty good. Price of the hardware is a bit of a put off to some clients and now they are looking at Android solutions. First client to try a Motorola Xoom tablet and the software install says "incompatible". I have no idea about Android and its ins and outs. Hikvision's site says compatible with Android v1.6 and above, the Xoom is on 3.2. Any experiences out there?

Any IP65 housing should withstand normal weather conditions. The standard for IP65 allows for "limited ingress", a great phrase that can be exploited I guess. Don't confuse a camera housing's rust potential with IP ratings. A steel housing can be IP65 or higher but will rust in no time in a coastal application. If you want something for the coast you should look at stainless steel and maybe to an IP66 standard. If the site is a powder coating line then one would assume they have piped air available (usually used on the guns). If this is the case run air up to each camera position (you only need low pressure in something like a 5mm pipe) and then use an air nozzel to point at the screen of each camera housing. By creating an airflow on the screen you will keep it clear and won't have to worry about build up. Nozzels come in various formats and air "shapes" so you can create a flat air flow on the screen almost as if you were pointing a traditional washer unit at the housing. Done it a few times successfully.

My first instinct when I look at the picture is why is it still in colour when clearly the light levels are very low. Is this a day/night camera? A half decent day/night camera should perform down to around 1lux(or less) in colour and 0.01 lux in monochrome. To give you an idea of what that is consider full moon and qtr moon respectively (crude comparison but good enough). The other thing you can choose would be a dome with IR. You are only going a short distance, yes some claim 80m but that is generally based on being able to see something reflective a long way away as opposed to illuminating something for the purpose of identificaiton a reasonable distance away. With regards to touching the lights a couple of houses have tried it round here. Turned out they were growing weed. Funnily enough the electricity company and the police took a dim view.

The security settings in ie are an absolute minefield. Have you checked the box to allow unsigned Active X controls? I know when I did get it running I had to check and uncheck loads of different settings to get it to work. Firefox is a little bit more forgiving and if you have it "half installed" in ie you will need to find it and remove before giving it another go. You may also find that the next securiy update from MS then goes and takes you back to square one as well. In the end I gave up with ie and just stick with the very good and stable iVMS4000 on the client and the iVMS4500 on the iPhone.

Hi We use Win7 64 bit and have been using iVMS4000 for serveral months on stand-alone systems and compression cards with no problems. Sorry no experience with the IP cameras yet. Chris

The problem I have found with Hikvision is over confidence in the brand. As mentioned above Hikvision is the 2nd (some say largest) biggest manufacturer of DVRs in the world, therefore I think when all of us buy from Hikvision we assume that we are not alone. We have spent hours working on problems with certain aspects of the Hikvision products under the assumption of it is a problem with us not doing something right, only to find out that the problem is with the product and Hikvision have known all along. We even had someone from Hikvision here look at one of our very fundemental problems (ie the product did not work) and say there was no problem and it must be us. Turned out 3 weeks later that it was most certainly not us and it was a known problem. However the product is still advertised on their site so others must be hitting the same issues as us. A more focussed forum would allow us all to share the problems that we think are unique to us and maybe put pressure on Hikvision to resolve these issues or let potential other buyers know what they are in for.

Hi Just found the forum and there is some very good experience being shared. Hope to be part of it in the future. In the UK there is not a very large user base for Hikvision etc so it is good to see a wider forum here. Specific question. Has anyone used the Hikvision 42xx cards with their midi card (the matrix card)? We have had a world of problems, and without them using the words "yeh, they don't work together" we get the feeling that they ehhhh don't work together. We have previously used the 4000 series cards to build simple systems such as 32x4 DVR (32 cameras in, 4 monitors out) so moving over the 42xx series seemed like a logical step but we just don't seem to get anywhere with their technical support apart for vague "try this, try that".
