Greetings Bob, Keep on reading and glad you visited us.

That's your choice.....depends on manufacturer as companies like NVT and Nitek make various models depending on distance and features. Are you sending video only? or PTZ? If sending PTZ data, you will need passive transmitters.

Can RG6 cable be used for short run on CCTV system?
rapid replied to wishmegood's topic in Security Cameras
Sure you can use RG-6 for short runs....go for it...unless this is cablevision cable which is why it may be cheaper....then don't. You want RG6/U, copper center conductor and copper braid with 90% shielding (cable tv will use an aluminum braid). This braid shields against electromagnetic interference (EMI). If you are referring to low voltage beside this line....there's no problem. If this is 120ac then you should seperate the cabling running parallel by a few inches....you can cross cable at 90 degrees without any issues. -
looking for a better outdoor housing for box cam
rapid replied to griffonsystems's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Have always been happy with the Pelco housings....Check out the EH3508. I've tried others, but always came back to the Pelco housing. They have a good heater/blower and scratch resistant viewport. Very easy to use with hinged lid and a good weather seal around the hinged lid. -
Thanks Larry.

focus a camera with motorized zoom lens
rapid replied to cro70's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
You might check out http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=160&highlight=focus+zoom+lens Focusing is best done at night when the iris is fully open....when you adjust the focus at night, during the day the focus will remain constant. Neutral density filters can also be used during the day to accomplish similiar task if you are inclined. As far as zoom lenses, 1. Set zoom lens to full wide position. 2. Set fine focus (front of lens) to midway of range. 3. Set backfocus to make picture in focus. 4. Zoom in (Telephoto) and adjust the fine focus for best picture. 5. Return zoom lens to full wide position and lens should stay in focus (track). Extreme normally backfocuses in the factory before they are shipped out. -

How to crimp RCA connectors onto RG59 coax
rapid replied to lister's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Hi Lister, There is no center crimp pin required as this RCA plug requires the center conductor to be soldered. The sleeve is then crimped on the copper shield. It will take a bit of practice, but: 1. Skin the center conductor long enough so that it pushes through the hole in the center conductor of the RCA plug. 2. Clean back the copper shield so that it covers the neck of the connector. (as above) 3. Slide collar over neck of connector and crimp. (As you mentioned, if crimp is uneven, then crimp chuck is too small...use larger chuck for RG-59?...play around with the amount of insulation to make a tight fit. 4. And finally, you need to solder the center tip. Heat the center pin on the connector and when hot, slowly apply solder. The center core of the cable should bond with the connector.....remember not too much heat! Hope this helps. -
Haven't done this for a camera, but have used the following two products for electric locks and alarms. This is a power transfer hing typically used for electric locks (see wire loops on image)....they run about $200 but require taking the door apart....chiselling out the hinges to make them fit.....as well, passing the wire from the hinge side to the door camera position can be tricky...easier for hollow core doors. Another method which is cheaper is installing a door cord similiar to the following. Price approx. $10.....yeah, I thought you'd like the price In both cases, these units have 4 stranded wires....two for power....two for video.....You could use an unshielded twisted pair module for the video.

The DVR you're looking for, should have a composite video output. Depending on what you choose, this output will be in the form of an RCA or BNC connector. RCA BNC RCA to BNC adaptor RF modulator If your TV has a yellow RCA video input, no problem (similiar input if you have a vcr or dvd ) and connect the two If you have an older set, you can buy the above RF modulator.....available from Future shop or other big box stores which will provide this video input.

Parking Lot Application - Autotracking Camera Suggestions
rapid replied to rapid's topic in System Design
Thanks for the comments. Looking at mounting the fixed cameras in a dome and have used Videolarms 20 inch VLP20 housing in the past.....hoping to find something smaller and discrete for todays cameras. They have the QVIEW product which is 12 or 16 inches in diameter, and can house up to 4 board cameras on movable goose neck gimbals. Noticed that Extreme had the EX44 Dual Sensor Dome Camera. Any other avenues I should explore? -
Yes, they have an IR cut filter...you can hear it when it switches. Guess they don't exactly mention it in the install specs. I'm happy with the product.

What does 4~9mm Vari-Focal DC Auto Iris Model mean?
rapid replied to fas's topic in Security Cameras
Sorry VST_Man....I think you meant to say 4mm is wider than 9mm? The higher the focal length of the lens, the narrower the field of view & the larger the target appears. -
Here is an excerpt from the instruction manual I found @ http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/WVCP254H.PDF Yes, I've used this camera before....just this past weekend. Quite compact for my application....funny thing is, lense is bigger than the camera body! This what you're looking for regarding the IR cut filter?

Best and most impressive ptz/ multiiplexer controller?
rapid replied to jisaac's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
So it begs the question, if you push the joystick up....does the camera point down? We had a tech who was a pilot and he would purposely reverse the tilt + and - on the receiver making the AD1650 keypad resemble an aircraft joystick.... confused the operators. Have tried the AD Touch Tracker which is a pretty cool controller....don't know if over time your finger would get sore! One thing the controller should have is proportional axis....if zoomed in the joystick sensitivity is less...easier for tracking. -

Twisted Pair - Shielded or Unshielded
rapid replied to ben_indo's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Hi ben_indo.....copied this from the NVT www.nvt.com website. Can shielded twisted pair be used? Some customers have successfully used shielded wire up to a few hundred feet. However NVT does not recommend it. Its high-frequency roll-off will severely degrade the distance performance. Use of an amplified receiver can compensate for some signal loss. Multi-pair wire (six pairs or more) can have an overall shield without degradation. Coax is an unbalanced method of transmission... UTP is a balanced method of transmission... Common Mode Rejection is the ability of a balanced input to reject the part of the incoming signal which has the same amplitude and phase on both input terminals, referenced to ground (The ability to respond to only differences at the input terminals). The original signal has a positive part on one termination and a negative part (opposite polarity) on the other. Any signal 'common' to both terminals will eventually get rejected, cancelled at the receiving end. The use of shielding would inhibit the effectiveness of CMR. Sorry to go technical on you. -
Parking Lot Application - Autotracking Camera Suggestions
rapid replied to rapid's topic in System Design
Thanks guys for your comments. As suggested, I'm going to stick to fixed cameras positioned at key points in the vehicle compound. The autotracking PTZ would have supplemented the fixed cameras, but based on your feedback might not be the right environment due to multiple targets. Just wanted to explore this avenue. I've seen some of the video analytic software/intelligent video at ISC which would be another alternative in order to automate the process. I'll check out the Cernium software. -
Twisted Pair - Shielded or Unshielded
rapid replied to ben_indo's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Always use unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. Each pair cannot have a foil shield or system will not function. An overall cable foil shield is ok. Good luck! Cheers......Rapid
