I just did the same upgrade and opted for the NV6420e8. Biggest reason was no limitation on the IP streaming. I have both analog and IP cameras and it really made a difference to me. Being able to capture more frames from my analog cameras was a big plus. If you check the specs on the EH1008 youll see the IP streams are limited.

I know in the past they had issues with H series mother boards and always told me to use a P series. That said, I have a NV6420 running on a H55 gigabyte motherboard with onboard graphics and it's stable. I plan to try it on a Z68 soon.

Thanks guys. Looks like the solutions you guys sent would work better with a zoom that can be controlled with rs485. Does't appear my HD4600 can do that. Maybe a box camera with a motorized zoom might work better.

Either that or a closer camera. I have a 60mm lens on an analog box cam that could read that easily. That may be a tall order fitting that much lens in a smoke detector. But I defer to the experts.

WD makes a green drive designed for constant read/write operations. WD10EVDS or WD20EVDS. A little more expensive, but supposedly designed with constant use in mind.

Thanks I'll take a look at that. I prefer getting the pictures in an email, but that option might be interesting.

I have the demo of ExacqVision running and have it where it can send me an email when triggered by movement. I can't figure out how to attach a picture to that email. I have been running Avermedia's software for years, and it can email up to three images, which is a feature I really like. Is it possible to do that in ExacqVision?

It seems the analytics is their big selling point. Is there any NVR software that approaches their ability?

I am also interested in these cameras. I think I am ready to step up a grade and wonder if these are worth looking at. I would also be interested to know where they fall price wise, as these seem to be a well kept secret.

NV3000 4 cameras 30 total frames per second with one IP camera support NV5000 4 cameras 120 total frames per second with up to 4 IP cameras Basically with 4 cameras on a NV3000 your only going to get 7.5 frames per second per camera. 4x7.5=30 With a NV5000 you can run 4 cameras at 30 fps. 30x4=120 If you even think about having more than one IP camera, then the NV3000 won't work. Hope that helps. EDIT: I just realized your asking about the Lite naming. My guess it's just a marketing thing to separate the NV3000/NV5000 from the more modern PCIe cards.

There are Cat 5 extenders out there that can push over 550 ft. If your running the wire, you could pull a second larger pair for power. I have used cat 5 extenders in the past with success. I have also pushed 400 feet on many occasions and still had success. We even have runs over 328ft on original cat 5 (not 5e) running gig ethernet. My experience in an industrial environment. We did have the occasional situation where we reran wire, but that was rare.

I would also advise you look for a DVR that can support IP cameras unless your prepared to scrap the whole system at some point. I started out with an Avermedia NV3000 and several cheap cameras. This year I bought my first megapixel Sanyo camera and am going to get several more over the next few months and go all IP. Sanyo HD3300's can be had for just over $600. The daytime picture quality is stunning compared to some decent WDR domes I bought last year. The WDR's do handle low light better.

Lets say you have cameras pointing east and west. They are likely to get direct sun exposure while the sun rises or sets. How does this impact a camera's life expectancy? Should you always try and mask the sun? We get a lot of storms, so having a view of the sky is nice sometimes.

EEk! that would not be good. If using a smart PoE switch like a Cisco 3560, you could monitor the output on each port and possibly catch any heaters being on when not needed.

I don't see a problem. It looks like that case can handle a full height card and the NV5000 isn't very long.

I can see where moving back and forth from linux and windows might be an issue. Your really not using the same software compile. I do love your USB ethernet idea. Least cost/hassle when you want to toss together a test system.

Thanks! I plan to put at least one west facing camera (Sanyo HD4600) indoors, so temps won't really be an issue. So it sounds like most domes with would not fare well just being where the sun can reach the glass. Sounds like I might want to reconsider putting a HD3300 looking west, and possibly put a HD2300 on another window. I assume the trade off would be longer life, for slightly degraded picture quality.

Sounds like it makes sense to install a dedicated nic and tie the license to it's mac. That way you can move it between computers without incurring the expense.

Thanks Alpine! It makes sense they would let you move it. I just hope they don't charge a fee to do so. I work with some software that will ding you for license moves.

Regarding the MAC address using ExacqVision. If you upgrade hardware and get a new MAC address, or move to a new computer, what's involved in moving the license?

Does the Avermedia NV5000 have built in I/O capabilty, or do you need to buy additional I/O box? I only need one or two inputs for starters, and what I read on Avermedia's site leaves me thinking it has 4 built in.

Hi with the NV cards you need to add the I/0 box. Is that true of any of them, or only the NV3000 and NV5000. Looking at the picture you attached, it needs a db9 port to plug into. Does it also require the purchase of the 4 port audio board? I found another quote here that led to my confusion.
