I am installing a GEO600 on a new computer running win 2000. All seemed OK until I got the message: "The ordinal ll could not be located in the dynamic link library DSOUND.dll" Any help will be greatly appriciated. Thank you. Robert

Today, I received a call from one of [our] commercial banks, needing a CD of a recorded event for the Police. The event was a woman trying to cash a stolen check. Pictures were great. This setup was a computer that we built, with a GEO-600 card. Computer had a CD burner, and Ahead Nero software. Although I think the bank ended up with a good CD, it did in fact take about 45 minutes on the phone for me to talk one of the bank tellers through the procedure. I was reciting the procedure from memory, and the bank teller had never made a CD. The question that I need help with: is there a better or simpler way to make a CD? Thank you.

At one time, the P4 processor was the only processor to use with the GEO cards. Recently, I have seen post from others that indicate they are using the AMD processors with the GEO cards. Is this a matter of preference, or is the P4 processor really a better choice? Thank you. |Robert

Operating System for GEO-600 cards
Robert Oaks posted a topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
Has anyone used the Linux (Suse) operating system with the GEO-600 cards, and if so, have you had good results with it? I am using Windows 2000 now, but getting rather burned out by having to shell out $100 + bucks for every system that I build. Your comments will be most appreciated. Thank you. -
Operating System for GEO-600 cards

Thanks for the replies; I have been out of town and just getting back to the post. I am always amazed at the level of intelligence that so many of you exhibit on this group. Wish I had a small amount of you expertise. Looks like I will stay with windows (either 2k or xp) which brings me to another question. Although you touched on the subject, I still would like some clarification: It appears that several of you feel strongly that XP may be better than 2k for the Geo-600 cards. I have not used XP, except for the os that came on my laptop. However, if it is considered better than 2k, then I want to change. Is my understanding correct, that I can make as many as 3 hardware changes before having to call Microsoft for [permission] to continue using their xp software that I have paid dearly for? Again, thanks for your input. Robert -
Operating System for GEO-600 cards
Robert Oaks replied to Robert Oaks's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
No, I am not a partner, and dissapointed that can't use Linux system. I do understand that the XP pro offers some advantages over win 2000. However, have also heard that the XP makes it difficult to make changes to the setup, etc. if there is a need to change components at some point. I need to keep this as simple as possible, as I am mainly in the alarm business, and just do not have the time to devote to learning too much about the computer/video aspect. Are the advantages of using XP worth considering, or should I just stick with the win2000. Thank you. -

We made a document seperate to Geo that does the Backup, it has pretty pictures and every screen shot. Have been on vacation and just saw this and another post. Thanks to all for you replies. We need a way to "talk" our customers through the process of making a CD. Is there a way that I could obtain a copy of this doument? Thank you. Robert -
CD for the Police
Robert Oaks replied to Robert Oaks's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
OK, so what would the procedure be to make a CD. Is there a better way than using the GEO backup to place the segment on the hard drive, and then using Nero to extract the segment (with play-back program) to the CD? Thank you. Robert -
CD for the Police

I overlooked that the OS was Windows 2000. Would your example work with OS 2000, and would this produce a CD that could be viewed, and a hard-copy print be made? Thanks. Robert -
When setting up a new pc, using GEO-600 card and 3 hard drives, set for motion only recording, is there any advantage in having the drives "sleep" when there is no activity, such as nights and weekends, when building is empty. Thank you. Robert

I have just built a new computer, and for my first time, have partitioned hard drive #1(of 3). In the past I have not done a partition. The drive is partitioned 3gb for drive "C" and the balance of the 120gb drive as drive "E". Windows 2000 is on the 3gb "C" drive. Should I install the GEO system on "C" or "E" ? Thank you.

Well I now have yet another problem that I need your help with: Began the installation of a GEO-600 on a new computer; nothing on the unit except windows 2000, the mother board drivers and the VGA drivers. After installing the GEO software & hardware, when I try to open the GEO program, I get the message box: "The ordinal 11 could not be located in the dynamic link library DSOUND.dll." Can someone please guide me through this problem? Thank you.

I sincerely appreciate the replys, but frankly, I am now more confused than before. I do not know what a software-span is, and don't know how to change the 2gb to a 5gb: I will just have to go back to the non-partition version, which is working perfectly in all of our setups. Some day, when the alarm business slows down a bit, I will try to learn more about computers; or better still, will soon find a stand-along recorder that is affordable, long term storage, and quality-built. We just do not have enough time to spend on building and setting up these computer/recorders. Maybe we can even find someone to build them for us, so that all we have to do is open the box and place them into service. Many thanks.

I need two (2) GEO 600, 16 camera boards; with 6.? software, complete with the BNC connectors, and standard warranty. I have been purchasing from a company in New York, but feel that I may be paying too much. Does anyone know where I can get a good price, good service (shipping) and tech. support (if needed)? Thank you. _________________

Where to purchase DVR cards
Robert Oaks replied to Robert Oaks's topic in General Digital Discussion
Problem has been solved: I happened upon a site where I was able to purchase the above at the price I have been looking for. Saved myself over two hundred dollars, as compared to where I have been purchasing. Thank you. Robert -
In my opinion, you are making a big mistake if you go with the 1/4" format: the 1/3" format will give you a much better picture. For awhile, I used the 1/4" format on a number of jobs. I realized that the quality was not what it should be, and now use only 1/3". Befor you buy, have the seller set up a 1/4" camera & a 1/3" camera (both Sony) side by side, looking at the same subject matter. Then, you be the judge. . . .

Got an email from http://www.dvrwholesaler.com this morning, promotting their Linux embedded PC recorders. I was ticked off to start with, because on the email, they showed my password. Anyway, to garner some innformation, I called their "800" number, and was most surprised to find that I had reached "newegg". Then tried their regular phone number, and it was also "newegg". Phone guy did not know anything about DVR wholesaler, or their pc recorders. Does anyone know about this company. I have been looking for an embedded pc system, but something is not just right here . . . thanks

What computer components to use
Robert Oaks posted a topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
I know that I have read post here that give info on the very best motherboard, memory, processor, and AGP card, to use when building a new computer for the GEO card. However, I can't find the post that I need. If someone can suggest exactly what the best components are, I would certainly appreciate the info. While at it, what would you sugget for the best hard drive and power supply for the GEO setup. I would like to start with the best, and hope for the best results, for a long-term, trouble-free, system. Many thank for your help. Robert -
What computer components to use

Many thanks to DVR_Expert_Australia for your in-depth info. I plan to build my next system exactly the way you suggest. Robert -
I have never partitioned a hard drive when using the GEO card. I would like to do this on my next build. Please tell me how much I should alocate for the windows 2000 operating system, and should the operating system be the only item on this partition? I usually install an automatic defrag program, along with the CD burner software. Normally, I use (3) 120gb Western digital drives, as I do not know how to alter the bio to use a 200gb drive. Also, after reading some other post, it looks like I should consider a different brand of hard drive, maybe Maxtor?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Robert

We are building our own PC based video recorders. We of course load the Windows operating system, the video card software, the motherboard software, the CD burner software, and the GEO software. Usually, we also load an auto defragmenting program. When one purchases a notebook (and I guess some of the desk tops) there is usually a restoration disk that returns the PC to the same condition as when purchased. Now this may be a stupid question to those of you that are computer literate, but anyway - Is it possible for an individual to make a restore disk to load the items in the first paragraph above? It would be used for new-builds, and for restoring a PC when a problem arises that can not be fixed without a software repair. Thank you.
