Need help: don't know wheather to go PC or stand-alone
Robert Oaks posted a topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
For over a year we have been building our own PC, and installing 30fps GEO cards- usually 16 ch- with windows 2000; 3-120 hard drives; good quality mother board, video card, and usually 512 mem. Installing the GEO cards, and getting it setup is a royal pain! So, we started looking at stand-alone DVR units. The single biggest problem with all that we looked at is too small storage, for the video pictures. Our systems are used in commercial banks, and we need a minimum of 5 to six months storage (motion only, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week). This is not a problem with the systems we build, but seems to be a big problem with stand-alone units (unless we go into the $5,000 plus range, which our budget will not allow). The biggest problem with the systems that we build seems to be windows itself: et. the system freezing; memory loss-blue screen; etc. Is there a pc based system that uses (what I know as) an embedded chip? Does anyone care to share some helpful information on a system that we might consider that will full fill our needs? Thank you. Blythe -

These people (General Solutions) seem to be very difficult to deal with. Could you point me towards a good distributor of this product? Thanks -
Have you had any "hands-on" experience with these recorders? What do you think of them? Thanks

You may wish to take a look at the 7th or 8th reply down under this thread. As a follow up to the mentioned post, I went to the "Hunt Electronics" site, which was mentioned in about the 6th reply. What I found was very interesting to me. It does look like the "Hunt Electronics" company is the manufacturer of the DVR shown on the "Rugged CCTV" site. I called "Hunt", and found out that one of their distributors is "Systems Depot", whom I do business with on a regular basis, and they are only 150 miles from me. "Systems Depot" had the "Hunt" rep. call me (in less than 15 minutes) and arrangements for a demo are under way. "Systems Depot" prices are $500 to $600 less than "Rugged CCTV" and they are fantastic people to do business with. Does anyone know Wade Moose, who started "Moose Products", and know owns "Systems Depot" ? Great guy; I have known him for many years.

I find the above post(s) very interesting: I went to the Rugged CCTV site (saw a post about the company in another group) last week. I was impressed with the info that I saw, and gave them a call. I talked with the gentlemen that wrote the ad/story (Allen), and after I sent him my credentials (showing that I am in the security business) he had his secretary (wife I believe) e-mail me prices. The prices looked Ok, so I e-mailed the secretary, to tell her just how sincere I was in making a purchase of 3, 16 ch units, and that I would like to fly out to their facility (near Dallas, Tx) and see their unit, and consumate our first purchase. This would have been a trip from North Carolina to Texas, with all the expenses that one would incur (maybe $1,000), but I was willing to do this. She told me that because they did business with the US Goverment, that no one was allowed in their facility! Now I know why . . . they operate out of their kitchen. Saved; in the nick of time . . . Thanks for the info.

Thank you for this information: I have looked @ the web site, and I like this unit. I plan to phone them tomorrow. If the price is OK, will definitely plan to order a sample unit. Thanks again. -
I have just built a new computer to use with a Geo600 card. I am using a 250gb (western digital) card for the first time, and the system will not "see" but about 125gb. The reacorder is working fine, except it is not showing that I have 250gb. Can someone offer a solution? Thank you.

We are paying $600.00 for the G-Max, 16 camera, 30fps, cards. We are getting good service & average support. Is this a good price or should we look elsewhere for a lower price (service & support considered)? Also, we are using windows 2000, and P-4 (1. processor. We never know just what mother board, dd ram card, and video vga card to use. We want top quality, but do not want to over buy, if the more expensive componant is not needed. What should we be using? Thank you very much.

We are paying $600 for the G-Max 600, 16 camera, 30fps cards. We are getting good service, and fair tech. support. Is this a good (fair) price, or can we save money (and still get service & good support) elsewhere? Thank you.

I note that some AGP video cards have an "TV out" connection. When using a GEO-600 recording card, what would give the best quality picture: using a good quality 19" TV with the "TV out" or using a good quality 19" computer with the AGP video output. Thank you. Robert

I have been using a Geo600 video capture card, with a VGA video card, and a monitor attached to the video card. Does this produce as good a quality picture as a standard TV attached to the "video output" of a video card? I am trying to get the best quality picture possible. Thank you.

I have about had it with ordering parts, building the computer, installing the Geo cards, and the agrivating and long setup procedures. I want to purchase good quality, 12 to 16 channel recorders, at a good price, and with good backup support (if needed). I do NOT want credit terms. Where can I find a good reliable distributor on the East coast? Thank you very much.

This is a very dumb thing to consider! Do you have any idea of the legal issues and the liability issues of this. Don't do it. You are treading on utility company property, and you have no right to be there.

what are the alternatives for PC-BASED CCTV backup system ??
Robert Oaks replied to tom's topic in General Digital Discussion
So lets say that I have some kind of "3rd party" backup software. I have a 250gb main drive, and a 250gb drive that I want to use as a backup drive. Now if this is setup to do the daily backup during the night when the system is not recording, will the system backup just what has changed on the main drive since the previous night. What happens when the backup drive reaches the "full" mark - and will it start erasing the oldest data just as the main drive does? Thank you. -

So if I understand it, I can record on the 250gb "main" drive (using a custom built computer, with the Geo-600, 30fps, card, and a "secondary" 250gb drive as a backup drive. With proper software, the system will backup the "main" drive - incrementally- to the backup drive. Now, what happens when the backup drive fills up? Will it also start to re-record over the oldest data like the main drive will do? Thank you. -

I appreciate your reply(s), but none of them will suit our needs: TV-out, and a time-lapse vcr is what we have, and are in the process of getting away from. Our selling point to our customer was that the vcr age was gone! The backup that we need has to be 100% automatic, and on a daily basis. The raid device is over-budget, and not sellable to our customer. There must be a better way??? Thanks again. -

G-Max 600 - 16 port video capture card
Robert Oaks posted a topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
I am paying over $600.00 for a G-max 16 port, 30fps card, with 6.2 software. Is this a decent price, or can I do better? Thank you. -
I have installed a GEO600 card and software in a brand new custom built computer. When I try to start the Multicam main program, I get the following message: The Ordinal 11 could not be located in the dynamic link library DSOUND.dll. The program will not start. Can someone help me on this? Thank you.

What is the Direct X that you mention, and how does one install it? Thank you.

backup procedure for Geo600/computer system
Robert Oaks posted a topic in General Digital Discussion
I tried to post this yesterday, but I must have done something wrong as it does not appear. Anyway . . . I would like your help in the following situation: We are using a Geo600 (16) card with a new, custom P4 computer. System uses 3, 120gb hard drives. It records motion only, usually with 9 or 10 cameras, and only from 8:00am to 5:00pm. This uses only about 2gb per day, 5 days a week. The problem is, We do not have any type of backup, and this is where we need your help. We are considering using only 2, 120 hard drives, 1 drive for normal recording, and the other for backup? If this would work ok, what software should we consider? Would (could) this be a completely automatic procedure, that could take place at night when the system was not recording? Would it be an incremental type of backup? Your input will greatly appreaciated. Thank you. Robert -
what are the alternatives for PC-BASED CCTV backup system ??
Robert Oaks replied to tom's topic in General Digital Discussion
Thank you for your reply. We have been equipping the mentioned computer/recorders with three (3) 120gb hdd. When hdd #1 fills up, the system goes to hdd#2, and then to hdd #3. We were thinking of using only one (1) 250gb drive, and a backup "system" equipped with a 250gb hdd. How would this work if we used 1 main hdd, and then used another like size for the backup. The bank requires that we have a minimum of 5 to 6 months archived data available at any given time. Thank you.
