I have a megapixel ip camera set up for a neighborhood civic association capturing to a NVR. The quality of the day images are extremely good and have been used in the investigation and prosecution of a few incidents. The images at night are not so good and I'm not sure of the best approach to try to get something a little better. It appears to be the glare from the headlights that is causing the problem. The camera is a Vivotek IP7161 2-Megapixel and has a 1/3.2” CMOS sensor and a minimum illumination of 0.8 Lux / F1.6. It also has an IR-cut filter. Should I try to hit the area with an external IR illuminator or is there a lens filter that would help? The association has a limited budget but is willing to spend some money to get better night shots. I just want to start in the right direction. I posted some images below from the system. Day images are very good. Typical night image. Sometimes we can get a shot a good as this but it is the exception. Vehicle leaving images are a problem.

bongofury - GOM Player works great. Thanks a lot. It has some fantastic features. My favorite is that it lets you go forwards and backwards in the video using the keyboard's arrow keys and it lets you configure how many seconds the time jump is. It as great frame extraction features as well. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks again

I tried VLC for a while but couldn't get it to play my file properly. It just shows the first frame and acts like it is playing but the screen never changes. It does have a 'take a snapshot' feature which is exactly what I need. I wish I could get it to play. My file is just a regular MJPEG AVI file. It plays in Windows Media player and other programs I've tried.

I'm using Synology Surveillance Station to record images from a 2MP IP camera from a remote site and it is all working fine. I can look at recorded events on the device but I want to take downloaded MPEG AVI files and review them in the office. My problem is that Windows Media Player doesn't let me zoom in on frames or extract frames to jpeg for further analysis, printing, etc. The frames are 1600X1200. Does anyone know of software that will let me play a MJPEG AVI file and extract individual frames from the file?

I am having a hard time finding a megapixel lens that is ir-corrected and has a max focal length of 30-50mm. The application is capturing license plates coming into a facility day and night. The camera is day/night with removable IR-Cut filter. I need the greater focal length to get a tight enough shot from the building the camera is mounted. If I had to make a choice between megapixel and ir-corrected what should it be?

I have a Vivotek IP7161 2-Megapixel IP Camera. It came with a 4.5-10mm lens and I need to change that out with a lens with a greater focal length (around 40-50mm). I want to get an IR-corrected lens and there are many out there but I am confused on the resolution capabilities. Do I need a HD lens for this camera? The Vivotek suggested replacement is a Tokina 6-60mm TVR0616DC-IR but I don't see it listed as a HD lens. I thought the resolution was more of a factor of the sensor than the optics but I could be totally wrong. Any insight?

My main profession is a software developer and I build quite a few PCs for development and clients. Windows is definitely my comfort zone. My OEM cost on XP and Win 7 is the same so that isn't a factor. I was leaning toward XP like you guys said but I wanted to make sure I wasn't just being old and stubborn about it. I've had exceptionally good luck with Win 7 but I haven’t run it on a machine that just sits in a closet and runs a single program for months at a time with no user interaction.

I'm building up a new PC to use as a NVR for a couple of Vivotek IP761 megapixel cameras. I am going back and forth between XP Pro and Win 7 Pro. This is a simple setup but it needs to be as reliable as it can. The pc will be in a closet and not monitored very often. It will not be connected to the open internet either. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I don't understand why I would need to leave an analog slot open on the Avermedia card if I am using the Vivotek server software to record the IP camera. Can you please shed some light on this? Thanks.

Can I use an Avermedia DVR card and software to connect and record my 4 analog cameras and on the same computer run the Vivotek IP server software to record from an IP camera? Thanks?

When I was first laying it out I was planning on using quad baluns as I have had great luck with them on other installations. The problem is routing power up there so I figured I'd just use the siamese. This is a 100 year old building with super thick stone walls and it is also very ornate so I am trying to minimize as much visible cabling as possible.

I need to install several runs approx 100 feet across a flat roof of a church. The church is build like a fortress and extremely inaccessible as far as punching through to run from the inside. What do you think? Also, should I try to attach it a little off the flat roof to a side wall or is it just the same to lay it down on the foor itself? Thanks.
