  1. based on the pictures below, what is your best guess on which cnb camera is this?
  2. I should have pointed out the cams I'm looking at where dome style. the only difference between a given manufactures indoor vs outdoor is that the outdoor dome has an airtight base with gasket between the base & dome. (lets not factor that some outdoor domes are also vandal resistant, cause I'm not concerned about vandal damage) I'm strictly looking at the difference of an indoor vs outdoor dome being a airtight base & gasket between the base & dome. For instance, look at the higher end CNB domes, their outside domes don't have a heater or fan but they are still outdoor rated. CNB also sells their indoor version for a fraction of the price. In a few instances, I've seen the indoor version sold in groups where someone bought them and for whatever reason and just wanted to dump them at a very fair price, so they are advertised at a fraction of what they retailed for and a huge discount compared to the outdoor version. Only difference again is that the base isn't air tight and the dome and base doesn't have the gasket. Lets say a group of 8 indoor dome cameras are advertised for $400. That is only $50 a camera. retail on the indoor dome cams are around $110 each The outdoor version retails for around $160 each. So at $50 each, that is a steal of a price. Same specs as the outdoor version that sells for $160 each, only difference is the non airtight base & non gasketed dome I've seen groups of outdoor rated domes advertised but always near retail price. It is the indoor domes that sell for cheap. If others are running indoor domes outside just not out 'in the weather', I'd jump on some of these indoor domes and put them up outside. I could save a lot of money going this route, but on the same hand it isn't worth while to buy them even at a discounted price if they are going to fail prematurely. Does the airtight base & gasketed dome between the outdoor vs indoor version of most domes, make that much of a difference in longevity?
  3. How many of you guys are running indoor cameras outdoors, say on a front porch. I have run across several good deals on name brand cameras with the full line of specs but I didn't jump on them because they were the manufactures indoor series. I do realize that outdoors there is going to be moisture to contend with since the the indoor cameras are not sealed, but the cameras will not be dealing with any direct water such as rain. Will just moisture in the air kill the cams? I've been using computers and other electronic items outside in a non climate controlled garage and never had any problems. I also read on here where some of you have mounted your DVR in an attic or basement, and I'm sure those areas are not climate controlled. So am I destined to kill an indoor camera if mounted outside under roof? I know nobody has a guaranteed answer. I'm just looking for others who have tried running indoor cameras in an outdoor environment and if the cams held up.
  4. I am able to set preset locations, I am able to recall these positions. I'm able to set left & right limits then have the camera do a never ending back and forth scan between the left & right limits. However, if I use the keyboard joystick, point the camera at a certain spot, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, the camera will automatically move to a home / parked position. Unforunately, the home / parked position is aiming down at the ground where it does no good. I read the manual for the GE Cyberdome, and I can't find anything that mentions about a home / parked position. I want to do away with the parked position. Wherever I last set the camera position, I just want it to stay there.
  5. I picked up one of these cameras from ebay a month or so ago. It is an alright camera. I have it in the default setting. When in 2.8 (wide) mode, at night when the IR's kick on, they create port hole effect, meaning there is a white circle surrounding the outter most portion of the monitor, (not a huge issue) but in nighttime ir setting, I don't think you are getting a full 2.8 because of the white circle blocking out some of the picture on the monitor. You'd be getting more like 3-4mm of actual viewing on the monitor. secondly, the camera is not a true day & night. it is electronic day & night. True day & night uses a mechanical IR cut filter (a servo motor physically moves a filter infront of the camera, to block IR in the daytime, and at night when the camera switches to black & white, the servo retracts the filter). That is what happens with a REAL TRUE day & night camera. This camera, uses electronic day & night. Meaning, the camera tries to adjust color during the daytime to compensate for the IR washout, and at night it switches over to black & white. I was a bit upset when the camera arrived and found that it was not true mechanical ir cut filter, when in the specs it is advertised as true day & night. Not a huge issue when it comes to picture quality, but it just upset me that it was advertised as being true day & night and when I got it I found that it was electronic day & night. Also, the housing is huge, leading the buyer to believe that there is some serious "meat & potatos" or "guts" when it comes to the camera, but the huge housing is all for show. I unscrewed the front of the camera, and it is nothing but a tiny board camera mounted inside a huge housing. Say the body of the camera is about 8 inches long (not including the mounting bracket). The board camera inside with IR illuminators are only about 2 inches deep. There is 6 inches of empty space of the camera body housing. The housing is made big to just give you a feeling that you are getting more for your money. Now on the other hand, I bought one of the 700tvl effio-e turret cameras (they advertised it in the title on eBay as a dome camera, but there is a difference between a dome and a turret style camera, this is technically a turret camera, not a dome camera), the turret looks like an eyeball & socket, where I'm sure you already know what a dome camera looks like. The 700tv turret cam that I bought on ebay was a fixed 3.6mm and I'm more pleased with that camera, than I am with the 700tvl effio-e 2.8-12mm bullet camera. Simply due to the fact that I didn't have to set the focal length or focus (the 3.6mm is set to a fixed 3.6mm and comes prefocused), plus the turret design is so simple to mount and aim. Plus it is a fraction of the size of the 2.8-12mm bullet that you are looking at, because as I mentioned above, the bullet camera is oversized just to give you a false feeling of you are getting more for your money, but I like the simplicity & compact design of the 700tvl effio-e turret camera, plus the fixed 3.6mm is a good general purpose wide field of view lens, and with it being prefocused, it is a easy installation. So right now I'm using a 4 channel DVR running 7.5fps full d1 every channel. I'm using a Cyberdome PTZ (just for fun) The other 3 cameras are 1. CNB 3.6mm bullet cam (this cam is the generation before the mona lisa chipset came out), I got it new in the unopened box off eBay for like $15, it is 600tvl, it is nothing too fancy but it is a good little camera for the price that I paid. 2. the 700tvl effio-e bullet (the same one you are inquiring about) 3. the 700tvl effio-e turret - 3.6mm fixed lens, I really like this camera Right now I'm saving up for a Qvis Apollo HD 16 channel DVR to upgrade from my 4 channel dvr. Once I buy the Qvis DVR, for the other 12 channels, I'm going to experiment with one of the VCM-24VF CNB dome cameras that everyone talks alot about on here. I'd also like to try out one of the Samsung Dome or Bullet cameras, the bullet cams would be the SCO-2080, they also make a SCO-2080R which the R symbolizes that the camera has onboard IR illuminators, but I don't really care for onboard IR, due to bugs constantly flying around the camera because of the IR. I have played around with using seperate IR illuminators (cheap ones bought on eBay for about $10-15), they are a turret design, with about 48 ir leds. I prefer to position them several feet away from the camera pointing in the same direction as the camera. In the warmer months when the bugs are out in full strength, having the illuminators away from the cameras really cuts down on bugs flying in front of the camera at night. Cause the bugs are attracted to the ir illuminators, and since those are positioned several feet to the side of the camera, the bugs tend to cling around the ir illuminators and not get in front of the camera. I'm shooting no further than about 30-40 feet, and the cheap $10-15 turret illuminators on eBay do the job just fine. They are mounted up under the eve and although the illuminators are not waterproof, I wrapped the turret in a little bit of white duct tape and they have been running just fine outdoors. I just wouldn't go mounting them exposed without some type of overhead protection such as the eve. If you were to mount it to let say a pole with no overhead protection, the weather would kill the illuminator the first time it rained. Well anyway, I could go on and on, but this is my little (long) review of the effio cams along with some other information about my setup. Hopefully it helps someone as I have done countless hours of reading on here which really helped me to learn the in & outs of how to go about setting up my system. So if someone takes the time to read this and it helps them out, then I feel good knowing that I gave back a little to the community that helped me.
  6. forgot to include link here it is http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=25673
  7. see in this post, there is a matching dvr & keyboard, running the ptz, and I'm only going to guess that the keyboard can also control the dvr to change video display output to the monitor. This is the type of setup that I'm interested in, can anyone share information about setting up a keyboard / dvr that communicate with each other. I was looking at Qvis or Dahua for the dvr as these seem to be well recommended on here. But I need to know if these dvr systems can work with keyboard controllers
  8. does anyone know of a well stocked gallery showing off installation pictures. I'm looking for pictures where a dvr is mounted in a dvr lock box, and a wall mounted PSU is beside the lock box, and how the wires are run between the two. Do you leave the wires exposed, do you run them in flexible conduit, etc.. I'm also looking to mount a ptz on the corner of a building. I plan on utilzing a ptz corner mount (bent sheetmetal), and using a outdoor electrical box and threading cable glands into the bottom of the box, and mounting the ptz arm to the box, and the box mounts to the ptz corner bracket. I noticed that CNB offers a nice waterproof enclosure that has a side hinge which would be nice to have access to the wires inside the box, without needing to unbolt the ptz arm from the box, just to get inside the box. The hinge door allows the ptz arm to swing with the door, off to the side, to access inside the box. I'm looking for pictures showing off the small details that make or break a clean installation. For instance, mounting a vandal dome on the outside of a brick structure, using clear caulking to go around the dome to seal the dome to the brick, not using a colored caulk allows the clear caulk to blend in and not really be noticed. Small tips & trick like that, but I would like to see them in a picture gallery rather than reading thru hundreds of threads where people talk about a tip or trick that they use. Seeing it in picture format, where I can just flip thru picture after picture, would really be helpful.
  9. I'm running a honeywell 4 channel dvr but looking into upgrading to a 16ch I am running all 4 channels on the honeywell dvr, but have several new cameras including a ptz sitting on the shelf, so I plan to upgrade to a 16ch dvr Right now my dvr is sitting on a filing cabinet to the side of my desk, out in plain sight. With the new 16ch dvr, I want to mount it in a steel dvr lock box in the closet out of sight I am using a 32 inch lcd tv as the monitor, and want to control the video output settings of the new dvr via a ptz keyboard joystick. I have not purchased the new DVR nor the ptz keyboard / joystick, so my options are wide open at this point. By controlling the video output settings of the new dvr via a ptz keyboard joystick, more specifically let say that I want to display channel 2 on the monitor, I'd use the ptz keyboard / joystick, I could do something like a button sequence such as pressing a 'monitor' button, then pressing button '2', which would have the dvr display channel 2 on the monitor. Another example is say the ptz is on channel 3, I'd press the 'monitor' button, then press button '3' to have the dvr display the ptz channel 3 on the monitor, then maybe do a button sequence such as a 'ptz' button, then button '3' which would let the joystick know that I want to control ptz on channel 3. I plan on running a IR repeater from my desk to the dvr lock box in the closet, so that I can still use the remote that comes with the dvr, but I want to primarily control the video output selections of the dvr, using the ptz keypad / joystick. Is this something that can be achieved on a residential system 'hobby' budget. Don't confuse me with one of the $400 box system 'hobbiest' but on the same hand, I don't have the budget of a casino security control room system either.
  10. As I have spare time in the evenings, I have been doing a ton of reading and research on this forum. I've been tinkering with a home system comprised of good deals as I come across them on eBay for good name brand cameras. I'm looking to add some more cameras and as I read on here there is so much love / hate for cnb I've noticed so many people making suggestions as to other brands such as this comment from another thread "I personally don't care for 90% of CNB's products... I've found others in that outperform for the same price range or cheaper but hey... whatever floats your boat." So what are these other brands?? Why hold out on posting the 'secret' that you have found better cameras?? To contribute to this thread about other cameras besides CNB, I've read about are the new Effio cameras. From what I read, Effio is mainly the chip inside the camera. I believe the effio chip is releatively new on the market. One particular camera that uses the effio chip are the Empire brand cameras. They have both bullet and dome (actually not dome but turret). These Empire cameras seem to be TDN True Day & Night, 700tvl, with built in IR, (not sure if the ir can be turned off, but I can always cover up the ir with tape), I prefer using seperate IR illuminators places several feet away from the camera to keep the bugs away from the camera when the IR is on at night. I've been thinking of giving one of these Empire cameras a try with the new Effio chip. on a side note about the ir illuminators mentioned above, I have not used any high end ir illuminators. So far I've bought up a few dead ir bullet cameras on eBay just for their working ir illuminators. That is cheaper than spending $100+ for a dedicated ir illuminator. KT&C also seem to be talked about that they are good quality cameras without paying for much higher name brands that 'break the bank' - sort of on the line of CNB but KT&C doesn't seem to be as talked about as much as CNB on here, but the people that do talk about KT&C don't seem to bash it as much as CNB It seems like the next price range up from the CNB, Empire, & KT&C, would get into the Samsung line. I am looking to pick up a few samsung cameras to try out but they are getting up there in price and that is hard to do on a side hobby budget. I'm looking for good cameras, not $30 cameras bought thru ebay shipped from hong kong. but I can't afford $500 for a single cam. What other brands are there that work well in low light (seems like just about all cams work good in daylight, what sets the good cameras from the bad are low light sensativity) as all the cams that I'm going to be using will be outside my house so I prefer an weather tight housing. I'm not too particular if it is dome, turret, or bullet. So beyond the camera brands above, what are some 'secret' brands that you guys are using. Remember, per forum rules, don't post links to stores as the mods seem to keep a tight grip on banning links to stores. If you want to contribute to this thread, please post the manufacturer and model of the particular camera that you want to discuess / recommend. A link to the manufacturers website seems to be allowed, but I'm still relatively new to this forum, so I'm just trying to follow forum rules.
