Where to hide the DVR ????
ljarrald replied to FishinMortician's topic in General Digital Discussion
For me, it's fun to THINK like a criminal. Let's be honest, we've all thought "If I'd rob a bank, this is the way I'd do it..." Most criminals are idiots. And most of the crimes are happen are smash-and-grab, crackhead type petty thefts that these cameras would protect against. But my thoughts are, what if a SMART criminal were to do this... what would i do in this case? The lock box idea given by the user above is a good idea, but if I were to see a lock box with a DVR inside... EVEN WITH a tamper switch, I'd simply pour water down the ventilation holes till I heard some crackles and a pop.... and I would continue with my crime spree.... My idea is to create some sort of box-inside-a-box system where if someone were to pour water down, it would flow AROUND the dvr and go through a side channel and come out the other side, leaving the DVR unharmed. Also, They sell SUPER CHEAP water detection systems (for basements and water heaters), that run on 9V batteries that pretty much last forever... if you stick one of them inside the box, it would go off if someone pours water down it, and that would be enough to scare the thief away before he manages to get enough water inside to harm the DVR. you'd be running too and from the nearest tap... also... the DVR may be bust but it could be possible to recover data from the HDD. if it was me, i'd pour petrol in and around it and light it then GTFO -
arww what a shame

sorry i thought that what you asked for the camera would be zoomed into the door every time motion is detected at the door no motion it zooms back out. or a bosh box will give you picture in picture 1 zoomed in the other out yeah, the rest of the room does not need to be covered when the alarm system is set (nobody in house) the reason for zooming out is because... why not? i think i may use two statics and switch between them depending on if the alarm is set or unset. the bosh would be good! but i can't afford one

with most box zoom cameras now you can have auto zoom set vis motion on camera which will be better. if you have it set via your alarm when set the rest of the room is not covered thanks but i disagree. the rest of the room does not need to be covered... if intruders come in through the window, an external camera will see them. if intruders come in via a window at the back of the house... an external camera will see them. if intruders come in through the front door or and front windows... external cameras will see them. so the rest of the room does not need to be covered. if it zoomed on motion then it would be zoomed out at the first break in which is not what i want. thanks t=for your advice though

hi, about two weeks ago i added a camera to look at my back gate power and video go through a single cat-5 cable. i used cheap baluns and i had to use an 8 ch PSU because there were no free outputs on my other one, this camera was the only thing connected to this PSU and the picture was fine. but then i added two cameras at the front of the house this weekend (there will eventually be 4 cameras at the front of the house and the video signals from all of them will go through a single cat-5 cable), i have run one 4 core cable to supply power to all 4 cameras (doubled up cores) which is currently powering the two cameras i installed at the weekend. i am, again using baluns for these cameras. when i connected the power cable for the cameras to the 8CH PSU that the back gate camera is connected to, everything seemed fine. but then i connected the blauns at the dvr end and as soon as i plugged one of the new cameras at the front of house in (camera 9), cam 6 (back gate camera) suddenly got interference in the form of horizontal lines (a bit like the 'cctv effect' commonly used in films). when i plugged the second front of house camera into the dvr(camera 12), camera 6's interference stayed the same but there seemed to be a bit of ghosting on cameras 9 and 12. it is a bit hard to explain so i will get a video when i am back home. i have used blauns everywhere else in my system and there seems to be no problem. the blauns i used for the 3 cameras mentioned in this post are slightly different to the ones i've used in the rest of the system, but that shouldn't effect it... should it?

i have always wondered how wind turbines/power stations sync the frequency... you can't have them all out of phase, that'd mess things up. as it is the national 'grid' every single power generator in the country has to be synced... how do they do it? does anyone on here know?

IMHO CD cameras are better than CMOS but that is based on experience... i bought two cheap 'eyeball' cameras from ebay. one CMOS, one CCD... the CMOS one showed green as purple! that was just the start of it... i am sure others will tell me CMOS is better though.

yup, very easy to source! if you are on a budget and dont mind used stuff ebay is the way to go, i got all my cameras used from ebay... all work a dream. they are usually on there due to company vacating office space and taking cameras, system upgrade to ip, building being demolished etc, etc.

i am tired and not in the trade so will quickly and briefly answer some of your questions for now until i wake up or someone else fills you in. 1: analogue cameras use BNC connectors. 2: capture cards are what you connect your analogue cameras to... the card digitizes the video. 3: no, ip cameras output a video stream which can be accessed by a computer, NVR or NAS. with an analogue system you can view it on your phone. 4: no. ip is superior (hence why it costs more) 5: 12V DC and 24V AC are the two standard power supplys. you can use cat5 or coax for video. i started this reply, got distracted and finished so others may of posted by the time i press post.

Gmail's SMTP requires encryption and auth. That DVR appears to support neither. OP: CONGRATS! Glad we could help i used the orange smtp IP and just put in my email address in the 'local user' i spelt it wrong which made me realise... (as you said) it just needs something that resembles an email address to identify itself in my inbox with

i should mention that i am doing all of this remotely... i will not have acess inside the house for a couple of weeks. i can access the router setup and the dvr. i have just thought that i can not access the dvr from a web browser (it uses port 25) so i will try opening incoming and outgoing port 25.

okay, and i just leave the 'local email address' blank? that field is confusing me...

Can't I get away with a webcam instead of IP cam in my case?
ljarrald replied to Digiscan's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
you could get a cheap analogue capture card for the pc and invest in a decent analogue camera and use blauns to transmit video and power over the cat6. -
they have moved their call centres over to india... i'd have better luck talking to a wall...

my ISP is orange. according to this website the smtp server is smtp.orangehome.co.uk. if i trace that in CMD i get the ip: 193.252.22.189 will this be the ip to use? what about the port and 'local email address'? thanks!
