  1. just thought i'd add... this is the camera http://www.cctvireland.ie/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=114
  2. that channel is in colour when different cameras are connected (swapped it and a working cam around, same problem moved to the other channel with the camera) the pal/ntsc may be the problem. i think (THINK! i could be wrong, my memory is bad.) that it was b+w in the 16 way screen, then i restarted the DVR and it was colour in 16 way, but im not sure. i'll tinker.
  3. No, I just think the videos are very helpful. CCTV42 is run by the chap in the videos a chap called Henry. A very nice guy I met at IFSEC ahh. i like henry, he has a voice that would be good for children's TV. i was going to tell him in a comment but thought he may be offended so i didn't
  4. no but when they 'don't arrive' they send you another pair so it works out well. not that i have ever one this!...
  5. Thanks, I'll check on eBay for them. I think the prices on these have went up slightly. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A5251&rt=nc&_nkw=balun&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1

    My Home cameras.

that looks good. i love engineers that don't let things go to waste. i have two 12vDC/24vAC ermm. Panasonic (i think, i knew what they were then just as i was about to write the make... poof. and the make has gone from my head) B+W box cameras from a skip at my old school. there were three housings in the skip so i went into school with a big bag and a multitool and at lunch i took the cameras out of the housings and put them in my bag (housings didn't fit) the 3rd housing just had a fake camera in unfortunately so i just made do with the two. i have no idea why they were thrown out, they were working perfectly. and no, its not theft (well it is but...) they were in a skip... destined for landfill. i just saved them. one is currently in my shed, the other is in my big box of cameras. i did think about using them in housings like that dennard one of yours but i think on a house they look too ... beefy(?) so i went for dome cameras instead. (i do have one 'bullet' camera, but the camera is built into the small housing so it works on a home) if they were colour i probably would of got two housings like below and put them in the alley. but i went for vantage day/night dome cameras instead.

    My Home cameras.

I'm not feeling upto it today, I am quite ill with some sort of fever. I'll do some another time. okay, i have something too :'( hope you (and I) get better soon
  15. in places on my system where i am going to have 4 cameras close to each other (like the 4 cameras in and around the shed, or the 4 at the front of the house) i am going to use baluns with cat5e cable. i have used cat5e for the shed run (one camera in the shed, two on the side looking at the alley, one on the other side looking into the neighbours garden) and i have had no problems so i bought another 100m of supposedly cat5e cable only to discover the pairs weren't twisted! me and the supplier have come to the agreement that they will send me 100m of twisted pair cat6e cable along with a prepaid postage bag to send the dodgy cable back to them. my question is.. what is the difference? will i get better/worse video images with cat6? thanks.

    cat5e/cat6e

500 just good to have some spare ahaha. what do 500 core cables get used for then?

    cat5e/cat6e

blimey! is that 40 core? looks more like 400.

    My Home cameras.

nice! for my ystem i was originally thinking of a camera zoomed in on the front gate (front gate is in a straight line from the door, about one and a bit meters) and one of the peep hole cams. but because my dad specifically said NO wires are to be showing and blah blah i went against the peep hole camera and decided to put a camera above in the porch. i will be installing these cameras this week hopefully. can you post some screen shots?

    cat5e/cat6e

ahh right, well they've sent the cat6 cable now so i may as well use it. it is very useful to know that i can use any kind of wire for baluns though. if i got my hands on some 40 core wire (or two 20 core wires) could i run 20 video signals through it using baluns? could i use baluns with 12 core alarm wire? (4 cores for two video signals, 2 cores for rs-485 (ptz joystick), 2 cores for 12vdc power, 2 cores for alarm output (12v in alarm) and two cores for a tamper loop) bear in mind i will be using the cheap baluns like in the video numb-nuts shared in his balun post. Yes. and yes... although two cores may not be enough for the power requirements for two PTZs. okay, that's good to know. is there a standard name for 20/40 core wire? (and do baluns care about the thickness of the wire?) the 12core wire is going to go to the living room. in the living room will be a ptz controller that can also control the dvr, the 12v power will power it, the 12v in alarm power will go to a 'hacked' scart connector that will make the tv display the scart input when in alarm. the two video channels are for monitor A and B from the DVR.

  21. thanks for that. i have bookmarked that calculator. it will be very useful
  22. numb-nuts, are you CCTV42? the reasons i have used mostly cat5 and baluns is because: A: don't want to spend money on a crimper. although its a useful tool and i have no doubt that i'll need it one day, i want to spend as little as i have to, B: in situations where i have 3 or 4 cameras close to each other and away from the DVR. it makes more sense to run 4 camera signals through one cable. C: it works out cheaper than coax. my two vantage cameras on the outside of the shed have terminals on the camera for power in and video out. it did have a BNC plug connected to the video out on both cameras but i only had two baluns left and i wanted to get the cameras up. i decided to take the bnc lead off and connect the video cores of my cat5 cable straight to the camera. i accepted there would be noise but it was only going to be temporary until i got some more baluns. got to the DVR end, attached the two baluns i had to the cores the cameras were connected to and i was amazed at the picture quality! the new baluns arrived and i went and put one in one of the cameras but did not notice a difference in image at the dvr (iknow, the quality was really good!) so i just left the other one with the video cores going straight into the camera. works fine. can i use CAT5 for PTZs? i want to use 4 cores for power, 2 for video and 2 for RS-232. my ptz cameras can be controlled via the coax video line but they are going to be on my chimney and if i replace my DVR i'd rather not have to go up there and mess about with changing cores around.

    focus at night

the ir cut filter is a little piece of glass that slides into the line of sight during the day. at night it moves away but if there is nothing there, the camera WILL go out of focus. iknow this because i was trying to fix an auto iris lens that had an ir cut filter (iris was messed up) an i ended up accidently breaking the ir filter. it has the ir blocking glass that goes infront in the day, and had normal glass that slid across at night. this is to keep it in focus. i knocked the glass out by accident which caused it to go blurry at night. i bought a new lens.
