i have a similar issue also, when viewing live on the tv everything is fine. but when viewing live or recorded on the computer software, the cameras seem to flash bright and normal with the brightness. like, one second they'll be normal, then slightly lighter, then normal again.

either that or they make your lives hell. i don't think i would like to make it obvious i was grassing on my neighbours. especially if they were drug dealers. there is a big 'drug problem' in a neighbouring estate, piss those drug dealers off and they burn your house down/shoot you and your family, etc.

i think good on them. in my opinion, if you are a good enough criminal to rob an ATM and not get caught, you deserve the money. its not like anyone got hurt, and the banks have insurance.

hi all analog cameras put a voltage back to dvr via coax (only small amount) but if something happends to the electronics of the camera and puts out a larger amount then DVRs will start to play up. i.e reboot/ shut down and as all cameras have the same ground it can also effect other cameras indeed. i once accidently put 24VAC into a cheapy 9VDC camera... the camera gave out some 'magic smoke' and backfired the 24V down the coax into channel one of my DVR. that is why my 16CH DVR is only really a 15CH DVR :'(

ah, cool. what are the differences between the 120 and 240v outlets? my house is over 150 years old, there are still some lead pipes under the floors and in the walls from when it had gas lighting! in buildings with a three phase supply, does it come in 240V or 120V? if the latter, what happens if you want 240V? its not unusual to find three phase in domestic properties here. although, most of the time even if the supply is three phase, only one phase is used.

ah, i feared that may be the case fixed iris is last resort really, in the daytime the light level fluctuates quite a bit and at night time i will be using a floodlight so i don't think fixed iris will work i think i may just have to resort to using a massive housing

i have a camera mounted on the house looking at my back gate which is about 6 meters away. it is zoomed right in but because the compression of my DVR is so rubbish, i would like it to be zoomed in more so i can get better shots of faces. the current lens in the camera is 12mm focal length. i am not aware of any auto iris lenses for board cameras with a higher focal lengh which means i will have to use the lens of a box camera. i would use a box camera with lens but i don't really want a big housing hanging off my home. i have a small(ish) housing that would fit a board camera and 'box lens' so basically i need a way of fitting a big CS mount lens onto the small thread of my board camera, and a way of connecting the iris. is this even possible? if not, what do you suggest? i did think of using a camera that has digital zoom. but i don''t have one and don't want to shell out for one. thanks in advance... -luke

how good are you at DIY? you could make a 'beam' that won't be 'diffused' at a long distance and that can be bounced off a mirror at the other side of the street. you just need a lazer pointer, a few other bits and bobs and decent knowledge.

although i understand ground loops, a diagram would be very useful soundy

whoever did the electrics in my school is a tw*t. EVERYTHING is on a switched fused spur. the fire alarm, burglar alarm, disabled toilet alarm etc, etc. INCLUDING the CCTV camera PSU... what makes it worse is that the switch is in the reception!

do you have different types of... 'outlets' for 240 and 120V? how is the incoming fused? is there a fuse on each 120 incoming? center tapped sounds quite useful i guess, a sort of 'half way' between single phase and three phase i guess. i only have single phase 240 in my house with a 100A service fuse.

can i be registered as a Pro DIY'er? or integrator please? i'm not sure what your definition of 'integrator' is but i integrate systems with eachother (cctv to building management systems, cctv and intruder/fire alarms, etc) i can only really prove this through pictures and videos which i will PM you now. -thanks

hahahaha brilliant. it took me about 20 seconds to work out what the problem was though. [EDIT] that was in reply to the back to front bracket, i didn't see the replys after it.

basically there is a location where i need to mount a camera on a wall. i'd prefer to use a box camera but i don't want a housing sticking out. does a housing the size of a brick exist, so i can remove a brick, insert the housing as if it were a brick, install the camera into the housing, and then put a cover on it so the camera can see out yet still be flush with the wall? like in my diagram below... if one doesn't exist or the cost of one is ridiculously high then i will just make one. i have some perspex and my friend is a joiner so i can use his tools and materials to make a box and stuff. if i do end up going the DIY route, is there anything i should know? i was thinking of just making a cube the size of a brick with one side open that i will then attach perpsex to. but will it need a heater/ventalation, etc? thanks in advance... the diagram on the left is as if you're looking from the top (which of course you won't because there will be bricks on top of it) the diagram on the right is as if you're looking at the wall.

this will be on the side of an old coal shed, the wall is three bricks thick so going deeper than one brick isn't a problem. i am using a box cam because i got it free and its perfect for the job. i could use board cams if i wanted to (and i probably would if i had a day/night one) and could probably fit more than one inside a single 'brick housing'

yeah, but then mounting the camera would be a pain. i like to over complicate things so the camera would be on a sort of pivot type thing that can be removed to make first cable fix and connections easier. i also want it to look good when looking at it from the outside so that part will need some TLC when making. i'll take some pictures at various stages of making it for you guys to see. i'm not in any particular rush though so it will probably be a couple of months.

damn, didn't think of that. its a public forum too... bye bye my million pound idea, lol i don't even know when i'll have the time to make one to be honest. it will take me a couple of days because the inside is going to be complicated and its quite low down on my priorities list. but i will make one... eventually

what country are you in? are you looking to integrate them to CCTV systems?

heh, i wish i could have cameras that low. but i can't, they'd end up getting sprayed or smashed. nice setup there, its a shame about that drainpipe by your PTZ. it looks like it'd block lots of its view. your wiring is very neat in the basement. it is how i hope to have mine.

i was speaking to the caretaker of my school yesterday and she asked me to fix the cctv system which i'll be looking at today. we ended up talking about it, the site is massive but they only have three cameras. there is an adventure playground there because the building is also used as a community centre. they have one static camera covering a part of it and she said how they wanted more coverage but didn't want amillion cameras. i suggested keeping the static camera as an overview camera, and installing a PTZ next to it that can be put on tours/manually controlled etc. she liked the idea so hoping that they'll get me to do it, i need to know a couple of things. i have installed PTZs before using cat5 for power/video/telemetry but they used the video signal for telementry. their DVR can't do 'up the coax' control so i will need to get power, video and control to the camera. can i put all this in one CAT5 cable, or will i get interference? the cameras are all mounted on lighting poles so i could take the power locally from them and then i'd only have to worry about control and video going back to the building... thanks
