What Would You Say to This Guy? (Blah blah blah part 2)
ljarrald replied to rory's topic in Test Bench
Why does Windows need to be updated? so that within 3 years the clueless end user buys a whole new setup because the old install has become so painfully slow. hoorah for linux -

So, advice on siren/strobe for CCTV system??? Ideas???

are you in the UK? i know american fire alarms are not like the UK ones. i have tonnes so can ship you one or two if you are not in the uk... not sure if postage cost would make it worth it though. just make sure you don't use a fire tone!! pirs... any outdoor one should do. i have used one for a floodlight on one of my cameras. the PIR activates an input on the DVR which makes that camera record as 'activity' rather than 'normal' (very useful for reviewing 43 days of footage!) and also turns on a floodlight at night. redwall PIRs seem to be quite popular in professional installs. they pop up on ebay every so often -
Is the connection and the protocol is correct??

i use fire alarm sounders. most fire alarm sounders are IP65 and have a range of tones selectable via DIP switch. some have strobes too. google 'roshni' or 'flashni' GAikwqqxEAk cxJkreV8NyA ckzyLFKyR_8 ZmqcZG2eJE4 -
i don't like being watched and i am a law abiding citizen. i don't really like anything about living in a city to be honest. my house on a hill awaits... If I was in the UK I think I would be living on a farm riding horses and eating scones with devonshire clotted cream, and ofcourse eating bangers and mash that's pretty much what i aim to do (apart from the scones and bangers and mash bit) but i am only 15 at the moment so have to make do with the city. if i was in the US i'd probably just eat burgers all day

Then they shouldn't be doing what they are doing which makes them unhappy at being seen doing whatever it is they are doing i don't like being watched and i am a law abiding citizen. i don't really like anything about living in a city to be honest. my house on a hill awaits...

exactly. my mum was made redundant in 2010 because the company she worked for 'went bust' she was offered another job but she would of been worse off because she would of had to pay for after school care for my brother and she would be getting paid quite little. she has finally got another job now but still... its stupid. What exactly is their argument against the cameras? If they arent breaking the law or planning to break the law - where is the problem? maybe they don't like being watched?

someone said this... "if they want to reduce crime they should put more officers on the street. there are NONE around here. cctv doesn't prevent crimes happening. it just helps find who did it" i pretty much second that. in my area where i live the police force is pretty much non existent (it was the same before all the cuts) i would very much welcome one or two PCSOs or police officers walking up and down the roads and park at peak crime times. cameras DO prevent some crimes. but not very many. all that will end up happening is all the 'bad men' will end up wearing full face masks all the time which just makes the public feel more intimidated.

i have used one laptop drive in 3 laptops and a netbook. drivers didn't seem to be an issue. even hotkeys worked! and all machines were different makes.

my nite devil has rs-485 for OSD aswell as an internal joystick?
-
in all that i know of the osd is displayed on the video out so you could see it from the dvr. most also have RS-485 so you can use your ptz controller to control the OSD

central recording system or multiple NVRs
ljarrald replied to jeromephone's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
do NVRs not record locally as well as to a NAS? hence the Network Video Recorder -

when i was in primary school ('junior' school if you are american) whenever the people to do the alarms, emg lights, computers etc were in i used to ask if i could 'go to the toilet' and go and watch them/talk to them. they never seemed to mind and i probably learnt more from them in that half an hour of talking then i did from the classroom all day -
if you have 4 cameras down one cat5 there will be no remaining pairs! cat5 has 4 pairs (8 cores) and each camera takes one pair (2 cores) for video. Yes, but you don't want to run power from the DVR end anyway... he's powering the cameras locally (ie. power for the cameras on one garage, is in that garage). sounded like he wanted to power them at the DVR end to me...

-
if you have 4 cameras going through 1 cat5 you have no spare cores for power so it would be a LOT cheaper to power each camera locally
-
do you have mains power in each garage? if you do it would be easy to havve a 4CH 12VDC psu in each garage and then just use each cat5 cable for video only.

snowy lines on one camera

not to my knowledge, we have had a rather wet start to winter though. i'm starting to wonder about the bnc and power connections at the cam now. i will check them and post results. thanks! is it a cheapo camera? i have had problems with cheap cams in the past where power has been removed and then when power is restored i had problems like this. took hours of 'fault finding' before i actually restarted the camera and all was fine -
a bit of humour is always good and i just saw this, enjoy
