I have to say that Maplins end user technical support is by far the best and most consistent I have seen anywhere. Swan has had a poor value for money rep in the past and to be fair and objective, I haven't looked at their spec and prices recently so I couldn't honestly say they still aren't a good buy now! I just don't know. It's hard to shake a bad rep once you get one. Speak to a few people that have bought recently, thats honestly the best way see how satisfied they are with what they bought. MY personal recommendation id look at QVIS and Hikvision but be careful who you buy from. After sales support is everything if you are fairly new to the technology. I am trying to be objective rather than biased one way or the other but frankly I believe a local independant installer is by far your best route to CCTV. At least explore that route. Best of luck PS most QVIS is Dahua with a different badge on it. -
What me spend £200 ? My wife wouldn't let me....! depending on what number of channels and how long you wanted to record (before overwriting starts) I think that you could probably get a very reasonable DVR for that budget. The more channels/ HDD space, the lower the spec you can afford basically. What is your budget for cameras? You need to get someone who knows everything about everything (and better than anyone else) to explain all the specs and then pour over the spec sheets. You get out exactly as much effort as you put in I'm afraid Take a look at QVIS and Hikvision, both good brands and good value for money IMHO. Buy from a dealer that will offer good after sales support, this might prove more difficult than choosing a DVR. Find a dealer that can speak to you in plain language and explain what you are getting and what the benefits to you will be. Best of luck

Help Connecting DVR to Internet through cellular router

Love to help you Don but I'm stumped, I can't wait to hear the solution. -
Name a couple please...?

You don't need to worry about which format (frankly I'm not sure) the DVR will format the drive for you correctly In Most you just manually select format in the HDD menu but there are now more often put in a drive that if the DVR does not see a formatted disc or a not recognised format for the DVR and it will format automatically upon startup. Not all of them do this however. Just check the HDD is supported by the DVR e.g usually the capacity but id its a 500GB, 1TB 2TB these capacities will work with most DVRS but check first.

Thats a BIG ask for £500.00 Hope this news isn't bursting any bubbles for you. -
You Don't. Its already embeded in the motherboard and cannot be changed or modified. The HDD is purely for storing recorded footage. The only time there is software on the HDD is when you have a PCI card based DVR and then it's installed onto the HDD. Again the software is fixed and you cannot add or modify it, it's what comes with the card...Thats All.

There are LOTS of so called CCTV installers that can't set up the remote viewing so how are you with computers? It would be helpful to know where you are perhaps we could cooperate on projects, but not much point if you are Timbuktu. There are training courses, but don't know of any in Timbuktu? -
Looking for a new test monitor
Numb-nuts replied to jordanb's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I am not willing to spend that kind of money for equipment. I feel I can manage well enough with my existing equipment. If I were doing structured wiring as a main job perhaps I would but I only sub and EVERYTHING I do is tested by someone else after I complete. I did get told off for using a cat5 RJ45 on a cat6 cable (yes it fitted) and was told to remove it and was given a cat6 RJ45 with staggered conductor loading bar. What a difference! -
Are you in UK USA or where? I am in Greater Manchester (north) and would assist you if I have some free time Huwei routers are real PIGS to get working.

undo the rules assignment, reset your DVR to the IP you want192.168.0.XXX remove the DHCP tickbox save and and restart the DVR. Login to the router admin / password then in the main section open the LAN settings and reserve the IP of your DVR. Then go into advanced settings and set your rules for the DVR to that IP address and apply, then save and restart the router and then check your ports. They're OPEN yay! What is meant by the ip address updated it means that your networks public IP address updated As this is an outgoing service you needn't have completed the port forwarding for this to happen. It just sent the DDNS server the public address of the network it is on.

Looking for a new test monitor
Numb-nuts replied to jordanb's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Great I didn't order that because I have no clue what TDR testing is and looking it up on the internet I was still left clueless? Do YOU know what it is? The 2603 tester is the ideal model for a typical CCTV engineer, I rarely do Fiber and then I use a contractor so the optical power is no use to me, I have no idea what the TDR is like I said, The rest id perfect. One feature I forgot to mention, is it has a TORCH. How useful I thought. We are always working in places that are dark and restricted, a torch is so handy. I think the equivalent QVIS model costs just over double the price @ trade. -
Looking for a new test monitor
Numb-nuts replied to jordanb's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I'm wondering the same thing.... how effective it is at certifying cable. I do know that it uses TDR to measure cable length (and anomalies), so I think that alone would make it worth it.... Anyone have a link to the manufacturer site? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Free-4GB-HVT-2603T-3-5-CCTV-POE-TDR-IP-Tester-DVR-PTZ-Cable-Digital-Multimeter-/111224011559?pt=US_Surveillance_Monitors_Displays&hash=item19e577bb27 I don't think a remote terminator unit is included (scroll down to the bottom image) the test probe incorporates the remote in it which is a pain but it works just fine. Thats why you don't see a remote pictured seperately. Well spottes but also if you have the orange test set, and still have the remote that works with this one.also I tried mine and it works fine. -

Numb-nuts replied to bper's topic in Digital Video Recorders

Hikvision IVMS-4200 playback issue...
Numb-nuts replied to ljw2k's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Its a permissions problem, log into the web interface and check the local and remote playback permissions in the account menu. -
I have a client with a CnM 8 channel realtime DVR no model number on it. The networking function suddenly gave up the ghost. I need to re-flash the Firmware as I think this might solve the problem. If not its getting sold as a non network DVR CnM's website disappeared shortly after they went into receivership, despite which the guys still tried to assist. (thanks James) Build date 2011 firmware V2 serial 000000000000 Pictured below: Can anyone point me to where I might get hold of the firmware or provide it from their library?

Invasion of privacy - bad neighbors

I would say thats it in a nutshell, "where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy" I wouldn't worry anyway, Swann cameras aren't all that good. -
H.264 DVR recording problem
Numb-nuts replied to tyron_laidlaw's topic in General Digital Discussion
Okay then it's almost identical to a QVIS interface. Can you tell me what the remote client software is on your CD is it CMS or PSS. or open the network menu and say what the default media and mobile monitor ports are. Thi si just to identify the sGUI closer. then I can help you. to start with log into the admin account and right click select record mode to ensure recording is enabled on the channels you are using select 'schedule' and save PS: The default admin password is blank (and dont forget to log-out when you are finished) -

newbie residential install - need help!
Numb-nuts replied to fastsvo's topic in General Digital Discussion
A great suggestion, PVC conduit is cheap very cheap and if you use 1" you can pull several acles. Don't forget to plan inspection junctions and pull a pull-cord through with your cables so you can pull extra cables through later. -
I agree, I've seen that before where the IR cut filter loses grip of it's pin and just stays out even during daylight which is when the IR cut filter is required hense the loss of colour. How is the night time image? answers Bad Normal.
