Technicolor 582n Router port forwarding
Numb-nuts replied to Numb-nuts's topic in Computers/Networking
I finally managed to get the ports opened and all talking thanks. what you show above is very interesting and I think works great for the Thompson range of routers too, as the software is about the same. I'll read and absorb your comments again as I have more time to digest them but for now the DMZ pointer was a great help. I also noticed that after assigning the port forwards to the DMZ they dissapear from the port forward schemes list. when this happens you can almost guearantee the ports are going to be proven open. On my laptop I have a folder on the desktop I created I call it Port forward kit. I have a link to my CMD screen, a link to 'whatsmyip.org' and a link to 'canyouseeme.org". aswell as a link to portforward, com which I have to say I don't find a help a lot of the time. -
Technicolor 582n Router port forwarding

Thanks I'll have a look tomorrow when I return to that client. Its a nice router but frustratingly awkward to port forward. I found out that to open a port you need to set the range from the number before to the number after so opening port 2020 the range would be 2019 to 2021. Work that one out? -

I am always just as concerned about the property as I am about the camera, regardless what they cost I always like to leave things better than when I found them and no matter the value of the camera, it's useless if the mounting fails. Five pounds isn't heavy by any means though but I take the view that belt and braces hold pants up better than just luck! -
You have a point there, but to be fair to myself, I am a technician and not a salesman, but I am learning very fast. I can win people's trust very quickly and they for the most part, seem to like me and my attitude. I wanted to be a technician to avoid being a salesman but it seems to have backfired on me by going the independent route. Still for every freedom there is a price to pay and dealing with the public is that price.I can handle it though. I am learning not to get so worked up about people's behavior, although I still feel a little outraged, it's diminishing. It's all part of doing business and the best solution is to not waste energy getting upset but to just move on and find other more deserving prospects of which there are an abundance.

Ah but you didn't say that before, if it's new you should at least have a good chance of selling. I think it's either six or seven posts to give you access, that shouldn't be too difficult -
Externally, Firstly, you should do 2 things to your power and video connections. Enclose then in a water resistant junction box (IP65 or better) and second cover the contacts with silicone grease or Electrolube or some such protecter. At a pinch WD 40 is better than nothing (But not brilliant).

I think you might try selling it on ebay of gumtree. If you enough stuff to dispose of try having a yard sale. If you think you're onto big bucks, forget it used equipment is plentiful, only recent technology will sell as used for big bucks. You'll probably end up selling it as dummy cameras to DIYers. Before you do, try the for sale section on this forum. good luck. -

oooooh those look great. The principal you need to adopt is to spread the load as widely as possible. There is a limit though and at some point the whole caboodle will tear itself through the material. If it's that heavy in your judgement then you need another solution. Mount a piece of either wood or steel between across the studs and mount the camera to that. Some painting of the plate will need to be done to tidy up the look of the thing but it should help. I once installed a series of wall cabinets that were to hold loads of pot full of fruit jam (jelly). This was a drywall so I cut a piece of 3 x 1 inch timber through the middle at 45° and mounted one piece across the wall studs and the other to the rear of the cabinets. Those cabinets are full of heavy preserves and they are still absolutely plumb and solid fixed to the wall. If it will work for those a heavy camera will be no problem I assure you. I do the same when mounting display screens to the ceiling of shops and offices where they have a wooden floor ceiling above, , a good stud finder is essential. ∘∘∘∘∘ -
Some people don't know the value of quality and can'r see further than the selling price. Small minded is as small minded does. I let them get on with it. There's nothing wrong with frugality, in fact being frugal can be a lot of fun and after all saving can be fun but there is a limit I like helping people with their home CCTV projects when they are ding it not for financial concerns but out of sheer satisfaction of doing the job themselves (DIY)

I have no gripes about playing on a level playing field. Thats all I would like to see. I don't feel any animosity towards my competitors that are selling a CCTV service same as me. Customers are free to choose, but I don't like those that play dirty tricks to win business and there aren't many here most of the businesses here work in a thoroughly ethical way. If I do encounter unethical practice, I walk away now and don't get into wrangling over it and losing sleep. I was asked to undercut the price of someone that had undercut my price by about 5% but I sowed the seeds of discontentbetween the client and the competitor, telling the client if I were going to undercut the other guys price it would have been by at least 25%. He eventually used another contractor who he knocked for the money. These people are so small minded, and stupid, why hold out for the best price when you are planning to screw the seller for the money?

Like I said, I have no objection to helping advising Home Users with their DIY projects. But the gall of business owners who ask for assistance from the very people they are attempting to deny a living. The internet is a great medium there's no denying it and everyone I know uses it to check the price, but life is not all bout how much you spend That is a short sighted view. There is such a thing as value added service and that COSTS MONEY. What value to box shifters add to the idustry, NONE they simply bleed it for what they can get from it and put nothing back in.

Can any of my colleagues in the UK advise me where I can get quality POS ovelay equipment trade, for interfacing to the latest SDI HD dvrs? The client has specifically requested a quote for HD cameras. Any advise or guidance to POS overlays would be appreciated as I haven't done any of these before.

Hello Sam How do you do
-
Not sure I understand your question. It's like saying how important is electricity to the operation of the CCTV system? Properly performer Installation can give you years of trouble free performance. If you install without any knowledge or planning you are asking for a load of potential problems and although things might appear to be working, actually you might not be getting the true performance from your system. INstallers take into account distance of runs, voltage drops, all sorts of things the 'plug'n play brigade haven't yet discovered.

Running Siamese Cable........DUH!

Whatever works for you is good. So long as the finished result is good. There are a thousand ways to skin a cat, no one one of them can claim to be the correct way. If you developed your own way to do a job and you get a feeling of accomplishment from it, it can't be bad. well done and hope the installing is going well. I seem to be surviving on doing odd jobs in people's homes at the moment. Fitting TV wall brackets, installing telephone extensions, TV distribution jobs etc. -
Prevention is ALWAYS better than cure. What I am getting at is that the primary purpose for most CCTV schemes should be and is deterrent. The inconvenience, the stress and the trauma of being subject to crime regardless of how much evidence you can gather is nothing to be savored. Place cameras in plain sight, use plenty of signage at your perimeter, in the hope that a criminal will see the sgns and decide to move on and select another easier and less risky victim. Obviously there is no way of knowing what these criminals are thinking if indeed they are capable of thought so the secondary line of defense is recording. Cameras should be placed at least 10 feet higher than the nearest standing surface, ie if a fence abuts a wall then 10 feet above the top of the fence. Obviously height has advantages and disadvantages. Foe a general overview, height can be advantageous and for a close up identity view, too much height can make things difficult. ID close up i.e.head and shoulders should fill 50% of the frame height at least. In my experience, if you mount the cameras intelligently say above hawthorn bushes, they rarely get vandalised. It does happen but not that often.

I had a feeling that might be the case. The till in question has an RS232 port and the client had a POS system with analogue DVR before, but as the store is being refurbished he wants to move to HD, so then the only other option is as you say hybrid or IP (if indeed POS data processing is available yet). I have never noticed POS processing in DVRs as a function but then I have not been looking for it before now. I might see if Honeywell or Norbain can point me in the right direction.

You got what you paid for: Cheap, DIY, and little ot no technical support. Read the instruction manual, if it doesn't tell you what you want to know, you can thank the importer who offered the system as a plug n' play CCTV solution. Sorry I didnt offer any help, the following is and not aimed at you hope you eventually get it sorted. Don't know how many times I have to say this but; CCTV IS NOT A PLUG AND PLAY TECHNOLOGY AN LIKELY NEVER WILL BE

Drop Ceiling Camera Mounting
Numb-nuts replied to Liquid_Squelch's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I've seen that done quite succesfully, but I prefer where to position the camera on the tile area, and don't want to restrict myself to only where the frame crosses. Having said that if I turn up and forgot to bring ply with me, I might be tempted to screw into the frame. -

Ever think that Swann might be exaggerating their spec? Or even the real manufacturer lying to Swann? How you going to prove the spec is genuine? They know you can't . If there is a sewer drain near you it might be quicker to throw your money down the sewer immediately and cut out the middle man. Why do you think it is that professional installers almost NEVER supply Swann equipment, think about it? Oh sure I've installed Swann equipment but I would never think about supplying it. If people buy it without checking and want it installed I will do it, but I'm just waiting for that call from them several months later "erhm how much is a real system"? "and how much will you give me for my old system"? My answer is simple, "how much you gonna pay me to rip it out and dispose of it"? They know I have a point. It all boils down to your expectations, it ain't gonna be high expectations looking at Swann although they are improving. I am not into making recommendations but there are a lot on here that will, listen to them.
