  1. I call those lamp standards, and they are eminently suitable for CCTV Cameras. They do flex but not sufficient to collapse or buckle. If you use a PTZ look for a spec that supports vibration compensation. This will help you when you use the zoom to it's fullest. i.e. zoomed on some distant subject

    New Guy with some questions...

Joe, two comments, well three really 1. Swann (I think you meant) are not good value and are problematic. 2. PTZ cameras aren't any better than a static camera unless they are being monitored by someone. You can put them in "patrol mode" but setting up triggers and alarm is beyond the typical DIYer. 3. You should avail yourself of the services of a professional installer who can recommend supply and install a system that will really work well. This is how you will get the best value for money out of your investment.

Is my Power Supply Screwing Things Up?

It may be that your DVR doesn't support sync mode or you are not playing back in sync mode. There is a way of overcoming this but it eats your HDD space up. You can link the motion detection of one or more cameras so that if one is triggered the others are also triggered and recording. If your DVR is fairly modern say a year or two old you could search online to see if there is a firmware update as this may upgrade your DVR to include sync mode selection in playback. I know that some of the lower end Dahuas added sync mode in a firmware update. Now it's included as standard.
  4. It's thee material thickness and it's diameter that are just as important as the length. The shape i.e. the profile too is of significance. I doubt filling the core with sand will do anything to help. If you are not sure, I can tell you PTZ cameras are often as heavy as 7 Kg which would snap an aluminium TV pole in half in a light wind. I don't know what the slenderness ratio should be thats why I always buy mounting poles and masts from suppliers that manufacture these to order.

  6. Thats because the QVIS Atlantis will only work with it's own dedicated app. according to QVIS. Personally I think it's very petty but they have built it so that it can only work with their app. QVIS I think that was a very petty thing to do! Shame on you QVIS!
  7. Why not ask the professional that installed your system? The installer should know exactly what to do to help you achieve what you require.

Too many choices - Need some help.

Try not to rely on lighting over which you have no control, chances are it''ll not be on at a critical time.

    Working conditions

I have to admit, if the weather is fine I try to do outside work while it lasts. You can work inside when it's snowing or raining but no so easy outdoors. If you have to climb quite high up, the wind is colder up there and there is nothing to shield you. I have a pair of gloves with no fingers on them, fortunately I have not yet needed them. Its also not advisable to fit cameras outside in the wet as often they need opening and setting up ( Housed cameras) and moisture is not helpful. Sometimes it is just a matter of waiting on the weather as Soundy said. No point risking your life or safety slipping off a ladder. I have to say it has never really been a serious problem, although it does rain here quite a lot.

    Home installation

The cable in your walls is most likely NOT suitable for CCTV images. The horizontal flicker you see is probably due to a cable mismatch. In theory, you could use a wireless video sender through the VGA input of your TV, but I've never tried that so I can't confirm it would work?

    Approximate price quote

By my estimate the job should have cost to at least $3500 plus tax including your installation charges. If I were you I'd start looking for another job!

    what do you recommend?

Again, that's not a PTZ camera; you CANNOT control it remotely. Zoom range is adjusted by loosening the thumbscrew closest to the camera body and rotating the barrel; focus is adjusted by loosening the thumbscrew on the front barrel and rotating that. That's not to mention back focusing...or multiplier rings.. filters or plugging the lens in.

  17. Today as many of you will know was the Royal Water Pageant on the river Thames in London, celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of our queen, Elizabeth II. Already many vidoes of the event are available on Youtube, however having watched the entire event on television, I can tell you it was awesome to those that enjoy such spectacles and pageantry. For me, the most outstanding moments were the first sight of the Gloriana, a royal Barge specifically built for this event in the 17th century style as depicted in the Cannaletto painting of the Lord Mayors river procession. As many of you will already know, such river processions were about traditional but dies out during the 19th century due to the foul water of the river before a proper sewerage system was introduced in Victorian London. The Gloriana will be kept for future occasions, so expect to see more river pageants in the future. Other highlights were the sight of all the different craft on the river including seagoing and canal craft, battleships, seeing Tower bridge opening to the full extent in salute (a rare event), the inclusion of the boats bearing the flags of the commonwealth countries and the wider world, included in the event. There were even Barges and boats from Venice represented. Another thing to watch out for is the arrival of The duke and duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) who's wedding we all enjoyed in 2011. She looks so elegant and stately in her red outfit, an approprite colour for the Thames. Hope all who see it/ sawit, enjoyed it as much as I did.

My funeral, How do you plan to go

Right, getting back on thread, when we finally catch-up with you, how would you like to be buried ? Have you got a special theme for your funeral, like everyone except you is standing up?
  22. For the purpose, that looks like a cost effective solution, we'd be interested to know what your feeling is about the performance.
  23. You might find the current range of IP cameras a bit limiting. An analogue pinhole camera with IP encoder is the way I'd go too. Up close you aren't going to get significant benefit from IP over an high-res analogue camera. It should have a wide dynamic range (WDR) and be good in low light as in this situation the subject tends to create a light block and if you don't get the right functions, you could find the camera is great at creating silhouettes.
  24. Don't buy Storage Options then. Recording continuously for 8 weeks at a time is RIDICULOUS. You don't need to continuously record as any reasonable DVR has Motion detection recording so the DVR records only when motion is detected this will save you a heap of time searching through events rather than one continuous recording for a couple of seconds of useful footage. You can also record on PIR or some alarm sensor like a door contact etc ( door contacts can be problematic if an intruder leaves doors open and you are away) Also if you are not in residence you should consider a steel lockbox for your DVR and don't leave a display screen near the DVR, it's like telling the criminals where to find the evidence they want to destroy. Make it very obvious there is CCTV surveillance in place, this is a great deterrent because the crim simply looks for a place without CCTV. The principle is to deter rather than capturebut to then gather evidence if the deterrent hasn't worked. I had a Giant schnauzer dog in my home for 15 years and never once got burgled whereas a lot of my neighbors did get burgled and some more than once. Proves that the criminals very often do consider which is the easiest target.
  25. This is fairly basic electrical theory, you don't have to memorize the maths, (I don't) but at least you should be aware of the issue and could work it out using an online voltage drop calculator. Do this at your planning stage before you even start installation. The principle is simple, the electricity runs along cable, cable has resistance, over a distance the voltage is affected by the resistance of the cable so voltage drops off. Solution= heavier cable (lower resistance) or higher voltage to start with, or both. Result= suitable voltage at the point of delivery. It's not rocket science, (well maybe to some it is ) Like I said before CCTV is NOT a plug and play technology like Costco would have you believeso they can offload their Chinese low end junk. But this is REALLY basic stuff
