Policeman ‘chased himself’ for 20 minutes while looking for
Numb-nuts replied to Numb-nuts's topic in General Digital Discussion
I just thought it was amusing, I didn't analyze the story in detail, why do you think they are telling pork pies then, ( for those of you who aren't in the UK pork pies is ****ney rhyming slang for "Lies") ? The press have be known to lie before, but it is feasible I suppose. ho ho ho no i dont think they are telling porky pies i just think the operator must have been slightly stoopid not to realise it was the same person as who was talking on the radio. I thinks thats the basis of the story what a PC plonker! -

What a plonker. One thing I learned about shoplifters id they like to spit in an effort to escape while waiting for police to come so any new clients I have that have retail outlets where shoplifting is a problem, I will recommend an anti-spit hood made of somme shear material that allows breathing and vision but stops spit leaving it's confines. That and a velcro leg restraint because suspects can do a lot of damage when kicking out. Anyone else got any tips for restraining suspects who are violent and offensive?

HELP... Instalation of Maplin Sentient cctv

I never thought I'd see Icicles on my PTZ but today it's got at least three. Weird! They are forming on the sunshield which is about 1/2" wider than the actual dome so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. They don't appear to be too obtrusive and my field of vision isn't too badly obscured. What I have noticed is what little ambient light there is out there, is being reflected very efficiently making after dark viewing a real delight. I can view places that weren't possible to view after dark, before the snowfall.

I am in the UK. We have a big problem with little scrotes breaking into houses to steal often to raise money for their drug habits. 90% of the burglaries are committed by a small number of offenders. Nottinghamshire police force are fighting back. and winning! In the same way we have seem bait cars on TV, which the US police forces are using, police in Nottinghamshire are setting up bait houses. They find suitable houses in residential streets where the burglary rate is high, and ask residents if they can use a single room with an outside window for several weeks. They set up the scene with valuables on view and a number of hidden low light cameras in the bait house. They choose locations that are easy to access, leave a window open and wait. They set a laptop in clear view, but the laptop has a surprise, as soon as it is lifted, the offender is sprayed with smart water. Smart water is a unique liquid material, each batch having it's own unique synthetic DNA profile. It spays everywhere catching footprints and marking the offender 's skin and clothing. It can be removed but is not visible without UV light. Even after offenders have attempted to wash it off traces still remain. As I said in 90% of cases its a small group of offenders committing burglaries so they are often known to police and can be arrested for forensic examination within hours of the offense taking place. The method has very high conviction successes. Of course nothing is completely foolproof but it has driven down their burglary rates significantly as word gets around. This was all on TV this evening, absolutely brilliant.

I sent you an email, I'll have a look at it all for you since I live in Bolton, and see if it isn't something simple before you go spending lots more money. Numb-nuts replied to crow's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Try one of the Night Devil domes from RexCCTVInstallation.com If you can't find them PM me for their current URL The unit has great all round performance with minimal setting up and should be around £150-£160. Ultra high resolution WDR Sens Up and all the features you'd expect for that money. -

Burglars, Smile you're in a Bait House

What a shame you guys outside UK can't see the BBC I player. It was one of the most interesting things I've seen in a LONG time. In one scene the suspect is being arrested on the street and receives a phone call from his girlfriend trying to tell him police are looking for him TOO BLOOMING LATE DARLIN' I have to say that there was one suspect that they could not prove beyond a doubt because of the absence of the smart water on his clothes or body. In such circumstances, I would rather see the suspect given the benefit of the doubt rather than convict him on the incomplete evidence. The other circumstance was that his record of crime was very petty crime like shop lifting and it couldn't be shown that he is a prolific burglar. Yes it could have been his first burglary but then if it were it'll have scared the living cr@p out of him and it will probably be a long while before he tries it again. No conviction, but perhaps still a result don't you think. The BBC do that because they want to sell the program to other television networks, Would you buy something that is freely available no charge? There must be a way around it ? -
Very Interested In the History of CCTV
Numb-nuts replied to emholic's topic in General Analog CCTV Discussion
The uk has a reputation for embracing technology. Marconi was sent packing in many countire before he arrive in the UK who being a seagoing nation Britania ruling the waves and all that his invention was embraced wholeheartedly and the UK has the highest number of cameras per head of any other European state. But I don't think it did start here I think it was the Nazis in Germany that developed the first CCTV to watch and monitor their rocket program. Anyone know anything about this? -
Good advice, dome cameras are more discrete in hotels but there will be times where a body camera overrides the look of the camera in favour of function. I make a point to have vandal resistant domes in all public spaces.

Probably try a 6mm fixed lens Foscam. It would bring the car closer. Try Ebay for Foscam and find model FI8904W If you don't see the 6mm lens model, contact the seller to see if they can sell you one with 6mm lens. Remember fitting it outside, you will need to enclose the connections in a IP65 or IP66 junction box to keep them protected from poor weather and then the camera is wireless too so you won't have connect it to your router using a CAT5 patch lead although you will need one to set the IP address of your camera The instructions are good on that camera. You can expect to pay about £65.00 I saw one with 6mm lens item no 280553022340

If you want just one camera you could buy an IP camera which it is fairly easy to connect to your PC. They usually come with software and id they don't you can get free software very often online that will record to your HDD. Got such situations you can buy a Foscam IP camera and use software called Vitamin D for free when it's the first camera. More than one you start paying a licence fee. Also it works on PC or Mac. The thing to watch out for is if the camera has infra red LEDs, it will need installing outdoors as after dark the LEDs will operate and reflect off the window into the lens. I'd like to suggest you visit a local supplier specializing in networking if thats feasible or a computer supplier that has IP cameras in stock. I can't recommend anyone because for all I know you might live in downtown Timbucktu and don't know which of the cars is yours the near ones or the far ones so can't recommend a lens size either. ( a rough guess might be 6 mm for a close view of the car always supposing you can ensure you always get the same space otherwise 3mm or so) The foscam can be ordered with 6mm or 3.5 mm lens I think. They give value for money but aren't the best. Vivotec are great but more expensive but again compatible with Mac and Win-dowz

Do/Would you display a Video Security sign?
Numb-nuts replied to Firefighter's topic in General Digital Discussion
The aim should be to deter thieves rather than capture the evidence against them. I think your signs are a desirable and necessary part of your CCTV scheme. You have gone by your intuition and experiences and you should trust that. A deterrent is no good unless the potential thief knows about it, lets face it some of these thieves are so stupid they may not know there is CCTV so make sure they know. If someone is going to attempt a break in, them they do so because they think they can, if they know the chance of getting caught is high, they will often go to the next house. Beware of the dog notices are a good idea too even if you have no dog, even crooks would think twice about tangling with a dog even if they can't see one. If thieves think they can they will, unless they think there is a prospect of getting caught or hurt. -
I once went in to see a re-install and I criticized the existing install badly to the customer. I later found out it was he that had installed it himself. How embarrassing is that? Now I try not to criticize other's work as I think it makes ME look unprofessional, however sometimes it is so tempting to burst out laughing. In this forum it's okay. The only time I discuss the existing work is if it is SO FLAKY that I just cannot risk intervening without disrupting the rest of the systems wiring. Then I have to advise the customer that any extra work as a result of the existing wiring being disturbed, is chargeable. You should be able to go in and do work without disturbing the existing wiring. I want to add that the majority of times I am asked to do fault finding or corrective work, the standard of installion is very good, and it's possible to learn from other people's method of work.

How to combine local & remote setups in a single interface.
Numb-nuts replied to nuvo's topic in Computers/Networking
I have a prospective customer that requires thii sort of setup, He has one existing 4 camera system in a shop and wants another 16 camera system in his other shop. He wants to watch both from his office at home. Do both DVRs have to be the same brand? What software could I use at his office to combine both feeds and to allow control and recording? Some suppliers offer free CMS software but it nly works with their own brand so they say is that so? I don't want to supply a replacement DVR if it's not necessary as I believe in doing the best by a client. -
Two Cameras with using baluns on cat5e

See if there might be a problem with the output from your PSU. Swap it with another known good one. -
Can you advise a balun? Baluns, Connectors or the Cold
Numb-nuts replied to PaulsonLaw's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I doubt they are baluns and without baluns your lucky to get a viewable signal over any sort of distance. Those look like they are just adaptors and serve no other function and their cost might give you a clue. You can buy pairs of individual baluns for about £1.99 or more on ebay and they are perfectly good basic passive devices. You might find them cheaper but not much. -
It's been one of those days, bit of a blog really!

I went to install a 8th camera at a livery stables today, and hell, I was up to my knees in horse-crap. I started about 10:30 as the location is open to the hills and 08:00 would be way too cold to be up a ladder here in Greater Manchester. Not only that, but I had to take my tools to the location in a wheelbarrow that had previously been used to transport horse-doings. I finally understand the advantage of having PC based cards, being at camera 8 another card can be added when more cameras are required. Quite a good option for some clients. I hadn't quite cottoned on to this point previously. I also had to be extremely sensitive about the way I proceeded as horses are quite skittish and can kick and buck if they get alarmed by something like a ladder or a masonry drill or even hammering. Fortunately we had no incidents whatever and some gee gees even came over to sniff my tools out of curiosity I suppose. I didn't manage to finish since the light was against me and frankly I was dog tired. It took me a while also to figure out the wiring installed by the original installer. The wiring went to several outbuilding and there were also several distribution points. Obviously the LAST one was where I found a free channel. This was incidentally the first job I took my new van to and it didn't let me down at all I have new shelves fitted in the back to store stuff, I haven't figured out what goes where just yet but I will. All in all I am shattered but consider this a bad day so far as progress is concerned. I have installed the same camera set-up before and managed as many as five in a single day unfortunately due to the nature of this stables and not being familiar with the DVR PC system I still didn't finish running the camera wiring to the distribution point. I have to return and finish that tomorrow. Incidentally, some of the cable run has to run along an overhead wire and it would be impossible to get a scissor lift or a hiab bucket lift to operate safely so I an being hoisted up in a digger bucket. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT AT ALL! I will certainly have earned my money on this job. -
Really I would have thought that this would be a question of how much recording time you require and how much power the DVR and camera(s) require. The idea of using batteries and a trickle charger is not new by any means. I assume the areas have absolutely no ambient light so infra red may be the nigh-time answer as even low light cameras require some light. The IR is going to consume a fair bit of current on top of the cameras but not as much as floodlights which I think would probably not suit your needs anyway. You will have to ensure that you have way enough recording capacity too all of which is going to affect the trickle charge and battery capacities required. You would need to get advice from someone that has done this a couple times before. I only install in built up areas and while I have some experience in farms and remote locations I doubt I could advise you how to proceed. I have just pointed out the areas I think you will need to consider.
