Not Ethernet communication light on either on the switch - just POE. It's either bad cable or fried camera. I suspect the former. will know in 10 hours or less

Thanks all. It sounds like it's likely to be how I wired the first new connector. I cut the original unknown end off and wired it per T568B, but it did the same thing, so I'm guessing I flipped the original connector. I'm using a EZ-RJ45 Crimp tool which has been pretty brainless when I made other cables. The only thing I can see that I may have done wrong is flip the RJ45 when I put in the wires. Too dark out now to take care of it, so I'll have to wait until morning to do some debugging. If I had just checked it before I climbed a ladder and "made it permanent", it would have worked fine.

Thanks Shockwave, good points. Looks like I lucked out on all accounts for my spot of choice. Outside my office (which has a ton of white noise already), going into some wood fascia of a 100+ yr old house. There's a closet on the other side. Unless they remodeled that closet, it's likely uninsulated. If it's like the wood inside the house, it will be hard as a rock (under 10 layers of paint). What are your thoughts on a corner bracket about 15 to 20' off the ground? It overlooks my garage, side of the house, our outdoor parking area, my kids play area, and would look down the length of the driveway towards the street. I'd prefer to just put it on the backside of the house so that it's less of an eyesore, but that seems like I'm wasting 90 degrees of potential scanning range. I'm not going to stick it on a post, so a full 360 is out. I could put it on the detached garage which would allow it to see the entire back of the house, but I'd have to dig a trench, etc. I have some other fixed IP cameras covering entrances to the house. Anyone else who is a DIY and happens to be reading this, look at the preceding post for the picture. This baby is NOT small, but it should be fun!

It got cold here in Ohio this winter. I don't think we hit 30 below, but I had a Swann go purpleish and non-functional at night. It was fine once it warmed up. Another one (Lorex) that was more exposed was fine through the winter. I consider the Swann and Lorex interchangeable, but... I have another Lorex (the exposed one mentioned above) that is down after a squirrel attack. Still trying to figure out if it was the camera or my replacement cabling.

Here's a picture of the camera with a tape measure - sorry, cell phone in low light, so ... Might be a while before I have sample video up.

A few weeks back a rodent or toothed bird decided to chew through my cat6 cable that ran to one of my Lorex IP bullet cams (the Costco flavor). I finally got a chance to pull the remaining cable, cut off the end, put a new RJ45 connector on it and hook it up. Of course, I silicon wrapped it, fastened the wire to the wall, and put the ladder away before I tested it. The SADP utility isn't seeing it, although the IR lights are on - it's drawing power from the POE switch. I checked the other end of the cable as it was premade and it looked like it was using T568B. I'm not sure which wires POE runs over and I think my Cisco switch would complain. Any ideas? Dead camera but shorted so the IR lights still come on ? Is that possible? I've pulled the power on it a few times to see if it would reboot, but nothing so far. Thanks, Mark

I'm a dig security camera noob. I've been running Blueiris for about a year and it is very tuneable for motion and scheduling. Very few false positives for me. Generally, I only get spammed when I am experimenting with schedules and forget to set it back to my default schedule, Maybe the lorex NVR has scheduling, but for example, I have my front door camera over looking at street as well as my front porch. During the day,the schedule masks out the street area so I only get email from people on the porch. At night, the street is unmasked so I can see any vehicle activity. I think bblue iris has a trial period and its relatively cheap anyway. The expensive part is the PC and poe switch. Mark

Well, the camera arrived. Gosh, it's big. For some reason I had this image in my head of something more like a 2" dome camera hung from a support. The housing itself is 8" in diameter, so it's just a little bigger than a 2" dome (sarcasm). It will be a day or two before I can hang it and get some imagery out of it. When I think about the tech in a PTZ camera, I'm amazed at how inexpensive they've become. So, stupid installation question - what does one do with a 3" machine screw/lag bolt that has a removable sheath around it and a nut and washer (hey, keep it clean)? Is that for pole mounting? Even then, I'm trying to imagine how it works... I guess if there was an opposing plate the bolts would be useful.

Thanks Buellwinkle. Doh, shoulda got the Dahua. Under a time crunch to get one up, so will likely just eat the $ difference. I was thrown off by being unable to google a PTZ 1080p IP camera at this price. I wonder if we'll see some price drops on this at Costco in the future.

Anyone have any experience with this camera (QCN8014Z)? I'm planning to use it with BlueIris. It appears to have a color and b&w mode. Well, in my infinite wisdom and ever searching need to protect network devices from non-existent outside peeping Toms, I changed the passwords on my Swann and Lorex IP cameras (using BlueIris, not the Lorex DVR). It's just been just long enough (30 seconds for me usually) that I can't remember what I was thinking when I came up with the password. Is there a way to hard reset the camera (esp remotely since otherwise I've got some ladder climbing to do)? I'm hoping the password is going to come to me in a moment of divine insight... My Hiks have the build date in the serial number. If you go to the SN page, you'll get some variation of this - mine is a vendor SN, not OEM Hikvision, but the Hiks are the same, I believe: KBU320120130607CCRRxxxxxxxxx The first part is the model number, and the bold part is the manufacture date. Look for the 2013! Thanks! I'm in for a 06/25 set and was told (based on the pictures I posted) that I have the old dome with the IR bleed. I do have the round ethernet connector. Just for reference for anyone else checking things out...

Mine have the round Ethernet plug and were considered the old style (back on page 3 or 4 of this thread)... Not sure if we're 100% understanding old vs new tho because I thought I read another thread suggesting I was looking at the wrong aspect of the camera.
