Does anyone know of a swipe card system that would allow they employee to push a button, either in or out and swipe their card or tag and record the time and date? If anything just a simple system that would record the time and date of each swipe and store it on a computer?

So my question to everyone is where do you buy your cameras? What I am finding is my customers just want the cheapest camera they can get and usually want to spend about 1000$ and get 4-8 cameras + DVR and run them usually 300+ ft. For me this has usually meant they are fine settling with a DIY kit from someone like Q-See or Night Owl. This means I havent had a chance to buy any really cool cameras or lenses or anything, and was wondering what are your guys favorite places to buy your cameras and DVR's?

Can anyone suggest any Day/Night outdoor dome cameras, I can find lots of bullet cameras for outside operation but am having trouble finding dome cameras for outdoors that I can get shipped to Canada. Any help would be great, manufactures, websites anything.

Hey guys, am looking for a decent wireless IP camera for a client, want to be able to record for a couple months with about 4 cameras, will most likely need to indoor/outdoor cameras, I dont have much experience in picking a wireless camera though and am looking for any solutions or suggestions. Looking for 4 cameras at about 200$ a camera top end not looking for anything overly crazy or overly long viewing distance just decent picture and recording.

Even if I drop an access point to each floor on a seperate router dedicated to the cams there isnt enough bandwidth for 4 cameras? This would be a home use and I am aware that I need power at each location although the client still wants to go wireless, although everything is right above a unfinished basement and fishing wire would be easy, may try to convience the client not to go wireless then. And soundy what does WDS stand for? Never heard of it or its simply slipped my mind.

This may be a noob question but here it goes, if I run IP cameras am I still limited to the 300ft limitation of your standard UTP cable as you are in a networking environment or am I able to go further without data loss, and if so how much further? Ideally I want to be able to keep my switch in the front office and run throughout my warehouse, some distances are about 500-600ft.

So I am just starting out and already have the basic tools crimpers cutters strippers compression tools drills the works, but I am curious as to the tools that you guys bring on the job site with you or just dont leave home without when doing an installation. So lets hear it what do you pack in your toolbag?

Thats what I thought and I am aware that the POE switch has to be the one the camera is plugged into, so for runs longer then 300ft would you recommend just implementing multiple switches or repeaters or another option?

I ran into a problem similar to this the other day at a clients site, check and make sure the BNC connectors are securely attached, they had been playing with theirs and just inserted them back in without twisting them, making it so any time I touched a wire cameras would come and go. Also check the wires going into the baluns and make sure they are in all the way to, might be a cable is being pulled on or something and has caused it to be pulled out slightly. If all else fails remove the KVM and make due with a software VNC program

Are you sure they are actually dead? I would have someone with some computer experience check them to see if they can still be used, if not drive a nail through them and chuck them.

I have heard you can provide power to your cameras over ethernet as well as video, if I only use 2 wires for video and split the remaining six into 3 and 3, can someone explain how this is done?

Sorry I should have chosen my words more carefully, what I was referring to was providing the power over the UTP cable, which I know understand the concept.

Does anyone know where I can get a motherboard that has a built in DVR so I dont have to purchase a DVR card. A motherboard that has the BNC connectors built in, I have seen them before but cant find a place to buy one, looking for one for my customer, only need the motherboard I can get everything else myself. I have posted an image of something like I am talking about.

Can you suggest a backplane card that will connect via PCI-e or ribbon? I know I could do with an insert card from say geovision but would rather have a card or motherboard that has the BNC like the picture, I will look at the system at my work has a motherboard that has some sort of BNC backplane card inside it.

You can not port forward on a hub, I think you have confused hub with router, a hub will do nothing other then broadcast traffic, whereas a router can be used to route traffic around. Set a static IP address on your DVR (will keep it from changing on you) then port forward incoming traffic from your external IP address to the internal IP address of the DVR on the network and the media port of your DVR.

you have to use port forwarding to tell the router what to do with an outside connection to the dvr, port forward any dvr traffic to the media port for the DVR so when you access it remotely the traffic will be directed to the media port by the router. For this you will require your external IP address which you then tell your router to forward from that address on port 80 to the dvr's ip address on its media port.

Sounds like an activeX problem or a java applet make sure you have both these enabled and that any security settings arent blocking these, and make sure you are going in over a media port, by default you are probably going in over port 80 if you are just typing in the IP address of the system. As for DHCP and Static go static on the DVR so the address does not change this may save you a headache latter.

You are trying to set up a VPN on an internal network? You must have a switch or router or modem or something somewhere? You are going to have a hard time keeping track of an IP address with a 4G stick. How does your pc get a network connection? To access from the outside you have to port forward to the machine that you are trying to access, and Im going to assume you have a dynamic IP address which means you will need DDNS to keep track of it for you or to tie it to a URL or something. When you say VPN I think you mean a bridged connection? Can you explain your setup a little more, why not just plug the DVR into an ethernet port, or does it not have one in which case I doubt it will support the 4G USB card. Can you explain a little more and I will try to sort it out for you? It is completely doable just need more info.

Check to make sure your security settings arent blocking an activeX control attempting to run or a java script or applet of some sorts, sounds like it might be your problem, are you able to try with firefox or chrome or any other browser to see if it works? This will help determine if it is the computer or a browser setting.
