  1. That is a useful tester for IP stuff, but you will almost certainly not be able to see images from IP cameras thru this tool. Generally what I use it this: http://www.veracityglobal.com/products/ip-camera-installation-tools/pointsource.aspx For aiming, this little do-dad is quite handy too but you can do it a few different ways. Either way you need a laptop or a tablet with an ethernet port. Windows tablets seem to be the most prolific. http://www.veracityglobal.com/products/ip-camera-installation-tools/pinpoint.aspx

    cctv video multi screen playback

Most VMS systems allow this type of thing. I don't recall if Blue Iris has this option or not... anyone confirm or deny this for me? What brand are your cameras?

    cctv remote viewing problem

You need a wireless bridge or a video game adapter. Do a search on here, it has been discussed a few times and I know that links to actual products have been posted in the past.
  4. I have used Paxton, Isonas, Galaxy, Bosch and DAQ stuff for access control. DAQ actually has a new thing called Entrowatch that it pretty excellent. If you have never heard of DAQ it is because they were too busy protecting things like the Pentagon and Army bases to mess with advertising. Here is the system I am referring to: http://entrowatch.com/us/
  5. Just a safety tip... never, ever, ever, ever, ever put a ladder against one of those aluminum poles!
  6. I have seen many cases where the DVR does not understand how to deal with the router and it either fails or reports the wrong address (it will report it's internal non-routable IP, instead of the public IP) . It is always easiest to put the DDNS info in the router and just make sure the port forwarding is correct.

    Need help catching illegal dumpers

Wow if that one on DX is as good as the specs state that is a GREAT deal! The only consideration on that is the lens. You will want to have that camera within 20 feet of them to get a good detail on them and their truck. I would get two or three of them and set them at different viewing angles to mitigate the possibility of headlights screwing up the image. You could go get those green metal pickets from Tractor Supply and mount the camera to that just about anywhere you want. Camouflage it however you see fit and you are off to the races.

    Frame Rate Questions

The real answer is that unless there is fast movement (faster than a human running) 7 frames a second is more than adequate for nearly all use cases. The other factor I generally take into consideration is the are being viewed. If it is an extremely small space (less than 15 feet wide typically), I might opt for a higher frame rate just to catch any super fast movement.
  9. This is cool, I generally prefer to use cable clamps like this: The only thing about these is that you need to put tension on the cable with a come-along, so it is not for everyone.

    The Ultimate dashcam

I am quite confused, what was being asked here? If you are looking for dashcam options, that depends on what you are looking to accomplish. Do you want just a basic video system? GPS? Blackbox functions? Recording while parked?
  11. is there a panel in there to protect the camera/ wires from the mailman?
  12. You could look at something like a Louroe system too, they do both good audio and surveillance.
  13. The cameras have 3.5mm jacks so why not just get an RCA to 3.5mm adapter cable and input your nice microphones into the camera?
  14. Can you post screen shots of your menus? I am not familiar with this model.

Dash Camera catches me whacking a dumb deer

This is my favorite new mirror mounted version.
  16. You might try contacting another dealer and see if they have that data: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=215915275095147312592.0004b88901119195de903&hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=m&ll=33.957648,8.140848&spn=57.308603,211.756969&source=embed&dg=feature

Dash Camera catches me whacking a dumb deer

I just installed a 2 channel (front and back) dashcam in my car as well. Glad you are ok, because those deer strikes are a crap shoot! I will have to try an export on mine and see how it presents. When I am using the viewing software it shows speed and GPS coordinates. That has actually made me stay closer to the speed limit because I don't want some insurance wonk to tell me that speeding caused the problem and deny coverage. What kind of dashcam did you choose? This is the one I am using: http://www.urive.co.kr/english/products/urive_shotgun.html There is also a pretty active dash cam forum found here: http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/

    Finger print

Yeah iris scanners work far better and price wise they are a tiny bit more but nothing crazy. Why not just use an access badge though? How many people are you trying to do this with and are you concerned with badge sharing or did you just not consider that?

    ISC West 2014 - who's going?

Not sure yet, we may have a major project starting at the same time. Right now I am registered, but not planning on going.
  20. What is wrong with it?
  21. Oh man, I wish I had known the angle of that illumination on my first answer. Yes your IR must be at or very near (within 5 degrees) the same angle as the lens for the very reasons you figured out.
  22. I came across this today and thought it needed to be shared here immediately. Mods: This seems like an excellent sticky post or maybe something to add to the LINKS in the sidebar. http://zeecure.com/tutorials/the-ultimate-list-of-free-video-surveillance-tutorials/#
  23. How far is the house from the mailbox? Is it possible that you are simply not getting enough beam concentration to be useful? I have used that LTS illuminator before with great success, but only up to about 50 feet.
  24. Good deal, glad you got it all taken care of!

    WD Announces Purple Surveillance Line

This is only true is you have a single disc system. It has been proven then in multi-disc systems that not only are there vibrations, but harmonics generated by multiple spinning discs that can shorten the lifespan of the entire cluster. That was of the biggest reasons for enterprise class drives. You are correct though that in a single disc system a "regular" drive could last several years without incident, but the cost differences are not large enough to justify the risk in my opinion. I want to see these purple drives with a DETAILED spec sheet up against the current enterprise class and consumer class drives. Is the aural density reduced? How are they dealing with dampening? Is there some special cache used in these? Personally, I will be a happy dude once solid state stuff gets big and cheap enough to use in surveillance equipment but we are a long way from that right now.
