The simple answer is a lot more money and different cameras. -
WANTED: CCTV and general IT salesperson (Hagerstown, MD)
ssnapier replied to ssnapier's topic in Test Bench
I am on the technical side of the house so those types of details are not really my lane. I would recommend sending in your resume and see how it plays out. I know that the last sales person was on some sort of split salary /commission thing, but I do not know the specifics. Sorry. -
I have looked at a few analog DVR's lately, but since I don't mess with these alot, what is the "SPOT" connector for? My guess was that it was for displaying a single "important" channel, but I could not find anything in the documentation. Can someone please educate me?

CCTV camera needed for close motion with svideo out
ssnapier replied to digitalrust's topic in General Digital Discussion
Is this indoor or outdoor? How far away is the mounting point you have in mind? Is there ever a possibility that you might need IR light or will it always be lit with visible light? The resolution of that projector can handle anything from a plain jane 540TVL analog camera all the way up to a 1.3MP camera, but the other question that springs to mind is do you intend to record any of this stuff? -
I like the ubiquiti line... and they will only get better with time.

Need help optimizing wireless signal
ssnapier replied to nickCR's topic in General Digital Discussion
I am a radio nerd, so I am always quite aware of my signal strength. I want all of my signals to be above -65dbm and I could only achieve that with stronger gain antennas. The thing about the laptop not getting back to the router is incorrect also. Higher gain works both ways, it is more sensitive on the receive side as well. If the laptop links to the router that is automatically a two way link, because the laptop basically has to "tell" the router that they are talking, so you are good to go. -

Need help optimizing wireless signal

I would run multiple repeaters or just set up an different router/SSID on each floor and run those three routers back to a switch near your modem (hard wire). Cinder blocks and elevation make sure a very nasty combination when it comes to propagating a nice strong signal. Line of sight is your best friend, but in the real world line of sight turns into simply finding the "thin spots" in your walls, couches, doors, etc. and learning the best way to make it work. I live in a 3200 sq. foot, two story house that was built in the 50's, with hard core plaster walls, a finished basement and 100% brick construction and some STUPIDLY thick wooden beams and base material for the floors. My router is on the main floor and I have two repeaters upstairs and one in the basement. I also swapped out the stock antennas for a higher gain model and turned off the 5Ghz side of the router because that simply would not get me any decent signal. -
Thank you for this. It really helps to know what others are using. Free isn't always better, but I am a programmer and the 6 lines it took to write the script was far simpler than any form to fill out to get free (or paid) service. Thank you all so much! Care to share these 6 lines of code with us?

I think I paid $75 bux for two or three years of the "super awesome" level at Dyn.com. There are a lot of options available to you for your money. You also have an expectation of uptime when you pay for it so I am fine with that tiny sum of money to make sure I have service when I want it. Free is dang sure not always better!

DDNS is only required if you have a dynamic public IP address. If you are 100% positive that your IP address is static, DDNS is really not required at all. As with all things like this, please make sure you take all appropriate security precautions to limit your internal network's exposure to the rest of the world.

This is not entirely related, but I figured I would mention it anyway. The only time I have issues with wireless with CCTV is when it is attached to a PTZ. There is always a very annoying delay...

I wonder how this will affect CCTV - 7Gbps wireless

That AirFiber thing looks VERY interesting! Too bad it is not FIPS 140-2 validated... I cannot use it for the Government... -
Nice! I was just reading your write-up on CP World and came here to cross post when I saw that you had beat me to it! " title="Applause" /> " title="Applause" /> " title="Applause" />

You have a link for more info? EDIT: disregard... I found it: http://americanvideoequipment.com/icheck.html

That would require facial recognition, and there is basically no way to do that effectively on a budget. I would think that a simple picture of each check writer would be far simpler and cheaper. If you really want to do it with facial recognition, the cheapest option I can think of would be a 3VR system but that is only part of the problem. In order for a system like this to really be effective it needs a database of faces to work from, so if you are trying to catch folks without a good database photo to base the analysis on, it is just not going to work. From this point forward you could easily snap a picture of the check cashers to build up that database, but for those who have already come and gone... not good.

I have purchased and used Engenius bridges with great success. They claim to be PoE, but it is a non-standard 24 volt PoE so not really. Here is a link: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0329978 I have also used MicroTik, FluidMesh, and Fortress stuff too, all of which are excellent and very robust options. Fortress is WAY too much for anyone except the Government though.

Why would you use non-plenum wire in a household environment? The risk to humans in the area (in case of fire) is simply not worth it in my opinion.
-
I would stick with Plenum rated... you should probably be a bit more specific though. Coax, UTP, Unicorn Hair?? What are you putting on either end of this wire???

Need help identifing DVR for software firmware updates
ssnapier replied to not1ofthepack's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Is there anything on screen that might help? Is there a help menu or an "about" or anything like that where you might get a clue? Sometimes they have a website listed in one of those places too. -
There are a lot of places where those won't work or you simply cannot swing a hammer. Personally I find those to be frustrating, but I am a little clumsy...

Can I turn Sony EVI-D70 into a netcam?
ssnapier replied to JacFlasche's topic in Computers/Networking
An Axis 241S would be perfect for this, and they can be purchased just about anywhere. You can also use the PTZ functions with it. EDIT: No clue about the vendor, but this is a great price: http://tjmax.winbootsugg.com/top-quality-by-axis-241s-video-server-etrax-100lx-100mhz-32mb-ram-8mb-flash-memory-1-x-bnc-ntsc-pal-electronics_p5110.html?offer_id=B007JY4W1I -
I use a company called HostPC.com, and I STRONGLY recommend them. I have used them for almost 10 years now and I have zero complaints. Great prices, killer support, and very fast servers. I have 6 websites hosted there and I use the FTP for backup on 4 cameras right now without a hiccup. There are also a ton of options in their "installatron" that will allow you to build out all kinds of things for a website if you ever decided to do that (forums, blogs, photo sharing, newsletters, shopping carts, etc.)

I am not familiar with this, what are you referring to?
