Well, carrying this premise forward what would stop you from mounting cameras and illumination on your mailbox? If the idea is to catch plate numbers, that is just about the only way to get low enough and close enough. Either that or you will need a pretty big zoom to get them from your house. At is VERY tough to catch a number plate at night, good luck!

I am a big fan of QNAP as well, but I happen to have a nice Nuuo NVR for sale in the classifieds. PM me and I will make a deal with you to get you under what you are currently looking at spending.

ssnapier replied to Operandi's topic in Computers/Networking
We use a company called 8x8 for our VoIP stuff and I love them! Pretty easy to setup, very robust equipment and all of the options you can think of. Here is a link if you want to check them out: http://www.8x8.com/ -

900 Mhz wireless security... is there any?
ssnapier replied to ssnapier's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Good info, and I may put it to use on future projects. This particular job is on a military base though and FIPS 140-2 validations is a baseline requirement. -
900 Mhz wireless security... is there any?
ssnapier posted a topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
I am looking at a few 900 Mhz wireless systems and I am wondering what there is in terms of security on these systems. I know with wi-fi, I can use things like WPA2 Enterprise and my own custom certificates to make it pretty secure. I have also used FIPS validated equipment to add even more security, but the way I understand the 900 meg stuff it is not quite as sophisticated. Am I wrong about that? -
What are the legalities of recording audio along with video?
ssnapier posted a topic in General Digital Discussion
I have had wondered about this for quite some time. Are you legally allowed to record audio on private property? Better yet, what about parking lots and cameras that might see or hear public spaces? Also, does it matter if signs are posted? Yes I fully realize that I am not getting actual legal advice from you guys, but I thought it might be an interesting discussion topic. -

Yup, lawyers will be asked for sure and it turns out that Maryland is extra crazy about this stuff than most states... awesome... -

Yup, he was very up front about that, and I read it on their website. We would be using their stuff to fill single camera gaps in an existing network so it should be fine if that is what we decide to use. -
ViconNet - opinions?

Has no one used this software? -
I have been asked to take a look at this software, and specifically to make sure it will talk to the IP cameras we use most often (Mobotix, Panasonic PTZ's, Sony PTZ's and Axis). Is anyone here currently using this software, and if so what are your impressions?

I am looking at a FIPS 140-2 (level 2) validated product from AvaLan Wireless out of Alabama. I just got off the phone with one of their people and it seems like they know what they are doing. -
I am planning on attending ISC West in Vegas next March. Supposedly that is the larger of the two events.

I have been using 1 and 2TB drives for a while now, but I am not so sure I trust drives much bigger than that. Do you guys think that a 3TB SATA drive could be reliable enough to run RAID 5 or RAID 10 in a critical data environment? I have to say that 2TB drives made me a bit nervous at first too, and we did have a few failures but overall they have proven a solid option. EDIT: I am specifically talking about SATA III drives with a 6GB/s transfer rate.

Wow... these floods in Thailand are really screwing with hard drive prices! I can only order 15 at a time, and the price is changing DAILY! The issue is that I need 86 of them!
-
Ok, I will be using the TS-EC1279U-RP from QNAP. I have used their gear in several installs and they have proven quite reliable. This particular device is an enterprise class NAS device and the hard drive I am looking is on their compatibility list.
-
Well that brings up another interesting question. What value do you place on the compatibility lists from a manufacturer? I have never considered how much reliability testing they do before that put a device on those lists... hmmm.

Hitachi has a 5 platter, 7200 rpm, 3tb drive that seems to be quite robust. It is approved by QNAP and I think by Drobo for use in their enterprise class NAS devices, and I like the way they have kept the density down by adding an extra platter, it just makes more sense to be than cramming things into 4 platters. Here is a data sheet for the one I am looking at: http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/EC6D440C3F64DBCC8825782300026498/$file/US7K3000_ds.pdf

This is EXACTLY what I needed, thanks!

We have all seen the Hollywood version of this stuff, but what is the deal when it comes to using this stuff in the real world? How close does the subject need to be, are there minimum resolutions? How tough would it be to catalog people... let's say employees, or contractors... and setup alerts if one of those people entered an area? With all of that said, what software/hardware gets the job done and what should I avoid? The 3VR stuff looks very slick, but I think I would like to look at something that I could add to an existing system instead of replacing it with an entire 3VR solution.

Can't you just use a POE extractor on your existing CAT 6? That should provide you everything you need to get it running.

PTZ Control/ Priority options with multiple locations
ssnapier posted a topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
I am currently doing an install that will have viewing stations at 4 different places across the campus. What are my options to define or control who has PTZ control? We are using MxControl Center since the majority of the cameras are mobotix, but for the PTZ's in the mix how can I define which stations have priority, or can seize control? I already know that MxCC is not the ideal setup for this, but I'm stuck with it unless a small miracle happens,so I am open to your suggestions. I have even considered hiring a programmer to write some custom code for me, but even that gets tricky. -

That function is built in to your DVR, correct? That is my problem, the VMS being used here (Mobotix Control Center) does not appear to accommodate this feature. -

The silence here is not a good sign... I am currently looking at Omnicast and i-cathcer as possible soutions, just have to convince the customer that they need to pay for it...
