Well it depends on where/ how you are installing it. Will there be a high likelihood of vandalism? Will the cable be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods? Are there any aesthetic purposes that might call for a cleaner look?

It could be the power for the IR's (total guess) Is there any indication of a brand name on the inside? You might be able to track down a pinout that way.

If a camera comes with IR's built it, it will see the IR from external units without an issue. I am not aware of any camera that has a night mode that is not IR sensitive. I would also be looking at cameras that have varifocal lenses on them (2.8 - 12mm is typical) so that you can adjust the field of view to get as much or as little of what you need in the shot. Bear in mind that wide shots look awesome and work well for situational awareness but provide very little detail beyond a few feet. If you have a specific area you want to see you must be willing to make a choice. Either mount a second camera for the wide shot or just forego the wide shot altogether to ensure that you have usable video should it ever be needed as evidence or a crime. Personally I am in favor of the two camera solution, but I am a bit of a CCTV nerd so I tend to go overboard. I have a situation with two 32 channel DVR's running with loops to provide redundant copies of each other. I now have been asked to provide PTZ control to 6 cameras using Pelco-D. Has anyone here ever just split the wiring and taken it to two DVR's and did it work??? We also have an RS-485 hub that we use for all sorts of stuff, so I have a second option. I am just curious to see if anyone has tried this and what the results were?

I am thinking that I will diodes on one DVR just to keep the traffic flow from getting weird. I am going to try this just as soon as I get done with my current install.... more to follow in a week or so!

Is the green turned all the way down in your color or hue settings?

I have gotten away with a 400 foot run using quality CAT-6 cable several times. That 328 foot thing is a theoretical limit, and while I am not a fan of going past it there are some limited cases where you just don't have a choice. Bear in mind though that as the cable ages you may start to see some dropped frames on your video... I am talking 3-5 years from now.

There are several cameras this do this. The one that has been doing it the longest is probably Mobotix, but I would say all the major players are on board now. Axis, Avigilon, Sony, Panasonic, Hikvision, etc. are all selling cameras that will do exactly that.

Honestly, only one of the two easiest options I can recommend will have pan tilt functions, but they should both work for you. If you are comfortable setting up port forwarding, then buy a Foscam wifi PTZ camera and be done with it. The next option would be to buy 3 or 4 Dropcam cameras and set them at good places around the house that would give them what they want. It would also give you rudimentary security cameras for future use if you want. Anytime I discuss port forwarding on here, I post this same picture just to make sure you are tracking on how port forwarding works. There is no black magic to it, and PLEASE visit portforward.com for directions on how to set up your particular device.

The Cisco Small Business line is excellent at this, and tends to work with most other equipment. I use Netgear stuff too, but generally in smaller projects where I am spec-ing all of the equipment myself. Is everything grounded / bonded properly? The only real advantage to 24VAC is when you have to cover a long distance.

Managed switches can do this, and some of the "Smart" switches have a software interface to do basic functions like that.
