    Some pics from the cameras

That's a lot of trashcans. Is moss overtaking the brick patio or is that from the camera?
  4. I don't see any POE switches on their site I would use... none give power specs and I don't see any gigabit PoE switches. You might be able to get by with their non-poe switches, but I've never used their products. You would have to try them and see. I use a lot of HP switches. I've never gotten any bad gear from Transition Networks either if you're looking for cheaper.

Video Matrix Switcher vs IP Switch

If you're replacing a head end and using existing analog cameras, or for some reason are stuck with analog cameras, then you might need a video matrix switcher. Otherwise, IP all the way is a much better option. ~5 years ago IP cameras and encoders were still prohibitively expensive and the quality wasn't anything near what it is today. As of now, video matrix switchers are legacy and will someday be completely replaced by IP systems. Instead of looping matrix's, video switches, and proprietary dvrs running video walls with expensive video processors, we can now do it with any IP switch, any server from any manufacturer we want for the NVR, and any workstation we want controlling any amount of monitors it's capable of. With IP we eliminate a ton of cost on transmission media (cat5 is cheaper than coax) and save a ton on command center equipment (see previous paragraph). With analog systems the actual cameras are still cheaper than IP cameras, but you can achieve a much better picture with the right IP cam. The price gap is also closing. What are you trying to do?
  6. Thousands, if not more. Soundy had a very bad experience, can't blame him for being a huge Arecont detractor. I've stopped using companies for less. The rest of us have had good luck with them, especially as of late, so put the negative comments in the back of your mind. I prefer the 5mp cams over the 3's and the 2's, especially if looking at a larger area. Have used only a handful of AV8185's but have had good luck with them, great panoramic image.

    Arecont FAIL

With the HSG1-O-W housing it's easy to drill a hole in the side or bottom of the mount with a step drill bit for cable access. We do this often on the outside of industrial buildings so we only need one penetration to cover multiple cameras mounted to a concrete exterior.

    Arecont FAIL

This thread's over a year old. This spring I unboxed 80 Areconts and only had one issue where a screw was below a retaining ring, easily fixable. Overall I bet we're sending <1% back to the factory for out of the box problems, and <3% back for warranty issues in the first year. My only complaints: 1. Their programming tool only let me connect 1 camera a time, which wasn't a huge deal in the office but could be an issue if an electrician installed them all in the field and then we came in to program them after the fact. They do include a CD with the programming utility along with 3 hand tools for adjusting and setting up the camera in every box now. 2. Even with static IPs set and locked, every once in awhile they like to randomly forget their IP. We've had this issue at multiple sites with both Genetec and DVTeL head ends, yet Arecont still claims it's impossible. I still like the cameras. Outside of the IP issue, everything else are minor headaches we get with any manufacturer.
  9. The net5301t I assume? Endura can only use the Pelco-P/D RS-422 protocol and coaxitron. The Speeddome Ultra 8 can do Pelco-P RS-422 or coaxitron. First, try disconnecting the RS-422 and using coaxitron as the setting, you shouldn't need any data wires. If that doesn't work, use Pelco-P at 9600 baud as your protocol, and make sure to set switch 3 on the camera to "7".

Do you seek out the cameras just because?

Typically the camera goes on a light pole or near one, so you can pull power from it, mount a power supply in a service box on the pole or buried below it. For transmission back to a central station you use wireless or trench fiber in. You just need to get the fiber back to a nearby city building or a telco box then it'll ride on some type of network back to the head end. We've done a few campus's and it's really not a big deal, you utilize a lot of existing infrastructure and just distribute everything. It's not like you start from scratch and start pulling cable from 5th & main to 150th & oak or whatever. It's not cheap by most peoples standards, but it's usually not cost prohibitively expensive either, just takes some creativity.

    Whats up with Google

first of all: http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ second of all, try flushing your dns. go to start --> run --> cmd then type: ipconfig /flushdns press enter and try google again.

I assume it all works something like this:
  13. Copper coated aluminum wire? Sounds like a major fire hazard waiting to happen to me... Outside of service poles, aluminum wiring is illegal in most places over here in the US.

    Residential Door Alarm

For something super basic with almost no installation and really cheap, look at the GE 45117. For something more advanced, look at bosch systems.
  15. Run the coax outside the house up and into the attic wherever it's needed. Doesn't need to be inside at all. Cable companies, satellite tv, phone lines, etc. are all done this way.
  16. with some software you could turn your personal computer into an NVR, record all the data from a camera that's simply plugged into your switch on your home network, display it on your monitor, and do whatever else. It's all much easier and much more flexible than an old fashioned specialized DVR with proprietary capture cards in them.

  18. I installed a radioshack one 6-7 years ago for a buddy, he had a stereo upstairs and ran some speakers into his basement and wanted control from his basement. We put the receiver part downstairs so he had something to point the remote at and the repeater part upstairs to blast the signal to the stereo. It all worked well. I couldn't even begin to tell you the brand of what we put in though, and no reviews online look consistent for anything.

Where to hide the DVR ????

Stick it in an attic. No criminal is going to crawl around up there... And if you're worried about them stealing something, hook up a decoy dvr in an obvious place, they'll run off with it thinking they're good to go. A datacenter in Chicago was wiped out maybe a year or two ago now? They rammed a truck into the side of the building to gain access, then along with clearing out a bunch of server racks, they also went into an IT closet or something and swiped the DVR to cover their tracks. Case screams of inside job... so don't tell your ex where you keep this thing.

    DIY camera pole / mast

Do you plan to use motion detection? If so, the structure needs to be very rigid. Otherwise, there's nothing special about most camera poles, and nothing special about the brackets used to attach a camera to a pole. At the very most I'd put in a nema 4x enclosure at the base or below ground for terminations, surge supressors, maybe a power supply, but I doubt you'll even need this.

Reliability of HDD vs Solid State

We've been having alot of SSD's die on us for some reason. There's definitly certain brands to avoid, I don't recall which ones our IT guy mentioned though.

    Need suggestions and advice

You sure she still has liability? As long as there is a fence the kids are climbing over, I think it relieves her of any incident which may happen... might be worth consulting a lawyer and maybe throwing up a few no trespassing signs. Also, guard dog. And snakes in the pool. And sharks with lasers!
  23. Rebadging doesn't matter in the least, you can brand all your cameras with your own company name if you want. Closer you get to manufacturer though, the cheaper it'll be, and more importantly, the more you'll know about the camera. I've used a 48vdc din rail mount power supply from meanwell and altech which were both identical, down to the installation sheets. Since then I've noticed the exact one re-branded as a few other things... still trying to figure out who the real manufacturer is.

It always feels like..... somebodies watchin me....

http://www.pelco.com/sites/global/en/products/camera-solutions/range-presentation.page?p_function_id=9504&p_family_id=10221&p_range_id=2866 doesn't come with the camera as shown in the picture, you put any fixed camera you want on it. only pans and tilts, get a ptz so you can zoom too. we only use these things for thermal cameras now, and even then it's extremely rare.

Be real- Hobby? Necessity? Or both?

Don't know if your dvr supports it, but try setting up trigger alarms to email you when something happens so you don't have to constantly watch and still feel protected and are fully aware of what's going on. People shortcut through my yard all the time (hazard of living on a busline)... not to worried about it. Alarm system will notify me if they try to get inside.
