What Soundy said. Good rule of thumb is always use cat5, doesn't matter if you're doing a stadium or a run across your buddies attic. It's cheaper, its future proofed, and its good to standardize how you do all of your installs (you can focus on cat5 equipment, testers, crimpers, and other tools).

Also only works if you have access to the dhcp servers, not always the case if it isn't your network. You just get a list of IPs you can use, and later on they want a list of MAC's.

Power Supply Suggestion for 16 channel 12VDC
fa chris replied to ulterior_motive's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Either will work just fine. I've had a lot of good luck with altronix, things are pretty much rock solid. The meanwell supply will work too (and be rock solid), but I'd put it in some type of can with terminal strips to break out your circuits. -
When you have 50 cameras plugged into a network you need to set up, decent software is pretty nice to find the camera and assign an IP to it. With Arecont I find I can only connect and set up a few cameras at a time in their software though or it starts assigning the wrong IPs to the wrong cameras... it also often reports the camera model/version wrong until it's been set up and "added to remote unit". I can deal with the quirks, but it seems like a pretty basic thing we're using it for... you'd think they could release a standalone bug free utility to do it better. Also I believe with Areconts, to do any real tweaking to the camera the software takes you to the web interface for it.

Would probably just get stolen, they might accept the challenge. The game camera is a good idea, available anywhere hunting supplies are sold and are now getting pretty cheap.

IP Address it not accessible in Eagleeyes App
fa chris replied to tumza007lnw's topic in General Analog CCTV Discussion
I'm not sure how the eagleeyes app works, but do you need to forward any ports in your router? -
Its fine for an overview, add a second camera with a decent lens and narrow field of view highly focused on the walk area to get recognition. Megapixel cameras are awesome, but can be pricey and I wouldn't necessarily recommend them for existing systems or residential applications. Not even sure any will work with your current DVR or what your expectations are for running new wire.
-
Make sure the port is forwarded properly: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/TG585v8/default.htm set protocol to any, port range 8080 to 8080, translate to 8080, then click add. trigger protocol will be left to any, leave trigger port blank.

Just depends on the system. Usually deals with restrictions, who can set up cameras, who can only view cameras, who can change options on cameras (motion detection, recording, etc.), who can playback saved data, etc.

Whats The Longest RG59 Run (18/2) I Can Get To Power Cameras
fa chris replied to simard's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Video should be fine out to around 600 feet on rj59 (longer actually, but good rule of thumb). 12vdc will be a limiting factor, if the cameras can take 24vac you'd be better switching to a 24vac power supply and then you'll have zero issues with the power runs as well. -
Integrating American Dynamics and Pelco
fa chris replied to Sejjiboy's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
I'm not sure it'll work. You can bring the pelco into a matrix then hook that into the intellex using a rs232 connection. other option is to use a USB module from AD that converts to sensornet, but I'm not sure the pelco PTZ does sensornet. The intellex really has limited options from my experience... they never really considered PTZs outside of the american dynamics realm. -
How to find cat5 / coax already in the ground?
fa chris replied to ljnl's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Metal detector. Or possibly a dowsing rod. -
We have a ton of wall mounted digiops in the field.
-
Should be fine as long as the case goes back on. Ideally we put them in racks, either a standard 19" rack or a wall mount cabinet. Wall mount cabinets aren't exactly small or cheap though. Some DVR's we use are made to be mounted directly to a wall. We've also used wall mount brackets similiar to these: http://www.racksolutions.com/universal-wall-mount.html

I'm sorry if someone has offended you. You're talking to nuts & bolts guys in an emotionless environment, they are calling it like they see it, not being disrespectful. No point in using political maneuvering to sugarcoat something when we can get right down to the issues and limitations of certain equipment and start moving in the right direction by figuring out exactly what your expectations are and what it's going to take to meet those expectations. The advantage to online forums is you'll get very straight very blunt answers because nobody here has any motivation to up sell you. None of us care about what you end up getting, where it's from, or what it costs, we're just trying to help you get what you want. You get to decide if it's financially viable or not for your own personal situation.

I have VideoCAD but have never put the effort into learning it. A lot of manufacturers like Avigilon have decent system design tools available on their sites. Others have spreadsheets which do similar things.

NEW TO FORUM BUT NEED HELP WITH SENSORMATIC SPEED DOME SETUP
fa chris replied to prosinger's topic in Introductions
The ultra vII should do sensornet 485, Manchester, and RS-422, and UTC. That's just the wiring though, the camera also supports about two dozen protocols, which are selected using three address switches (SW1, SW2, SW3) which should be on the back of the camera. What controller? What protocol? I'm guessing it'll work fine, will just be a matter or proper wiring/settings. I have a pdf of the speeddome ultra VII installation & service guide if you'd like me to forward it (free of charge). PM me email address. -
always sign for a berg system, even if you don't have one. It's not going to make your place more appealing, its going to make your neighbors cctv/security system free place more appealing. and that's the entire goal... most criminals look for opportunity, not challenge.

Questions for you PRO CCTV Intallers..?? Pay? Misc? Q n A?
fa chris replied to johnny916's topic in Test Bench
some states/cities/jurisdictions require everything be run in conduit (metal, not pvc). I believe this is the case in chicago, possibly all of illinois. Some spec's/owners require it. Any conduit we do we sub out to an electrician. We sub out the wire pulling and installation on any larger project too, very rarely are our guys pulling 400'. -
Is that an endura system dustmop? How's that working out for you?

Conditioned attic. It's not locked in a box or anything, no offsite storage, but I have considered hiring a tiny ninja with an ex-kgb mercenary sidekick to guard it.

When we're talking about replacing an analog camera with HD-SDI in order to gain a better image using existing cabling we're talking analog infrastructure. The HD-SDI signal should be transparent to the fiber, and there are fiber transmitter/receivers compatible with HD-SDI (though I'm not sure how long they've been on the market, there are multiple options marketed specifically for it). How well does it work? Dunno, makes no sense to me to try using one when so many options are available with IP cams.
-
Why would a GC or an owner accept the project? Here they'd be fired, the install would be ripped out, and the original installer would be back charged for damages and the cost of a new electrical to re install. (Have seen it done twice now... both mom & pop shops who had no business pulling wire.)

Pickpocket passing wallet to accomplice
fa chris replied to Numb-nuts's topic in General Digital Discussion
Looks like a lot of video analytics involved, which is where the hefty price tag comes from. All of the cameras together might cost 16k quid. -
I didn't even know there was an ISC East. Don't be discouraged, ISC West is the big show.
