Indoor camera for outdoor?
jdowning replied to jdowning's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hi Tom, is it possible you could give some examples of some of these IP cameras? thanks a lot jack -
Hi all, I'm looking for some vandal dome CCTV cameras for my premises. I don't want to go for eBay brands but would like decent CCTV cameras and am willing to spend around £100-£140 for one. Is that a suitable enough price to be paying for a good quality camera? What brands should I be looking at and where should I purchase the cameras in the UK. I believe I can't purchase CNB cameras as they use NTFC, not PAL. What site should I be looking at to purchase the cameras? Thanks guys Jack

Hi all, I asked a few questions a while back but I was told conflicting information Here's my wiring diagram at the minute. Note - the cameras will be 12V DC cameras (possibly http://www.buythis.co.uk/open_product.asp?pid=5615&catid=65&offset=0&Orderby=cheap). Wiring diagram: Anyway - have a few questions. 1) What type of balun will there be at the camera end to receive power & video? 2) What equipment will I need in both garages to be able to receive 4x video feeds? 3) What equipment will I need to send these feeds back to the DVR? 4) What equipment will I need at the DVR to receive these feeds so I can plug them into the back of the DVR. 5) If I have a PTZ control on one of these, I'm aware I'll probably need another pair. If I had another pair going from a camera to the garage, how could I further pass this on? Thanks so much. The reason there is cameras going to two different places is that it's a large building and it's quite a pain for it to go all the way back to one positions. Thanks alot Jack

Hi Tom, I don't mean to run 4 video feeds over 1 CAT5 cable. Each camera will have it's own CAT5 cable. For the dome cameras, I'll power them via the one cable if that's possible and for the housed/PTZ cameras, I'll have separate 2 core cable going to the camera & data and video supplied by the CAT5. Is this ok? Cheers Whether a balun is "active" has nothing to do with powering the camera or housing - it just means the balun uses active (powered) circuitry rather than a simple balancing transformer. Whether you can power the IR via Cat5 depends entirely on how much current it draws, how long the run is, and how many pairs you're using for power. If the illuminator draws 2A and you're only using two pairs to run 500', then no... if you can dedicate three pairs to power a camera and 500mA illuminator over 50', then you're golden. Hi there - sorry Soundy, I meant non-IR cameras! Are non-IR cameras better? I want to get a good image & the lighting is pretty sufficient around the building to cope with this. Does it need a lot of light to pick up a good image? Do I go for true day night / digital day night? Cheers Jack

Hi Numb-nuts, my bad... the CCTV camera I used was the only camera that was available to choose... the cameras will either be dome or housed cameras. I wanted to power the cameras via the CAT5 cable. Will most non-IR domes be able to handle this? Runs won't be THAT long. Do I just use one of the active baluns to power the camera as someone mentioned above? Cheers for the link Tom.

You can do that too. I remember explaining this in the other thread - you just have to connect the video pair for each camera to a different pair on the between-building run. You can use crimps, terminal block, BIX block... even solder them and wrap them in black tape, if you want, whatever works to make the connection. My main reason for suggesting the unit I did is that it is ALSO the power supply, so you don't have to worry about extending separate wires from the Cat5 to a power can or wall warts - just terminate each cable with an RJ-45, and plug it in. Use the units I suggested. Or a four-channel power supply. Or a separate "wall-wart" power supply for each camera. Again, it's all a matter or personal preference. Hi Soundy. Thanks so much for your help. I understand now. So just to rectify... If I have a PTZ camera and it's powered locally, I can use one pair for video and that goes via CAT5 to garage. I can use anothe pair for control, bring it back to same garage via CAT5. For the control pair, I can have a seprate CAT5 going back to DVR and terminal block the control for the CCTV pair to the pair going back to office. I then plug this in at RS485 at office? @ljarrald - sorry for not explaining properly. I meant video and power down one CAT5. Also - will the remaining pairs be able to provide 12V?

Hi there Soundy, thanks for your really informative reply. The reason I said conflicting information is as someone I know said I didn't need a balun in the garage, just a terminal block. I'd like to stick to CAT5 Tom as I want to be -future proofed- for IP CCTV. Also - I do have mains power in each of the garages but I thought itd be simpler if I just ran CAT5. Is this ok as all the runs have been done. What power equipment do I need in the garages for the cameras etc and where do these plug into. Cheers everyone!

well people should be polite and ask first if they are going to take a picture OF me. there must be a law that says if a picture has been taken OF me and i ask for it to be erased, it has to be. You need to stop being so paranoid. He posted a thread up about a video that he created scaring children whilst using CCTV. He didn't ask for any questions to be posted on the legality of the footage taken nor should you be interested in that, that's his decision. I highly doubt that a paedophile will choose a CCTV forum to choose their next victims and can highly doubt these individuals can be traced back. It seems to me that the new people in the world are all interested in privacy & laws - take a step back and just enjoy something without getting knit-picky over the regulations and what's in the book. Society was laid back 20+ years ago but now we're being bombarded with 'data protection' and all this crap. Thanks for the video by the way!

Security Camera feud sparks privacy questions

Hi all, Was just wondering if you could guide me whether these are OK cameras & housings to buy. I live in the UK so any suggestions on where to get stuff online would be good. All together, I want to get a 16 channel DVR and was hoping this could be OK. At the moment, I'll be getting a few cameras and then expanding but I'll run through kind of what I want. For all dome cameras, I'd be using: (I'll be using around 7 of these). For more prominent locations where I'd like the cameras to be seen, I'll be using: Along with these housings: For a 16 way power box, I'll be using this and be powering the cameras via CAT5 and the housed ones by individual power: Can anyone please please please give any suggestions / tips on what to do! I'm new to CCTV however I believe it's fairly simple and hopefully I can do it myself. Thanks alot everyone! Jack Also - is an extreme load of light required for these cameras? Thanks, Jack

Can't believe it was that long ago There's a few changes - notably the housing & the body cameras.

4 Camera one Cat 5 Cable and power any one Done? Issues?

I would try and help but I don't know where to start... what language are you speaking?? -
Hi all, I've posted a few threads around here but this is my (hopefully) final thread on which cameras I should choose & which DVR. Note I am from the UK. A nice man emailed me a few days ago when I asked for information on Apollo DVRs and I'd love to go with it but location is a factor Anyway - I want to have a 16 channel DVR. I'm thinking about this DVR. Any opinions? http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/apollo-16-channel-digital-recorders/apollo-hd-16-channel-1000gb-cctv-digital-video-recorders-dvr.html I have around 12 cameras to put in. I don't want infrared on any of them. I need cameras which can show a good quality image even with little lighting even though I'll have good enough lighting in some places. At the entrance, I want a camera with a housing... is this camera OK? http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/genie-body-cameras/genie-cctv-dnr5352-true-daynight-bodied-camera-dual-voltage.html OR http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/57D15.pdf << that camera. The first one's lenses are quite expensive, the second one a bit cheaper. Also - want one housed camera in the car park. I'd prefer to have domes in other cases. I heard 'CNB' was good but apparently no where in the UK supplies them. Any other opinions anyone? Otherwise... I think it's the choice from these domes... can anyone suggest any other ones which can be purchased online from the UK? http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/genie-vandal-domes/genie-cctv-avrcd-5351-29-10mm-0002lux.html http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/informer-vandal-domes/informer-cctv-sony-600tvl-super-hadii-ccd-00003lux-28-12-mp-lens.html Any other good brands which work in low light? Thanks a lot everyone - sorry for bugging. Jack

Please help! Am hoping to buy the cameras tonight. Thanks Jack

Hi all! I am installing a CCTV system for my restaurant. I posted a thread a while back but I didn't really get confirmation of what I need. I own a large building and it's difficult to get wiring to everywhere from one location. In my yard, there's a large garage where around 5 cameras will be going back there. From this garage, I have 5 CAT5e cables running from there to my office in my house nearby (around 10 metres from it). In another part of the building where the car park is, I have 4 cameras which need access to the DVR. What I'm wondering is this: Can I buy 2 x these: [edit by mod-store link removed] Can I put one of these in the garage - plug baluns into the coaxial inputs on these and have 2 x CAT5e going to the office where the DVR will be located. Can I put one of these where near the car park is - plug baluns into the coaxial inputs and have 2 x CAT5e going to the office where the DVR is located. I want to power everything by CAT5e aswell so I would have a power box in each of these locations. At the DVR end, I will have 4 CAT5 cables which are carrying 4 video signals each. How do I plug these into the DVR? Do I need some type of 'receiver' or can I just strip the wire back and use the pair which the certain video signal is on. Thank you very much for your help. Jack

Video Transceiver + Wiring
jdowning replied to jdowning's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Thanks so much Soundy - I can't seem to find any of them video servers in the UK so I'll probably need to use a separate power box + transceiver. By the way - for housed cameras with a body inside them... can I power them by CAT5? How does the power work for these? Do I need 2 separate power cables? For example - this camera: http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/genie-body-cameras/genie-cctv-gsdnr-5358dv-daynight-camera-with-sdnr-.html With this housing: http://www.xenexsecurity.co.uk/product/id/177203 -
Thanks all for your replies! I can't really get CNB cameras though - heard a lot of good about them on the forum but from UK. Any other camera brands you'd recommend for little to no light? Thanks for the pics and samples btw. Jack

Hi all, I'm looking for an outdoor dome camera without IR. Some nights there is no light in the sky but we can be sure there'll be at least a bit of artificial light with sensor lights etc. Can anyone tell me what the best one is and why? [edit by mod-store links removed] Thanks all!

Video Transceiver + Wiring
jdowning replied to jdowning's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Thanks very much Soundy! Can I just go through one thing again? Sorry I'd have 2 x passive transceivers (very last product at http://www.henrys.co.uk/cctv/twistpaircomponents.htm). I'd have these 2 in different locations. I'd get each end of the individual CAT5 cable going to the cameras, put a video balun on them and plug them into the coaxial plugs of this transceiver. I'd do this for 8 of them on one transceiver. Then, after this has been done - I'd have 2 x RJ45 crimped CAT5 cables going back to the DVR. This would be the same for the other transceiver at the other side of the building. edit: a bit off topic - sorry... if i buy a housed camera & supply power to the camera, does this also provide power to the body camera? So then I'd have 4 CAT5e cables coming into the DVR room. Now the question is - how do I hook these cameras up to the DVR? Do I need a special 'receiver'? Do I need more baluns? Thanks for all your help! -
Could you do the same if possible? I am also looking for a DVR and came across this one Thanks very much!

Video Transceiver + Wiring
jdowning replied to jdowning's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
That is correct. Passive baluns work the same on both ends of the wire. Ok - that's great! And if I were to have a PTZ camera in my car park, because I can't bring everything back to the DVR, what can I do there? I want to be able to use PTZ+power+video. Thanks! Jack -

jdowning replied to jdowning's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
You've nailed it! Baluns are "tranceivers", which means they can both transmit and receive: you can use four of those same units above at the DVR end - you just need short coax "jumpers" to connect the baluns to the DVR... or use something like this: http://gemelec.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=243&category_id=41&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1 This is great! Thanks so much for your help. So you're saying I don't need a special receiver at the DVR end and I can just plug the individual CAT5 pairs into a balun and straight into a DVR? Thanks so much for your help -
Hi all, In nearly all of the professional environments I've been into - companies choose housed cameras with body cameras inside them instead of dome cameras. I'm just wondering - what is the primary reason for this? Can they zoom further on in? What is it like in low light levels etc at night time? I'm worried that if I install vandal dome cameras straight into the wall that they'll get tight after a few years and I won't be able to get the screw out (has happened me on a few occasions with other things). Which lux level would you recommend for very low lighted environments (and why shouldn't I use IR?). E.g; is this camera OK? http://www.onlinesecurityproducts.co.uk/informer-vandal-domes/informer-cctv-sony-600tvl-super-hadii-ccd-00003lux-28-12-mp-lens.html Thanks for all your help. Jack

Would a CAT5 cable usually be able to power a housing+body camera? Also - if I were to install a PTZ camera, could I have PTZ+power+video going down one CAT5? And if I had all PTZ control wires going back to a garage (but the DVR was in an office), could I have say a terminal which means I can run a wire from that terminal back to the DVR? sorry if i'm confusing thanks lots!

Thanks tom! Know where i can buy that? rory - know where I can get CNB in UK? i heard 'monolisa' chipsets are good.
