Automatic XP Updates for PC DVR good or bad?
libertysurveillance replied to Doug's topic in Computers/Networking
I'll say this, you're never 100% safe, so you basically must be as safe as possible, its like using a condom, there's always a chance it will break. Most of your servers should be behind a router, not to route, but it makes it that much more secure, and if you setup the router for remote access, and your customers have problems, you can just login. Shut all unnecessary ports/services down, you dont need most of that crap open that windows has open, one thing to do is go get a "gamers tweak guide" and disable whatever they say to disable, if a game doesnt need it, chances are your dvr doesnt need it. SHUT DOWN WINDOWS BUILT IN FIREWALL. - this will just create headaches! Use your router to filter all the other crap out, there should not be a direct connection to your DVR and the internet. Use port forwarding to create a tunnel to your DVR. From the outside, the only thing visible to the world and your dvr, should be the DVR's remote access port, and thats it. If its setup correctly you have a 98% chance nothing is going to happen. You can leave the updates on or off, if no one can connect to it, it doesnt really matter. -
what you guys do?

yea.. we dont talk about what we use .. lets just put it this way.. I'm no carpenter. I just made one out of wood one day, took 10 mins, holds 2 large coils, its great. what also works is a ladder and a pipe =p it might be cheaper and.. better result for you to run 2 cat5, with some baulns on em. They also got a cool "hub" for that type of setup. Not sure exactly what its called or who makes it. -
We got a call the other day from a governmental housing project. They want some cameras on a very large peice of land with lots of houses. I really have no clue on what to do here, i was thinking of just wifi'ing the whole area up with some nice outdoor AP's and having Geo's CMS linking multiple systems. Putting systems wherever i needed a camera. I got some pictures of the property from google, and local live. *use the tennis courts as a reference point* If you look at the first image, the CMS is going to be basically where the pool is in the center image. The first camera of the system (we are going to install more as time moves on, which is why i figured wifi would work cause we can layout the network and add systems as needed) is going to way up on the top left. That house up there is going to have a camera looking at the small building next to it, which is a bus stop. Anyone got any ideas as to if this would work, or maybe even a better setup?

Large campus like area, any ideas?
libertysurveillance replied to libertysurveillance's topic in System Design
protectvideo, trenching at this cost would put me out of the bidding, as i have to get it way under 10k per camera. I was thinking of calling a networking company and having them price up how much it would be, but then there goes most of the profit as well. Though letting go some of that profit vs having to battle a wireless network might be the way to go. I'm a run this by the big guy see what he says, thanks for your help everyone. -
Large campus like area, any ideas?

There is no broadband in these buildings they are low income housing. The cameras are going to go next to the entraces of the entire campus. for now. more will be added. As far as their budget ome company had told them 10k per building, and the look on her face when she said that was .. NO WAY. Its a government job, so we have to bid for it. so they wont say the budget. Do you think it would be possible to simply wifi the whole area up turning it into a large wireless network. then using Geovisions CMS software, add a dvr wherever we need cameras and network that to the wireless. -

Verifact A quality isses:upgrade question
libertysurveillance replied to LIAMG's topic in General Digital Discussion
I've used the VA's before with a geo system. They worked great, the audio synced well and had no problems. I could hear people in other rooms. We used the louroe amp they had to adjust the quality of the sound, as it was a bit overloud at first. It could be your dvr but did you ever try putting the mic higher, or further away from the speaking point. -
Anyone know any 411 on this Co.

I've dealt with Aventura before, the guy Ed Matulik there is a great sales guy.. but he's only just that. Their PTZ's are pretty good, but we had a problem getting them to work with their own h.264 pc based cards. Said to set dip to 1, didnt work couldnt get the damn thing to pan/zoom. So we tried on 2.. what ya know worked fine. Dunno if it was a typo, engineering bug for the hardware or the software. but all in all their cameras are average, the ptz's have a great picture, and great speed for the price. their pc based cards are ok, took up quite a bit of space even with the new h.264 standard. p.s. if you do call eddie, tell him Frank from liberty sent ya!
