  1. Oh brother...where to start. I have to admit, their tech support is top-notch. However, more than not, I get a "sorry...we dunno" answer. Each camera model, regardless of the firmware release, has its own personality...it's like having 4 different girlfriends and you'd better remember their names! This works with that, but that doesn't work with this. IE9, IE8, Chrome, Firefox...may/may not work. Oh, you have to roll-back to firmware x.xx if you want to use a newer browser, etc., etc. Edge storage? Forget it. Cards last a few months, then become unreadable. NAS storage? The moon & stars better be aligned if you want your recordings there when you need them. Motion detection? You'd better be an engineer to set it up so it's useful. If my clients only needed cameras for live viewing (e.g. surf cams, weather cams, etc.) Axis would be my choice. Recording/storage? Nope. I'm looking for something with Axis quality, but without all the Axis headaches & glitches. (e.g. I have one camera in a remote location, four hours away, that will not re-boot remotely. You have to DRIVE THERE and re-boot it at the POE injector). F-that.
  2. Thanks. I did check out some of the marine satellite providers and it isn't very fast (640k?), not to mention they charge by the MB/Minute!
  3. I have a client who wants to stream live video from his charter fishing boat. The only problem is the boat is typically out-of-range of cellular/wi-fi networks when offshore (30km+). Are there high-bandwidth satellite products (that aren't military grade & $$$)?
  4. Is anyone aware of a Channel Modulator that will work with Satellite installations? Client would like to watch the DVR on their TV, but they have satellite service...? I also have a few clients with digital cable, and the "old fashioned" analog modulators (e.g. NetMedia) do not work.
  5. That's a lot of work...in an attic...in FL...in June!

    Solar powered DVR

My car costs less! Would be interested in a demo login if you have. The demo's on Mobotix website are limited.
  7. Do you have a specific scenario in mind and a general idea of how the cabling is distributed through their house/bldg? Interfacing with Directv and their SWM wiring would be easiest as most any TV channel can be inserted onto the wiring. Client has a single dish which is distributed to appx. six TV's throughout the home via RG6. There are a few distribution blocks/amplifiers in the attic. I believe each TV has its' own "tuner box" (pardon my ignorance, but I'm not a satellite guy). Client wishes to view the cameras on two TV's within the home. I've looked at some set-ups from NetMedia involving modulators/splitters/combiners/filters, but they're not answering my e-mails. Their demo diagrams only show one TV, not multiple.

Do you have a link to routers that utilize "IP Sharing"? Very interested!

    Mobile DVR recommendations?

Looks like solid stuff, but...the lack of pricing info ANYWHERE leads me to believe = $$$$. I'm looking for something simple, yet well-manufactured (e.g. GeoVision). Geovision may be what I'll end up using, but was hoping to test competitors offerings.
  10. Seeking opinions on 2 ~ 4 ch. mobile DVRs or network video servers that records to USB or SDHC cards. I've had some success with the GeoVision Video Servers (e.g. GV-VS04H), but would like to hear about alternatives. I'm looking for a solid/reliable product to install in customer's fleet vehicles. Thanks in advance.

    Mobile DVR recommendations?

    Yes, I would mind.

An Axis IP cam with edge storage. Records to an SDHC card installed in the camera (up to 64gb). No DVR necessary.

    IR LED's vs. eye damage?

Just wondering out loud here...please see my other post re: baby monitoring for clarification: Can IR LED's damage eyesight? I installed a day/night camera with 18 IR's on the other side of the room (appx. 10') from the child's crib. Now I'm worrying that the kid can get eye damage from staring at the IR's all night. Not sure my liability insurance covers this... Yes/No???

Each DVR will have its' own internal IP address with its' own port. The ports would be open to the outside world. e.g. DVR1 = http://75.25.123.33:1020 DVR2 = http://75.25.123.33:1021
  15. I am working on a quote to install 3 Axis IP cams (M-Series?) cameras on a building. Only problem is...the entire building is glass. Not an inch of metal or any other material anywhere on the exterior to which you can attach a camera with traditional means. Just curious if anyone else has come across this situation or if the brain trust has any ideas...
  16. I haven't been on the roof yet. The air handlers are at ground-level. I'm sure anything metallic on the roof is bonded, but there isn't anything visible/metallic on the outer edge of the parapet that would require bonding. I don't want to get involved with adding lightning rods, bonding, etc. if I don't have to.
  17. That camera appears to be attached to a metal expansion joint between glass panels. The building I'm quoting has no such joints/gaps between the glass.
  18. Those look promising, but here in FLA they would be considered "lightning magnets". I want to avoid going above the top edge of the building with anything metal, if at all possible.
  19. I make the impossible possible...but thanks for your concern.
  20. I'm also considering mounting the cameras on a custom made arm mount from the inside of the parapet, but then I run the risk of attracting lightning (and making the building look like a prison).
  21. Nah, I won't be drilling the glass. Not even a consideration. I figure if I mount the cameras high enough on the building, I can go up/over the parapet with LiquiTite flex conduit. Issue still remains...how to mount cams. Epoxy is a good idea, but if using adhesives, I'd probably go with an industrial-strength two sided tape (e.g. trim tape). Insurance is @ $7mil. and I'm always the high bidder. If client mentions "cheap" or "inexpensive", I tell them I'm not the contractor they're looking for.
  22. My client is the owner and he wants cameras on the building. Building is 20 yrs. old, so I'm sure the architect is out playing golf and/or bingo by now. There are no competing bids.
  23. There are light poles, but they're on the perimeter of the property. I need to look outward from the building.
  24. It's tinted/mirrored. Cameras are to be mounted on the outside of the bldg.
  25. I have a very nice/expensive (for it's day) PTZ that I removed from a client's building. I believe it was manufactured by GE. The camera fires up, does it POS thing (with picture), then craps out. I'm assuming it's a power issue. I doubt GE still supports the camera. Is there anyone who repairs these units?
