whoa VST, you've got it all wrong. the government could never let the internet fail, how would they keep controlling our minds and reading our thoughts?

i've read great reviews on the Archos portable DVR (check out CNET). the AV700 comes with RCA adaptor cables, 7" screen, and stores 130 hours of video. think video playback is about 4 hours per charge. would love to have one for myself.

probably nothing to worry about - you can be sure a new free alternative will pop up as soon as others start charging.

hey rory - sounds like a headache! is the disc drive still working? if you're trying to get images off, and the file structure happens to be remain in tact, you can use a linux boot disc. we use these all the time for fraud investigations when we don't want to leave an imprint on the HD - it mounts only, no write access. the version we use is penguin sleuth (http://www.linux-forensics.com) - the entire OS runs from the disc and you'll at least be able to tell for sure if there's anything left on the drive. just a thought...

we're working on a complete redevelopment of our site, and as part of the new design, we're going to perform a review and re-write of our product categories and listings. so i'm curious, which specs are REALLY important when choosing a camera or dvr? if you were recommending to a newbie which specs to rely on, what would they be? i'm just not sure how much value is given to specs such as shutter speeds, sync systems, gamma characteristics, signal-noise ratios etc. i'm pretty certain the additional (and often unneccessary) detail both confuses and intimidates a lot of our customers. would love some feedback - thanks!

by the way, on a side - why can't you set up the site for sales? customs doesn't allow you to ship to US, or is it just cost prohibitive? with your background and experience, probably wouldn't be too difficult to find a partner state-side that can drop ship on your behalf for a small cut of the take???

thanks for the link, rory - especially liked your description paragraph on the Nubix. this is more along the lines of what we're trying to achieve in our descriptions, as we think customers and search engine spiders would prefer to read descriptions than a table of product features. thanks for sharing, and will definitely incorporate as many of the ideas as possible. especially software screenshots!

pretty interesting concept, kensplace - thanks for sharing. keep us posted if you can get it to work with a multiplexer - seems like a pretty decent alternative to a budget 1-ch dvr. max, you mentioned losing flexibility in frame rate - you mean if you wanted to reduce quality to save hdd space?

From what I understand, for black & white modules, 60Hz EIA is for the North American market and 50Hz CCIR is for most of the rest of the world. For color modules, NTSC is for the USA and PAL is for most of the rest of the world.

i've had dual setups at work and home for the past 2 years and can't imagine going back to single screen. kills me on the road with just my laptop monitor! recently got into a pretty heated debate with a co-worker about the dual setup. noticed he keeps his laptop monitor shut and just uses a larger flat screen beside it. couldn't figure out why, and when i asked him about it, he was very "anti-dual monitor" to the point of getting angry!! the next day he walked by and took a look at my setup. poor guy had only ever configured "clone screen" and couldn't understand what all the hype was about. of course, now he loves it - though he really only uses it to keep outlook up and winamp open.

to the best of my knowledge, web logs typically only record a user's IP address, not an associated MAC address? my brother worked at an ISP a while back - they would receive notification when a user was "abusing" access (i.e., hack attempts, spamming, fileshare servers, etc.) and could easily identify the user based on IP. my point is this has become increasingly more difficult to prove as a user can easily say "oh, that must be someone else using my wireless." kg6mti - couldn't agree more. can't imagine it to be too difficult for a waiter to do a data dump at a popular restaurant. what's even worse is when your CC# and expiration prints on the receipt. but in either case, i'm under the beautiful protection of citibank! personally, i would much rather deal with an issue of identity theft than to be mistaken for a pervert! besides, my major qualm with users accessing my wireless is the reduction in bandwidth!!

i've always wondered about this - using someone else's wireless is the same as spoofing an IP address, right? my mom, a school teacher, has a neighbor who's a registered sex offender and she refuses to let us set up her wireless because she has this fear that she'll receive a report from her ISP showing...uh, how can i put this...extreme acts with children. this must have some complications from a legal standpoint. with the proliferation of wireless, how do you prove who actually visited a site, ran a credit card, etc. from a personal perspective, i always set up the security - even if it is easily cracked. if there's 7 unsecured networks and one secured, why would the hacker even bother? kind of like the principle of locking your car doors, right?

Not to throw a wrench in your decision - but just so we're all clear, I don't believe the 1606A model is being discontinued as in no longer manufactured. We're planning to phase it out over the next few months as it doesn't have a CD burner or a built-in web server, and these have been the most requested features of late. Hope this helps to clarify! Rory, Isaac - couldn't agree more. Have only been a member for a few weeks now, but can't believe how much help the feedback is. There's just so much product out there and so little in the way of reviews. Very happy to have stumbled onto the site!
