    Oldie but a goodie!

Umbru, This one one is old school, can't control through the DVR, only with a separate controller. If anyone here has one they want to get rid of, let me know. They do still make these, you can even get these through Sears. Not sure why anyone would want to go this route if they were putting together a system from scratch with new product, it wouldn't be practical cost wise or from a technology standpoint. this unit as you see it cost over $600 new and you still have to buy the controller starting @ $250 plus a camera and lens that's compatible with the control system. ie: lens focus, zoom and iris control. Then there is the cabling from controller to the camera, it uses a 20 conductor cable plus 120 volt power to the pan tilt unit. Cheers, John

Actually, I found this one on eBay. If I see another one, I'll let you know. I was the only bidder so I got it cheap. I think people were a bit leery of it because it stated it was un-tested and sold as "parts or repair" I figured it was worth $25 even if it didn't work but, I was pleased that it does! John
  3. Even your 14MP DSLR will only do 1080p video (of those that do video). How fast can you shoot, continuously? My Canon 40D (using JPEG-Fine at full res) will do 6fps for a few seconds, but has to stop to clear the buffer after that. Fact is, getting steady video out requires a very different design philosophy than snapping a series of stills. It has to be optimized for various transport methods, efficiency of storage, constant streaming without buffering... think of how fast you'd fill up your SD card shooting 14MP images at 30fps (IF your camera could handle it). Hey Soundy, I understand that to some degree but, not completely. The Canon 40 D is a nice little camera, takes great photos. My dream camera is the 5D MkII. Soon as I come up with a few extra dollars! Before my house got broken into, I had a Pentax K-20d. it didn't shoot video but, I could set it up via my PC's USB port and watch live view all day long with no problems as long as I had battery power. Anyway, long story short, I need to win the lottery... Cheers,

Well, LJarrald. When you get to be my age and your eyes get as poor as mine... you'll understand. I'm sorry if I annoyed you but, perhaps you could explain why that is. I really don't understand. I can understand typing in all caps is a bit bothersome because that should be done only if you're trying to make a POINT or SHOUTING! when things are in bold they are harder (for me) to read, the characters seem more jumbled up and closer together Well... OK. Just for you, since you're such a cool kid, I'll quit using bold type.

    User interface...

Yeah, you'd think I'd learn not to try to skimp on technology. Its a no name 8ch DVR made in China. I wouldn't have anything against this software if it would actually work. one of the problems is after playing back prerecorded video for a while it just quits. plus, if I open the program called "view cams" it won't let me save my device after I set it up in "Device manager" once I close it out the next time I open it, I have to set it up all over again. That and I still can't get the email function to work. If you have any suggestions, I'm listening... Thanks, John
  6. Hey guys, Just need someone to clue me in on the best setting for my DVR. I'm supposed to be able to record in CIF, HD1 and D1. However, when I try to record in a higher resolution I have to cut back on the frame rate. In order to record in D1, I have to drop my frame rate down to 7 fps. I'm guessing the reason is because I bought a cheap DVR (live and learn) but, I'm wondering what is the best setting for me to use to get the best IQ when recording on my unit. do I gain anything by using D1 if I have to reduce my fps down to 7? Thanks, John
  7. I suppose my experience with DSLR cameras have messed up my thinking some, on the megapixel cameras. its hard for me to get my head wrapped around the fact a 1 or 2megpix cameras could put out a decent image when I used to using my 14.6mp camera. Also hard to understand why they cost as much as a lot of good DSLR's. However, from what I'm reading here, thay seem to be the way to go if you want any kind of IQ that would be of any value to you if you want to identify someone.

    D1 recording, frame rate question

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this stuff. I also think I'll be investing in some higher grade gear somewhere down the line that will give me the IQ I want. Thanks again, John

Thanks for you input, Sean and Rory. Yeah, Sean when I did a little research on it I found the retail price was over $600 for the set-up.

    Is it legal?

Not to hijack this thread, but to get license plates, you need at least 2 things: 1) A short exposure time/high shutter speed, on the order of 1/1000th of a second, and 2) Lots of light (follows naturally from 1) - especially at night A progressive-scan image sensor (as opposed to interlaced) helps tremendously. If you want to know more, search this forum for "license plate" and/or start a new discussion thread. Thanks for the reply, I sure appreciate it.

    Is it legal?

At the risk of showing my ignorance... I sure would like to know what set up you're using to capture plate numbers that are legible. All I can get is a blur. Thanks, John

Newbie needs a lot of help...

This is what's so strange. I have tried it on both my desk top and lap top with the same results. and stranger still, I cant access my user control panel on my laptop, only the desk top. I use Firefox as my main browser but, the DVR instructions say this software only works with IE as it is. there is a way to use it with FF or Chrome but the instructions are in translated Chinese and don't make any sense. I'm not sure what you mean by not using activex, isn't that the only way I can accsess my cameras when I'm away from home, like say at work? I called Verizon support and they would be happy to help me with a 30min tech call for a one time fee of $40 or a monthly fee of $10 for a minimum of 10 months. Gee, how's that for service?! I'm thinking I'm going to start looking for a good deal on another modem that isn't so screwed up it takes a 4 year degree to figure it out. anyway, I do appreciate your help. Not a lot of guys would take the time. Thank you, John

Just a note: Using the control panel software that came with the DVR,I did manage to log into my DVR. so I can see and control my cameras remotely from my computer. So, something is right, now I just got to figure out the port forwarding thingy. Thanks, John

Newbie needs a lot of help...

What version of explorer are you using? IE9 will probably give you issues. Most dvr's support IE8, but 9 much less so. You're dvr might have a firmware update to support IE9- you'd have to check to see. Or try Chrome. For a comprehensive step by step explainantion of port forwarding, watch the videos here under the advanced tab, specifically game consoles-ports, and IP cameras. Watch all you can handle there and you'll have a better understanding. Good luck. http://wifi-wiz.net/ Hey Shock, I'm using IE8 so I'm not sure what's going on. I'll take a look at the video you suggested and see if I can figure it out. Thanks, John

Newbie needs a lot of help...

I see the problem: the power switch is turned off! Anyway... you're trying to connect on port 8080... however, many routers use 8080 for their default remote-admin port, which could explain why you're kicking straight into the router's config page. You may need to either select another port for the DVR, or see if you can find a remote-admin setting and either disable it, or change its port. Hey Soundy, I Changed to port 8090 in the DVR and tried to connect. I get the message, that its trying to connect to xxx:8090 then after a few seconds it tells me its off line. sooo... I'm still scratching my head.
  19. Hey guys, I'm hoping somebody with a lot more than I have can shed some light on this for me. I purchased several motorized zoom lenses on eBay and I hope I can use them on my cameras. My problem is how to control them. 1. is a Fuji with a 9 pin D plug. 2. is a Fuji with a 10 pin round plug. 3. is a Rainbow with a 20 pin plug but with only 11 wires. Can anybody tell me how these are controlled or where I might find some info on them? Thanks, John

    Motorized Zoom lens

Thanks for the feedback guys, Being a photographer, I understand about the zooming and back focus and all that (at least to some extent) but I guess my main question is weather or not I can get ahold of a controller (lets forget the rainbow) for the fuji lenses. Or is there anyone here willing to post a schematic for building one? I'm not against trying that. Thanks again, John

Newbie needs a lot of help...

Hey Tom, Thanks for jumping in here. I'm starting to think I may have a software compatibility problem. I'm using Win7 pro 64 bit. and while the software installed OK, and acts like it wants to run, it won't let me install the active X plug-in I need. Here's what happens when I type in my DVR IP, A window pops up asking if I want to allow the program to install... bla, bla, bla. I click OK, and the pop up window closes and the screen I now have says, if your browser doesn't support the active x download, click here. If I click it, nothing happens. Just so you know, I have all active x privileges activated in my browser settings. Here is the other thing that's strange. if I try to connect through the software program that came with the DVR http://www.ipremoteview.com/ a window pops up like it should, for me to enter my product ID. when I do, it shows it trying to connect. "FORWARDING TO IP:96. [edited.for.your.safety] PORT 8080" then my router login page opens up asking for my login password. Really strange. Here are a couple shots I took of my DVR its a "no name" made in China. I think I've learned my lesson about buying imports, if you want service or tech support... BUY LOCAL! BTW I unpluged the LAN cable when I took the photos, I had it connected while trying to connect to my computer. No, really!

Newbie needs a lot of help...

dahomes, I managed to get the ports open that I need but, I still can't communicate between the DVR and computer. I'm still working on that side of the issue. it must be a firewall or something. On my router I can see the DVR is connected and it says its online but, I can't find it in my home network. Very frustrating, I'll let ya know if I figure it out. Thanks for all your help so far. I really appreciate it! John

Well.... I'm pulling my hair out here. Seems I can't get port 8000 or 9000 to open no matter what I do. I did get port 80 and 8080 to open but not the others. There has to be something I'm overlooking but I can't put my finger on it. anyone with any ideas is welcome to jump in! Thanks, John
